Our waitress was very nice and even allowed us to taste a wine before we chose a bottle. It was kind of funny though, I asked for a taste and she brought out four glasses about 2 ounces each. That must not be a customary thing, I expected we would get one glass with a splash. But hey! I thought that was really nice! We enjoyed the wine and bought a bottle. I've never had a Romanian Pinot Noir before so I was a little hesitant before the taste. When the food came out, everyone's looked really good with the exception of mine. I ordered the truffle and beetroot risotto. A little background, I am obsessed with all things truffle and beet so I was really excited. I opted to add the prawns for a little protein. I should've put my hand next to the photo of the dish so that it gave it a little perspective, but it was very small and those "prawns" were tiny ass shrimp. I thought well at least if it tastes good, it'll make it worth it. I took a sniff, no characteristic scent of truffle, which I think any foodie knows is a super strong smell. I took a bite. Nothing. The dish literally had no flavor with the exception of the two Parmesan crisps. I felt like I was eating watery rice. After adding quite a bit of salt, I managed to bring out a hint of the beet flavor, but the truffle was still completely absent. The fish and chips was a nice sized portion, probably the best meal on the table overall. The pie of the moment which was mushroom and chicken tasted really good, but was a very small portion as well. The steak and chips was the upgraded 9 ounce sirloin from the original option on the menu. I'm not sure , what realm of the universe you could ever call that piece of meat 9 ounces. Like not even before cooking. Really the saving grace of the entire meal was when the manager came over at the end of the meal to collect the payment. He was so friendly and gave us a lot of really good suggestions for things to do in the area.

The decor's along the same lines as Tiger Lily, at least in the ground floor bar area & pretty comfy. Service was attentive and the Ladies is apparently well appointed. Somehow they manage to charge around 50p less per pint for their in-house brand (Cold Town) of beers than in the brand's Grassmarket flagship, although they stock only four of them.

The one at The Watering Hole is surprisingly spacious and had a good mix of people of all ages & families. I enjoyed a refreshing, cool pear cider and my nephew, a soft drink. It was a very pleasant way to pass an hour or so. Planning to make the most of whatever sunshine we can enjoy for the remainder of the summer and will return.

This is just what we needed (cuz I needed to take a chill pill from being grumpy). We were able to get our bearings, and the employees here also squared us as to where we needed to go for our hotel. Additionally, they also gave us directions to where to get an Edinburgh staple: Fried Mars Bar (yeah baby, YEAH!).

My first course was a thick and creamy Pumpkin and Parmesan soup which was more like a smooth puree with pickled pumpkin along with bits of hazelnuts and porcini mushrooms. My lovely boyfriend went for the soused mackeral with white crab meat, carrots, and dill. He reported the mackeral as being fantastic. For the main we both had the Serrano ham with sweet potato puree and a crunchy blackened fig which complemented the crisp ham exterior perfectly. The glass of white wine we had was glorious as well with the ham. Overall a well-thought out menu and an atmosphere to which I couldn't in good conscience give 3 stars.
