I searched for an apartment with David Brumley. Although I ended up finding a place on my own, we exchanged several e-mails and phone calls that left me with a favorable impression. I told David exactly what I was looking for (location, square footage, etc), and he sent me frequent e-mail updates with detailed listings of apartments. These often included floor plans and pictures, and he visited the apartments before speaking with me in order to figure out whether the apartments met my criteria. read more

I found a place on Street Easy and was emailed by Rachel asking me to call her to schedule a showing. I called her, she got some basic info and we set up a time for the following day. I realized, after I'd been standing in front of a building for over 10 minutes, and she texted "Here" that I was on St. Mark's Ave, and the apartment is on St. Mark's Place. Apparently, once you cross 5th Avenue, St. Mark's Ave becomes St. Mark's Place. I didn't know that and I've lived nearby for over 6 years. When I called to ask her what the cross streets were so I knew exactly where to go, she was rude and said just to walk to 5th Ave. and look for St. Mark's Place. I asked her 3x, "But does St. Mark's Avenue turn into St. Mark's Place?" and she just said to "walk to 5th Avenue and look for St. Mark's Place because it's the only one." Actually it's not, because on one side of 5th Ave is St. Mark's Ave and on the other side is St. Mark's Place. It's the little things that make someone good at sales. Like, for instance, giving me a heads up about the area and the fact that the street I'm supposed to be going to is called something almost identical when you cross a certain block (assuming you know which if you're selling an apartment to someone, you should know the area inside and out). But whatever, fine. I can deal with that because at the end of the day it was my fault. Before I even got to see the apartment, I was told I had to sign a "registration form." As I was writing my name, I saw "15%" and read the small print that said that if you rent an apartment with them, your brokers fee will be 15% of the yearly rent. Ummm...what? I was looking at a $1,900 apartment, and the broker's fee would have been $3,500? That should have been made clear when she spoke to me the first time, because I would have never wasted her time or my time. In my 14 years of renting apartments, I have never had to pay more than one month's rent. Brokers in NYC are rude, don't seem to know anything except how much their broker's fee is and ignore the fact that we are people who are doing our best to find somewhere to LIVE. Treat us with respect. I get they are busy, but guess what? I'm busy too and I have to rush all around town to see places, just like you. I found the apartment, I sent a message, I called her to set it up. Why should I pay anything, let alone 15% of the yearly rent. Crazy. read more

I never write reviews, but had to write one for Kirt. Kirt was fantastic to work with, from start to finish. My partner and I were looking for an apartment and had experienced quite a few brokers who were either unhelpful, awkward regarding our same-sex relationship, or just too busy to listen to what we wanted/needed in a place. Kirt was the exact opposite. We originally were not interested in paying a broker's fee, but Kirt's fee was reasonable and we felt good about paying it because he earned it by relieving so much of the stress and anxiety that comes with renting apartments in NYC. Not only did he work with us (we don't have stellar credit), he went to bat for us to get the apartment we wanted. All the while, he was extremely friendly and calm - which really helped our stressful apartment search. Kirt was a consummate professional and so easy to work with. He was communicative, flexible and made everything easy. We will be recommending the Level Group (and especially Kirt) to anyone who needs an apartment!! read more

Stay away from these people -- my boyfriend rented a unit represented by a broker from this group (Robert). The building was riddled with issues and resulted in a case in housing court. Despite Robert knowing about the issues, he still continues to represent the property, even after more tenants have since taken this particular landlord to housing court. Didn't offer any of the broker fee back or do anything to resolve the situation. read more

I can't speak to the quality of service of Level Group as a whole, but I must say that I'm extremely happy with the experience I had with Nestor Encarnacion, a Level One broker. He was one of five brokers (all from different companies) with whom I viewed apartments during May and June. Nestor was prompt, friendly, conscientious and had keys to the buildings so that we didn't have to stand around waiting for supers to show up. Aside from this he showed me the best apartments of any of the brokers I'd seen-- apartments that actually looked close to what I wanted! This is why even though I didn't find an apartment with him the first day, I phoned him back and went to look at some other apartments. I am now living like a queen in an apartment that has hardwood floors, a big bedroom (one of my main and most difficult requirements) and a good view on the fifth floor with lots of light. In addition, I have a huge kitchen with a dishwasher and the building has an elevator and a laundry room, features that exceed my initial expectations. All this while remaining within my budget, which is actually miraculous as my budget was not extravagant. I definitely would recommend Nestor to anyone looking for an place to live in Inwood. He knows and enjoys what he's doing and this made finding an apartment easy and pleasant. read more

This review pertains exclusively to the Level Group's, Valentina Veleva. As a young professional moving to NYC for the first time, I had very little prior exposure to the city's real estate market and the unique process through which apartments are procured. Nevertheless, Valentina was great about acclimating my roommate and I to the neighborhoods and potential buildings. We visited a number of prospective units in various buildings, where she appeared to have a strong rapport with the building's in house relators. Furthermore, she was very knowledgable and well versed about each unit and building we visited. However, most importantly, Valentina was very honest with me and was openly willing to give an experienced opinion. Having worked with similar brokers, these qualities were very rare amongst them and working with Valentina was truly a breath of fresh air in a very stressful hunt for a first apartment. I would recommend her to anyone searching for a rental property in NYC and have already done so to a number of my friends moving to the city for their first time as well. read more

If I can give Level group less than one star, I will. Please do some research ahead yourself on rules and regulations of different real estate groups, beofre u r dealing with this real estate group. Be very careful when u r dealing with this company. I met with their agent named Syreeta Love, and here how the incidents went, which made me question this company's honesty & intergrity. 1st incident: She asked for $75 cash for background/credit check, while her company's forms clearly stated $50 fees. While I pointed that out to her, she responded that those were old forms with old fees. But at the same time, she wanted me to use those very old forms to fill out my info. I quietly filled out her 'old forms' as she said and paid $75 fees, and all the necessary documents. ($75 fee is over the average rate, usual fees range between $30 to $50 if u do research) 2nd: I asked her; "Will I get a copy of my credit report?" She answered; "No." And told me her company do not give out credit reports to the clients. So I asked her: "Can I at least know my own credit scores?" She said after she ran my background/credit check, she will email to me. (After paying all those overpriced fees, you don't even get to see your own report, while the strangers can see them? There are real estates groups who will give u a copy of your credit report right away, but I'm not going to mention their names here since I don't want to look like I'm advertising for them). 3rd: She told me she will respond to me on such and such date, for example Monday, whether I get approved or not for the property. I waited till Wednesday, to give her more time. Still No respond. (Not even a note that I was denied). So I emailed to her about asking the updates. Then she finally replied, I wasn't approved. (I was kind of surprised because I earned 6 figures income, & the last time I checked 6 months ago my credit was over 800 scores, I know myself I have squeaky clean background, and zero debts. And this property wasn't expensive for me at all). THE BEST PART: So I told her; "By the way I still haven't receved my credit scores yet. Since U already ran my credit, can u tell me what's my credit scores?" Then she replied, "Oh I'm sorry, I never had a chance to run your credit report/background check." That was when my frustration level went up. How the hell she even knew I was denied when my credit/background check wasn't even checked. Then I told her to immediately return the $75 fees back, along with all my documents. She sensed the anger in my tone, she finally returned the fees. $75 is nothing for me. What bothered me the most was asking for fees in shady way, and asking for service fees that you act like you are going to give the service, but at the back you don't even carry out one single damn service at all. If u can't carry out the service, just be honest up front. If i haven't been curious about my latest credit scores, i would have never known that they never submitted my documents. Imagine out of how many clients this level group making the shaday $$ like that. U can do your math, if 20 clients applied for one apartment, that's $75x20= $1,500 in one day. Then they can just run the credit check of the best possible only 5 clients instead of all 20, and choosing the best possbile clients is not hard, u can just look at the W2 and latest paystubs. Then the rest of the 15 clients' fees go into their own pockets. The level group can just told them that they weren't approved. At the same time, the apartment can still be open to view, more and more people will come and take a look at the place and apply, and then more and more fees can be collected at the same time, while they already chose the tenant and they already knew who will be the tenant. After explaining exactly what i was looking for, she showed me an apt that was nothing close to what I explained. She stated her annoyance with me, acted very discontented and blamed me for not being more descriptive. Her attitude really was appalling. read more

Avoid at all costs! I hired one of their licensed agents to assist in having the remainder of my lease taken over. The agent had access to my apartment for 4 months for alleged 'showings' with no interest. I stopped by a week ago and was unpleasantly surprised to find myself being locked out of my own apartment by the agent herself. When I was allowed access into my apartment, there was a man being 'hidden' in the bathroom - the agent proceeded to indulge in frivolous small talk to attempt to distract from the matter at hand, shut the lights off, and locked the man in my apartment with no explanation at all. I contacted Level Group about this and was told that the agent had a man 'shadowing' her that day (acknowledging indeed that a man was in my apartment), but no explanation as to why I was locked out of my own apartment and why he was left in there unattended. My apartment search was fine. The Broker was friendly and reasonable. I paid a $200 fee above the security deposit and broker fee to hold the apartment. The Broker and my receipt clearly stated that fee was supposed to be applied to my first month's rent. It was not and I have not been able to get a refund of my money. Even though my experience was not completely negative, it's hard to recommend a business that jips its customers. Unless you have a personal referral, stay away. read more

Literally the worst experience I have ever had. I would rather sleep at the subway station than have to go through the frustration of working with this company. They delayed the signing of contracts for over a week and 2 days before I was about to move in they told me they were not able to get in touch with the buildings management. Basically I was without apartment, and had 2 days to find something thanks to this joke of a company. Instead of just being upfront with me from the beginning they kept telling me we are signing tomorrow and then the next day and the next day. They are extremely unreliable and and unprofessional. I wish we could give them negative stars. I don't even know why they are still in business. Whatever you do, stay away from Level Group. read more

I have moved back from Brazil and was in a unhappy situation in the apartment that I was living. When I called Nesto Encarnacion and told him what I was looking for he set up an appointment right away to show me the appointment. He showed up on time and looked and spoke very professional. He showed me the apartment and explained to me that there were other apartments in the building but they were an extra 100 dollars. It was not necessary because I found the apartment that I wanted. He walked me through the application process and even picked me up and took me in his own car to the signing. Even after the signing was complete I had a little bit of a personal/finanical issue and Nesto was right there trying to help me out. Not only that he was very reasonable with he brokers fee and worked with me so that I could pay it off. I could not ask for better customer service and would recommend him to anyone that is moving. If I decide to move again he would be the only broker that I would need to call. read more

Carla actually listened to what I said, found apartments that fit what my husband and I said we wanted, and adjusted beautifully when, with her help, we refined exactly what we were looking for. Instead of applying pressure to close a deal, she held me back when I considered settling and encouraged me NOT to dial up my price range when I got frustrated with what was available. When I went to look at apartments with her, or with her colleague when she was out of town, everything worked liked clockwork. Working with Carla was a pleasure. I'm hoping to be in my current apartment for a long time, but when it's time to move again, she'll be my first call. read more

She listened to every detail and within 24hrs I arrived in NY from Ohio and met with her partner LJ whom was equally amazing! Every apartment I was shown was based upon the characteristics and preferences we spoke about. No time was wasted and I appreciated all the additional information about the neighborhood LJ provided including restaurants and transportation. If you are looking for someone who is honest and about their word please don't give yourself a headache by trying to pursue this yourself. I highly recommend working with Janice Tsao from Level Group. She is respectful, responsible, patient, considerate and sensitive to your needs. She is also honest - you can trust her. She is definitely not shady or pushy. I met Janice in 2008 when I was looking for an apartment. A friend recommended her to me, but I was working with a broker and didn't think it was fair to work with two brokers. But since I wasn't getting anywhere, I decided to meet Janice. She helped me find my new home. She understands that an apartment is a home. She gets to know what qualities are most important to you and tries to find apartments with those qualities. The search process is unpleasant and stressful, but believe me, Janice helps to make the experience more pleasant. The reason why she became a broker is because of her bad experiences with brokers. She decided that she didn't want anyone to go through what she went through. If that's not reason enough to work with her, I don't know what is. She knew what I was looking for and despite it being in a location not on my target list, she encouraged me to check out an apartment one evening. I said that I didn't want to live so far north (Yorkville), but that I'd check it out. I met Janice that night and fell in love with the apartment. She knew how much I would like the apartment. Other brokers would probably have overlooked this apartment because I wasn't interested in the location, but Janice had the sensitivity to suggest it. Janice met me the next day to sign the lease. She helped me with the paperwork and wrote a list of items the leasing agent said I would need to finalize the lease process. She wrote everything out for me. She really is a great resource. Since then, I have recommended only her to friends and colleagues. Janice goes above and beyond to help those looking for apartments. I am still living in the apartment she found for me in 2008, but thought to look for other options this year, since my lease (of course) went up. She found a wonderful apartment for me. She urged me to fill out and email an application right away if I wanted it. I did that, but because I don't have a scanner and since the leasing office was closed after 6:00pm, she picked up and scanned my application and emailed it right away so that I would have first priority. I was the first one to be called, but I was torn between leaving my home and paying the rent increase. In the meantime, I spoke at length with Janice about being conflicted and she listened, and didn't push me in any direction. In the end, I decided not to move. I never felt pushed or obligated to make a certain decision with Janice. Please reach out to Janice if you need help finding a home. She rocks! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Here's what happened to me: I relocated back to New York after living in Asia for two years. I spent a few months staying with family & friends until I landed a great new job. So now I was ready to find a great new apartment. I saw a listing for a 1br apartment in Brownsville for $1175. The photos looked decent, so I contacted the broker showing it (Kashayia Griffin) and made an appointment to meet on a Monday. She was about 30 minutes late. It was the first nice day (thank goodness!) so I didn't freeze while I walked around the neighborhood to check it out. The apartment did actually look like it did in the photos, and Kashayia told me that heat, hot water, and cooking gas were all included in the rent. I would need 1st, last, & security to move in (total 3 months of rent) I decided that night that I didn't want to miss out and started to e-mail her some of the necessary documents for the application. I met with her the next day (Tuesday) and gave her a money order for $60 for the application fee to IBEC Building Corporation, and I also gave her a cashier's check for $1175 made over to Level Group to cover the deposit so they would stop showing/advertising it. After 48 hours, I still hadn't heard back from her (and she knew that I was trying to move in the coming weekend before I started full-time hours at my new job). When she finally responded to my texts, she claimed it took 3-5 business days to process the application, but in my experience, a standard credit check only takes 24-48 hours. I became very suspicious. When I looked online, I found that another broker was listing the same apartment for $50 more. I texted Kashayia to inform her of what I'd found asking why this other broker was offering the same apartment when I'd already put down a deposit. I also looked on the building management's website & saw the apartment listed for $1225 with NO FEE and only 1st month & security to move in! I contacted the management company (IBEC) asking about the broker I'd used and my application, but didn't get an immediate reply. The next day (Friday) I got a text from Kashayia saying that my application was denied and that I would have to meet up with her to get my deposit money back (which I was thankfully able to do that evening). The next day (Saturday), I got a response from IBEC saying that my application fee had been mailed back to the address on my application. Wait, WHAT? I'm not mad that I got that $60 back, but application fees are non-refundable. They are the fee for processing the application and running credit & background check. If my money was returned, it can only be because my application was never processed in the first place! And the only reason I could see for a management company NOT to process an application for rental would be, in this case, because the broker was listing the unit for less than what the management company had agreed to. An entire week of my apartment hunt wasted because of Kashayia Griffin from Level Group. I have since seen the apartment listed for $1225 on nakedapartments by other brokers at another firm. I contacted one and they are charging a fee for what the building management calls a NO FEE apartment. As far as I can tell, a LOT of the apartment/real estate game in New York is a total scam. Since I've already seen the apartment, I've decided to just put together my own application package & documents and use IBEC's application downloaded from their website and I sent it out in overnight mail with a money order to cover the application fee. We'll see what happens next, but at least I'm not dealing with another shady broker or getting charged fees and hidden costs that the actual building management doesn't even endorse. Bottom line: Avoid Level Group and avoid Kashayia Griffin. read more

If I could give no stars... For a while I thought my broker was decent. He LinkedIn with me and offered when I rented if I had any problems or had any questions in the future, he would be happy to help me out. He even followed me on Instagram. It seemed like an endearing connection with a good person. I referred him to many people and silly me. Not only did he ignore my request for some assistance at a very frustrating time with my landlord when I could use some advice but then found he removed himself from my LinkedIn. I don't need to be connected with a broker unless I want to buy a house in the future (and I'd never use this company), but what an insult to have been withdrawn for the only reason I would need to be connected professionally with a broker. I agree with many other posters below. Expect less than par brokers here. Unfeeling and seeking merely the all mighty dollar. I'm incredible disgusted. read more

i liked the apartment i found through them... too bad they were the ones who showed it to me. the level group is a shining example of sketchy unprofessionalism. the no fee apartment wasn't in the end. they requested a skeevy $500 "good faith" deposit just to apply, and the no fee apartment wasn't quite no fee. i've dealt with sketchy brokers before, but these people are in a whole other class. read more

This review is specifically for the wonderful Ben Getman. Back in August of 2013, we emailed Ben about one of his listings. He promptly responded and showed us the apartment. At the time, my husband and I were just beginning to look and we were not ready to purchase. Ben understood this and said, "No matter how long it takes, whenever you're ready, I'll be there for you." He really meant that! We worked together for a full year before we found our new apartment and he stayed loyal to us the whole time. While most realtors won't waste their time on a buyer who isn't ready, Ben would meet us on a whim just to show us places. He felt it was important to keep looking and get a feel for neighborhoods and specific buildings, so when the time came to buy, we'd be informed and prepared. He was so patient and excited each time he showed us a place, but when it fell short of our hopes, he clearly saw it didn't match up and he honestly agreed it wasn't for us. He never tried to push us to buy. This really reassured us that he was looking out for our best interests, not just trying to make a sale. We loved how he was able to share in our excitement as well as be a support when it didn't seem like we'd ever find a place. We knew we could count on him and he promised us that our new home would come along when the time was right. He was also extremely organized. He kept track of all the buildings and properties that we liked and sent us emails with new listings that matched our desires. He really listened to our needs and wishes and never pressured us. It was evident in every interaction between us that he cared about us. The fact that he stayed with us for a year, showing us property after property, is a testament to his honesty, devotion and sincere interest in our happiness. We have never met a broker so dedicated to his work. He was available at all hours, even through the night. We often found ourselves up late browsing through listings and we'd shoot him an email at 2 AM expecting to hear from him the next day. To our surprise, we'd get a response back immediately. His service is just unmatched. On top of it, he happens to be a really nice guy who is so easy to work with. He's professional and protective, too. When things got stressful, he took the burden off us and managed everything. We obviously can't say enough about Ben and the support he provided us leading up to our purchase and through the closing.
