We are very lucky that we stumbled upon Level One on the internet when we were looking for a contractor to renovate our small condo in Coal Harbour. None of our friends or families had any recent home renovations done so we relied on our own search on the web. I was in town in September 2008 for a week, interviewed a couple on the 2nd day in town and decided on Level One. The owner came to the condo with an assistant for an assessment, listened to what we wanted to have done and offered a few suggestions. I was given a quote within just a couple of days. After agreeing to the contract, the demolition started the following week! Although it was a small one-bedroom condo, we had our kitchen torn out and replaced with new appliances and cabinetry, all the flooring replaced with bamboo flooring, the bedroom closet gutted and rebuilt, half of the bathroom redone. The project was completed in just 2 months. We are very happy with the process and the quality of the work. We were still living in California at the time of the renovation so all communications were done either by email or over the phone. We received email and photo updates weekly if not more frequently. We were sought approvals for any changes to the plans so we were aware of all changes to the costs all the time. When we walked into our condo a few months later when we moved here, it was exactly how it looked in the picture, even better because we could see it in person. There was a slight problem with the bathroom sink a month after we moved in in March 2009. It was a new product so it needed some tweaking. The owner came back numerous times to make sure it worked. Not only that we were not charged for the visits, he gave us a bottle of wine for the inconvenience caused. We had other renovation projects in the past and Level One is the most reliable contractor we dealt with so far. read more

Really impressed by the workmanship, communication, attention to detail and to top it off finishing on time! I got a detailed quote and there were no surprises. The whole project and it was a full gut on a two bedroom condo was seamless. I was thoroughly impressed with everyone; from owner, to site manager to ops manager. They were very accommodating and realistic when I wanted to change something. It impressed me how knowledgeable they were and how they did everything by the book. Would NOT recommend anyone to this company. Horrible "project manager" Alex. Seemed nice on the initial contact, but no communication after until prompted. He gave an overpriced quote after the designer came in to see the place but did not take any measurements. Then they gave us some rough sketches of the designs but all of the things were vague or incorrect (duh, they didn't even take measurements in the first place). There was no mention of what kind of materials would be used based on the quote, or labor, or anything. It was just a dollar amount. When asked further how they came to the outrageous number and ask to break down the quote based on each component of the project they simply ignored us and never wrote back. Incompetent and bad customer service. Stay away. UPDATE: Funny how you can give me a quote down to the cent but cannot give me a break down of the cost, and also say that none of the details have been confirmed (materials, drawers etc). The sketches were not helpful. First of all they were completely off, you guys didn't take into account of dead spaces and size of things. You guys didn't even take any measurements how could these drawings reflect the price or the quote You gave us? And down to the cent? What a joke. We emailed you guys but Alex never replied with the details of the cost. And let's get this straight, it was u guys who said u can give us a quote by 5 business days, and we didn't hear from you by end of the 5th day. We had to ask again and the reply was just a dollar amount. Poor business practices. We went with another company and got a very detailed quote within 3 days and with 3D renderings as well, for free! read more

We had a bunch of different contractors around to check out some projects. A few never got back to us with quotes because they felt our small home repairs weren't worth their time. Randy and crew at Level One however, not only gave us a great quote, they did great work. Here's one example: our new home had a really embarrassing feature-- you could hear the upstairs bathroom flushing in the kitchen as if you were in the bathroom itself! Turned out the previous owners had swapped around the toilet and shower so there was a bend in the pipe just above our fridge. Randy looked around in the initial walk through and guessed that was what was going on, and gave an estimate based on that but said we'd check when we opened up the wall. Fair enough. When we opened it up, that was what it was so the guys packed in the super sound proofing insulation. Kitchen saved! Another example: we thought we might have to rip off our whole deck since the railings are so wobbly and they're the supports, you know? Level One saved the day and we don't have to worry now about people leaning on the railing and falling down and breaking their legs. Deck saved! They're rock stars and really good about separating the quotes if you aren't sure how much you want to do until you see the $$$ breakdowns. Just let them know. read more

We completely renovated our 2 bedroom apartment downtown with Level One. We got a number of quotes before the project started but went with Level One due to their detailed breakdowns and openness about costs. We were assigned Eduardo as our project manager who helped us all the way through. He was always keeping us up to date on progress but never sugar coating any potential problems. He would always give a thorough walk through of progress, explain any unexpected costs (every project has them but LevelOne were fair and carefully explained what the extra costs would be as well as a few options). The on site team were always friendly and worked really well with our neighbours and the building strata to make sure everyone was happy and informed as to what was going on. Informative. Proactive. Professional. Respectful. These words really do describe our renovation experience with Eduardo, Randy, and the Level One Construction team. After years of patchwork, do-it-yourself fixes, our kitchen needed a complete overhaul from floor to ceiling. My wife designed a Scandinavian layout, leveraging the limited space usually reserved for a kitchen from the 1940s. The work was going to be extensive: removal of a support wall, modified plumbing to incorporate a dishwasher, electrical wiring brought up to code, refurbishing of a floor caked in layers of wood, laminate, and tile. (And that was only the start.) We went through the rounds of interviewing renovation contractors with mixed results. But it was Randy from Level One who really stood out for us. From the initial consultation, he took an active interest in hearing what we wanted from our new kitchen, offering suggestions on how we could make it happen within our planned budget. Nothing was out-of-the-question, and everything was possible. After deciding on Level One, Eduardo walked us through the project plan, outlining the cost breakdown and time estimates. Being one of the most conscientious people that I've ever met, Eduardo kept us informed about the renovations as they happened through email and by phone. Even when we were out of the country for three weeks, he'd send through images of all progress that was made. Our kitchen turned out exactly as planned, on time and on budget. The quality and craftsmanship are second-to-none, but more than anything, it's their Customer Service that shines through. A perfect example is an overheating issue we just had with our built-in oven. I called Eduardo to see what could be done. Within two days, he sends Dave over to install a vent flow from behind the oven and in the underlying toe-kick. Like everyone we've met at Level One, Dave was quite courteous, explaining what he was planning to do. He even vacuumed the kitchen after the work was completed. We'll definitely be using Level One again for future projects. They're one of the few companies that doesn't forget about its clients, even after the work has been done! read more

I got to speak with the owner immediately when I called, and after I explained my needs he was very clear that the job would require permits -- both of these facts impressed me. I booked a free onsite visit/quotation for four days later, took the day off work, and never heard from him. That didn't impress me. The initial call was impressive enough that I won't blacklist them, but I can't give them more than 3 stars. read more

We did not end up using Level One for our project. We wanted to work with them based on the other positive Yelp reviews. Over three weeks after we originally contacted Level One, we were advised that our project had become too small and we should find another company. During that time, we had to wait long periods for any response to communication, including receiving an initial estimate after the in-home visit/consultation. This is all very disappointing, because it delayed the work, which we could have pursued with another company. read more

It took over 6 weeks, and several phone calls from me to Level 1 to eventually be informed they couldn't take on the project. End result, zero benefit and several wasted hours. The service was inefficient and rude, phone calls not returned, and promised deadlines missed. I was looking for professionalism and found incompetency and bad service. Steer clear. Reading Level One's comments below leave me wondering. I have copies of an email correspondence with them 1st saying they could not provide an estimate....as below Later providing an estimate, again late, this time not mentioning an attic space. I called to get a quote for decking on behalf of a friend of mine who is a property manager, however, Victoria who picked up the phone and I am not convinced that she has front line communication skills. When you pick up the phone the first few seconds are the most important. How you pick up the phone, greet the customer, introduce by name and energy are very important. If this fails it paints the picture of the rest of the company. I had to ask for her name as I like to connect on the customer service side and she seemed a little annoyed. Maybe she was just coming in through the door when I called at 8:41 am and hadn't settled in yet, however, I've been in that situation before and still managed a professional initial contact greeting. With that said I left a message for someone to give us a quote. I never heard back from anyone but I wanted a quote, therefore, I left another message with Alex on his machine. Probably one too many times to have someone get back to me. Because this is a communication based review as this means a lot to me. I am giving some credit to Victoria the receptionist who was professional and polite, however, taking points away 'cause after two attempts Alex felt that he didn't want to get back to us. read more

Level One crew are THE BEST! In 2009 I interviewed 10 contractors as my new apartment needed an upgrade/overhaul. Level One and Randy won my trust hands down! They did a great job and provided guidance with decorating as well as construction options. I have since had occasion to call Randy and Level One for an assortment jobs and they have always been there for me. Big or small jobs, they are always prompt in responding as well as providing excellent service. We really lucked out when we chose Level One to do the bathroom/kitchen renovation in our 25 year old condo. They were very clean and professional from start to finish and very importantly followed the condo rules and regulations to the letter obtaining all the necessary city permits and bringing in city inspectors. Hans, our project manager, was always available to answer any of our questions and concerns and he went the extra mile by personally fixing a couple of broken kitchen drawers that were not part of the project.
