The character of Charlie Bucket in Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is not the only one who jumps with glee at the thought of touring a chocolate factory. Let's be honest: most people, of any age, would savor the chance to see how chocolate is made, breathe in the sweet scent of warm brown liquid chocolate and sample some of the delectable treats. Did you know that this fantasy is a reality here in our very own Los Angeles? That's right! We have a chocolate factory AND you can tour the facilities! LetterPress Chocolate is the baby of husband and wife team Cory and David. Cory and David had a passion for chocolate but also for graphic design (David) and the environment (Cory). The ingredients (pun!) were in place to get into the chocolate business and infuse it with individual niche skills and thus; LetterPress Chocolate was born in their APARTMENT where the lovely scent of chocolate delighted their neighbors but their landlord? Not so much and therefore they moved to a retail storefront.  For the record, LetterPress Chocolate is a chocolate maker where they actually make chocolate versus a place like See's who is a chocolatier where they re-melt chocolate and add mix-ins to make bon bons, truffles, etc. This factory and retail space can be accessed on Roberston near Mid City and Culver City in an unsuspecting strip plaza where one would think it is an actual printing press behind the brick walls versus a chocolate heaven (parking is available in front with street meters). LetterPress of course sells their chocolate bars in the storefront but also offers tours (online booking, $20/person) and this is where the fun begins! There is so much to do in LA; but touring a chocolate factory is certainly a unique and extra-special treasure that you didn't even know existed! We were welcomed by the official tour guide Wesla (LetterPress is a three-person business! How impressive is that?!) and were lucky enough to have no other patrons booked for our tour slot so we instantly felt VIP. We were given masks and hairnets (tip: this is a fragrance-free tour so no perfume, ladies! Wear closed toe shoes, no stilettos, no fur, etc; and bring a jacket as it is chilly in the cooking area).  The tour consists of three parts: 1) an i-Pad slide show describing the business and chocolate/cacao itself 2) tour of the facilities 3) chocolate sampling flight The first part of the tour may sound like school work to you but it is absolutely fascinating and Wesla is a great teacher. There is SO much to learn - and you actually retain it! - about cacao, chocolate beans, trees, pollinating trees (midge flys do the work! Look them up!), the farmers and countries involved, the cost of wholesale purchasing and shipping (you will never want to eat Hershey's again!) and so much more. Additionally, you will learn about LetterPress as a business, their fair trade and environmental initiatives, their actual chocolate and even about their labeling/marketing! It's all very enlightening and extraordinary! After the brain has grown some wrinkles from chocolate education; it is time for the tour. Granted the tour is small/short and more like a kitchen area than Willy Wonka's air hangar-sized compound but it is still super fun to see the process in action and what goes into making chocolate and chocolate bars. Finally, you return to the storefront and it is time for a tasting flight of chocolate! LetterPress sells dark, milk and white chocolate (although white is technically not chocolate) and even ice cream; but the tasting on my tour consisted of 8 dark chocolate samples. Similar to wine or coffee beans; the country of origin of the chocolate pods gives the beans different flavors, notes, etc. My samples hailed from Costa Rica, Tanzania, Ecuador, Venezuela, Sao Tome, Peru and Jamaica with flavor notes ranging from peppery, nutty, floral, fruity, mocha, caramel, berries, spicy, fudgy, peanut butter-y and even banana! Once you complete your flight, you can also ask for any of the samples behind the counter! Everything I sampled was heavenly! The entire experience is absolutely amazing and can be compared to a winery tour and wine tasting but with chocolate! This is an absolute hidden gem and activity suggested for all making a perfect date, supplement to other activities or just a learning experience. Even if they didn't offer tours; I would tell you to RUN to LetterPress and buy some chocolate not only because they are DELICIOUS but because this is a local business (selling worldwide!) that truly cares about doing good for the planet and people and they deserve support. Cory, David and Wesela are absolute gems. I cannot rave enough about LetterPress! Go check it out for yourself! Even if there are no oompa loompas...

HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend going on the tour if you're a big fan of the dark chocolate process. Their tour lasts for about an hour, especially if you're enthusiastic to learn about the supplies, shipping, making, storage, and product packaging. It's a small business so the front of the store is dedicated to selling merchandise and the back kitchen is where the tour is held. Forewarning, it's not going to be big like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but you will appreciate the amount of effort and time it takes to get high-quality chocolate. At the end, you'll have a speed round to taste test all the different chocolate. Parking TIP: There are parking meters on the side streets, and the rates are 25 cents/15 mins so I would recommend bringing coins or your physical card. Products: Ice cream- Their ice creams are the best! Very rich and with depth of flavor. Certain flavors won't always be available on the menu. Tanzania Dark Chocolate Ice Cream leaves off a rich creamy dark chocolate flavor. Reminds me of the Dark Chocolate Gelato from Patrizia Gelato Shop in LA. Vanilla Earl Tea has whole vanilla beans and a light tea scent. So unique, I've never seen this flavor produced exceptionally well. Chocolate Bars- Three words: Smooth Like Butter. Holy, it just melts in your mouth and I think it has something to do with their extensive process or their tempering machine. I was skeptical about paying $10-$15 for a bar of chocolate, but it is worth it for its quality. I would say it's about the same level or better than European chocolate.

Lots of Chocolate Selections for you to choose and try after the tour

Great place to hang out for a couple date. I was searching for couple date ideas, LetterPress was highliy recommend in the article. Turns out lots of surprise. Nice and small group tours and answer all your questions. You get to try all different kinds of dark chocolates, and you for sure will find the one you like. Usually I am a milk chocolate person, but after the tour I might start to change my taste buds and look for more quality chocolates.

We just finished our tour of LetterPress Chocolate and really enjoyed it! We walked out much more knowledgeable on chocolate-making and fans of this amazing local business that works with cocoa farmers around the world in a very responsible manner. The tour is an hour long and includes a tasting which, of course, we were thrilled about! I will definitely look to LetterPress next time I'm search of a gift or a chocolate fix.

$20 for a 45 min - 1 hour tour with 15+ samples is well worth it! Such a hidden gem. Loved learning about the owners, how to make chocolate, and big chocolate vs bean to bar chocolate. My group (that were 3 couples all strangers plus me) ended up being very COVID safe. Luckily. We all wore masks and hairnets until the very end portion and 3 of us wore our masks even during the tasting and would slip the chocolate under our mask. I enjoyed trying 100% cacao chocolate, mint chocolate, and chili spicy chocolate on top of the 12+ they included. You are allowed to ask for any and all samples. Their items and the tour would make a great gift.

Letterpress chocolate is a small unassuming store and factory, but don't let the outside appearance fool you! The staff inside is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and you can tell they have an absolute passion for their product and their process. We took the factory tour (110% recommend) and were guided through the whole bean to bar process, including a factory tour and guided tasting. Incredible tasting experience, and illuminating to taste all the different varieties side by side and learn more about the backstory behind all the bars. After the tour, we sampled their chocolates, and bought a few of our favorites to take home. Also highly recommend getting their hot chocolate. It's akin to drinking from a chocolate fountain, with the thick texture. But the taste was unmatched, and it'll be hard returning to any other hot chocolate. A must visit for any chocolate fans, definitely a highlight of my trip to LA! 10/10

great tour that was a fantastic value. They seem very committed to high quality and are willing to share information about the craft freely.

Really enjoyed the chocolate making tour at LetterPress. Our docent was excellent at sharing the secrets of making good chocolate and the time and care it takes. Made for a great Sunday afternoon.

The backside of the packaging of my favorites, with ingredients and info about the farms and farmers, etc.

LetterPress Chocolate is one of the perks of working in that area. It's a cool little shop with interesting decorations. It's run by kind people with passion for chocolate. They have samples you can try, but it's hard to get the full flavor from the small samples. Trust--the bars are worth it for a chocolate lover. My wife and I love a square or two after dinner. My wife had the greater interest in chocolate before I found this shop. She can always tells the quality difference between this and any other chocolates. We did a taste test to prove it. We think that many other chocolates are tasty due a little too much to the sugar content, whereas these rely on the natural flavors of the beans, and how LetterPress has been able to roast and extract those flavors. The bars are not inexpensive, but they also don't contain the ingredients that cheapen (and also make cheaper) the average store-bought chocolate. LetterPress dark chocolates contains only cacao beans, unrefined cane sugar, and cocoa butter. As seen in the attached pictures. The white chocolate and flavored chocolates, and chocolates of different percentages of cacao obviously have different ingredients or proportions...but the point is that there's no junk. Only quality. They sell homemade ice cream that is excellent. The TanzaniaDark Chocolate is one of the best chocolate ice creams you'll have. The other flavors are great too. They also sell tasty hot chocolate on some days of the week. There is also a tour you can take to learn more about their process and story. It's a pretty good tour and you get to taste samples at the end. Highly recommended.

Another business that came up on my social media during National Ice Cream Day, where the words "Ghana Caramel Crunch" caught my attention which let me to their Instagram page, filled with beautiful pictures of the ice cream, their products and interior. I knew I had to come in. They have limited hours so make sure you keep an eye on their schedule. The shop is located south of Beverly Hills on Robertson. First of all, let me just say that it is beautiful from the gold foil lettering in the windows, to their letterpress block letters on the wall and the various chocolate-themed art and pictures on the wall. Their bars are beautifully-wrapped, advertising where the cacao beans originated from. The associate behind the counter was very friendly and knowledgeable of their products. It's wonderful to know that the beans are bought in fair trade and brought to their shop for processing. They do offer tours in their little factory for $10 a person, something I would love to take one day. I have seen the chocolates all around town in different specialty shops and coffee houses. As a localvore, someone who loves to support local businesses, I am adding Letterpress Chocolates as another item on my "to give" gifts. I love sending out gifts to friends and family items that are uniquely LA. The cacao juice surprisingly does not taste like chocolate. It is from their fruit and it is unique, something I have never tasted before. It's akin to mango and apple juice but again, I can't pinpoint it. You definitely need to try it. The ice cream was rich and thick and oh so delicious! I had it yesterday and I am STILL thinking about that cup of ice cream.

Chris did an amazing tour that was worth more than the cost of the tour in my opinion. It was extremely informative and the geek in me loved hearing about the process from fruit to bar. It was lovely and we even got to try the cacao before anything was added to the machine that (I forget its name and verbage) makes magic of liquefying the bean. We lucked out that day and it was beautiful. Tried the addictive cacao juice and samples of stuff that I don't want to ruin for you. It's much too cool for that. Let's just say that this was incredible to truly note the differences between each of the varieties on my pallet. I felt like a boss! Lol A company with passion and a real love for what they do!

Apparently, it can be so rich and thick (European Style) that it is part healing warmth and the other part just wildly delicious. So I decided to go ahead and find a cup of thick, and rich cocoa to hit me with holiday splendor, the kind that can re-assemble Frosty after his final melt. My friend Conrad and I were the duo who ventured to ChocoVivo to try chocolate, on chocolate, on chocolate, with some water on the side. ChocoVivo is in Culver City. The place itself is on Washington Blvd amidst some bars, and eateries. This place lends itself to be a dessert spot, an experience for chocolate lovers and those who are not, and anyone who just wants to experience the taste of chocolate in-depth and in odd luxury. As soon, as I entered, I made a beeline for the counter. I was overwhelmed with all the chocolatey choices: pastries, drinks, squares, with the list continuing exhaustively, it even included a chocolate skull that might serve better as decoration than a treat. I excused myself and went to use the restroom, I dared not ask questions to understand my options, when my bladder was full. I might make rash decisions, due to my inability to focus. And with so many options in front of me, I wanted to sample what was right and balanced for me. I wanted to sample chocolate, I just did not just want to taste chocolate. My trip to the facilities was a small adventure in itself. I passed a room with a man working on his laptop. But the room, seemed to be, like a Sultan's rest-room. It had pillows, hanging lamps, and a cream like colored that reminded me of sun-kissed sand. I clipped the room. There is a Minion (from Illumination fame) chilling in one of the couches. Another picture shows, a fishing net (maybe) with make-shift clouds pouring out of it, also leafs and butterflies. It seemed to be the remains of a shipwreck but it also held decorations that could have made the space more beautiful. I believe, and I could be wrong, of course, that this room used to be functional. A place to lounge, and see beauty, while enjoying chocolate. Now it was a forgotten room, whose purpose never fulfilled, and thus had stuff scattered around. I am sure, everyone can relate to that feeling, of getting stuff for an imagined room that never quite materializes and thus the room becomes storage, more than anything. Kondo deliver us! After, I came to the cashier, I ordered a hot chocolate. Conrad made a point, that the hot chocolate I ordered was not the European sipping hot chocolate that I had talked about on our car ride there. He then. made a point, that I should read a menu and then ask questions. I ask questions, as I read the menu. I eventually, ordered two hot chocolates, (one for him and one for me) and then we sampled 12 chocolate squares--- a sampler. The total was close to 60.00 dollars so this is an experience that is not going to the local mart and buying a Hershey's bar. The 12 chocolate samples were just great and enough, there were bigger samples, which I considered buying, but the price deterred me. The one that I got was super appropriate for both of us, by the end I was enjoying slightly by force, I mustered the strength to finish the half marathon. The full marathon would have tapped me out. The samples came with a card. Conrad was the one who was consulting the card, so we could not what chocolate we ate. It was truly fun, to be with someone who read of the information of the card, and then we tried to identify the taste as the card described. I wish I would have taken a picture of the card, but honestly, I am more of a determine by taste taster than a person who wants to be informed of what he is tasting, to know what he is tasting. I do remember the worst tasting chocolate we tasted--- it had black tea infused into it, I do not remember its cacao percentage, each chocolate had a cacao percentage. The hire the percentage, the sweeter the chocolate. The black tea had this earthy and tea taste that was profound. I guess imagine tasting. a black tea without sugar that is kind of the taste I struggled with. I am glad I tasted this chocolate, however, because it was part of the whole experience. I did not drive to the beach and endure a pothole, I drove to the beach and was both intrigued and jolted by the bounce that the pothole produced. Some chocolates I really enjoyed, the hot chocolate was goodness in a cup. The chocolate sampler also came with an espresso that was split into two cups. I was provided a knife to cut each chocolate. I put the knife in the center with one arm, and use the other hand to pierce the chocolate. My halfs were not perfect. Sometimes Conrad got the bigger half square, sometimes I did. I annotate all this so one knows that when you visit ChocoVivo you will need to work, if you want to split those chocolates, but the work was part of the fun!

We were a few stores down from Laderach and we can smell the sweet scent of chocolates from a far. We decided to stop by and check out this fancy and yummy chocolate shop. As soon as we came in Laderach, the sales people were welcoming and greeted us. They also offered some samples and any sample of our choosing. We tried the strawberry chocolate and milk chocolate. They were both delicious. The chocolate was perfect. It was quality chocolate and semi sweet and not too rich. The combination with the dried strawberries were a perfect blend and balance. We left the store and purchased a couple of the pre packed milk chocolate and the strawberry chocolate. We can't wait to comeback to try other types of chocolates on Laderach's menu.

We marched from Target, beelined to the right towards Bloomingdale's, GameStop's just right before Bloomie's - grabbed the game, and bolted--because let's be honest, video games especially the latest of the latest version + the special pack features already cost an arm, a leg, and possibly a kidney. But fate (and sugar) had other plans. On our way back to the main drag, we locked eyes with Läderach. The glass cases were glistening. The chocolates were posing. I casually said, "Let's just taste." Famous. Last. Words. Fast forward $70 later, we walked out proudly cradling a 1-lb slab of FrischSchoggi--a chocolate hazelnut masterpiece so decadent it should come with a warning label. Rich, creamy, crunchy, sinful... basically chocolate that whispers, "You deserve this." The staff? Super friendly and dangerously encouraging. The store? Small, bright, beautifully merchandised--minimalist Swiss luxury vibes. The chocolates? Divinely indulgent. It instantly transported me back to Europe, standing outside Lindt, watching chocolatiers scrape, spread, and turn molten chocolate like it's edible art. Läderach delivers that same magic--except now I'm the one eating it instead of just staring longingly through a window. We thought GameStop was the financial threat... turns out Läderach is the real boss level LOL. But honestly? Worth it. Every. Single. Dollar. Come for the "just a taste." Leave with a lighter wallet and a very happy soul.

Pretty glad we stumbled across this place because everything we tried was really good. We got a couple of pastries and a croissant and honestly they were all pretty solid. The croissant especially was really buttery and flaky, hit the spot for sure. I will say that everything looked almost too good to eat but we managed. No complaints at all on the quality, you can tell they put a lot of care into what theyre making. The staff was pretty nice and helpful when we were trying to figure out what to order since we couldnt really decide. Not a huge deal but it was a busy morning and things moved along pretty smoothly. Overall pretty great little bakery. If youre looking for a spot to grab some quality pastries and maybe a coffee this is definitely worth checking out. Would definitely come back next time were in the area.

Champignon: Hazelnut crunch at the bottom with hazelnut creme. The mushroom cap had a small layer of sponge cake and hazelnut creme on top. Lychee rose: Very light on lychee flavor, there's a combination of lychee and a light rose scent. It's layered with sponge cake, 2 layers of jelly. Sweetness similar to Asian cake.
