I was initially impressed by their thorough cleaning protocols during Covid-19. As patients leave, they do a thorough job of sanitizing chairs, objects and equipment which I appreciated greatly. Their service was impeccable. I had an easy time with the front office staff getting my insurance sorted before the visit - as for the optometrist herself, she was fantastic. Ive never had an optometrist show me scans of my own eyeball and explain them to me in detail. Its usually "heres ur prescription, get out now" hhahah. I for one love the attention she gives to her clients- I love understanding the problem and talking about what we can do to fix it. 10/10 overall visit. This will be my go to optometrist moving forward. Hope this helps to anyone on the fence about giving this place a try!

I didn't have to wait long for an appointment, but I was a displeased with the procedure for seeing patients, which is first come, first served on the day of the appointment. He starts seeing patients at 5pm (although he was at least 30 minutes late the day I was there), but the sign-in list opens at 1pm. For those of us able to run over to his office around 1pm to get our names on the list, this system is annoying but workable - I was #2 on the list. However I feel bad for those people who would have showed up at 4:30 or whenever to find a bunch of names ahead of them. There were families there who obviously were resigned to making a night of it - sending Dad to the nearby Wendys to get dinner for everyone, etc. When Dr. Mittl arrived, he walked through the crowd of waiting clients and put in the dilating eye drops. Thus far I'd not been impressed, but that changed when I was actually in the exam room. Dr. Mittl was a soft-spoken man who seemed both kind and competent. He did the necessary tests, wrote out my prescription, and wished me a good evening. My eyes are thankfully problem-free, so it was a fairly quick, routine eye exam. I would return to Dr. Mittl, but I wish he'd change to a more conventional scheduling system.

Dr. Robert Wertheimer with Essex Eye Physicians changed my life with expert cataract removal and…read morelens implant.  I now have 20/20 distance vision in both eyes - without eyeglasses! Prior to the procedure, I needed glasses even to see "the big E."  The feeling I had of a lump in each eye - gone!  Colors and white are now brilliant.   The doctor treated me with respectful care and attention, no rushing.  Waiting time at appointments was reasonable, and the staff were polite.  Prior to the procedure I was anxious and squeamish, and Dr. Wertheimer spoke calmly. During appointments before and after the procedure, Dr. Wertheimer had no difficulty administering eye drops and eye pressure testing.   The procedure itself took place at the Ridgedale Surgery Center in Cedar Knolls, NJ.  There the nurses were kind and patient.  I was given numbing eye drops and intravenous sedation.  There was no discomfort during the laser removal of the cataracts.  For the lens implant, I felt a brief pain in the first eye.  When I was getting eye drops for the second eye,  I asked for extra numbing.  I felt no pain at all that way.   I had a one month wait between the first and second eyes.  I would suggest a shorter waiting period whenever possible, because there is imbalance of vision between the eye that is done and the one that isn't done.

I came here for an annual eye exam. I actually haven't gone through a comprehensive exam for years…read moreafter my previous doctor stopped accepting my insurance. My parents came to see Dr. Roberts since COVID and praised their facilities. I finally decided to try coming after my parents' good experiences. I'm actually changing my insurance next year, so I don't think I will bother coming again even if they accept the new one. Multiple things I don't like: - They don't accept FSA/HSA cards. They charge a fee for regular credit cards too. I think it's so unreasonable for health facilities to accept insurances but not insurance payment cards. Everyone in this community is just used to paying things by cash and no one bothers with insurance cards. I can't tolerate a provider that doesn't match my lifestyle needs. - Crowded and long waits. When my parents first going during COVID, maybe less people went to non-urgent doctor visits, but they were saying how the waiting room is very spacious. When I went, I spent 3 hours at the clinic and most of my time was spent waiting. I was literally bumping shoulders with other patients sitting and waiting there. - Waiting room window. It's so sunny in the afternoon. Their blinds are insufficient to block out light. When your pupils are dilated (or anyone else there with eye problems), it's not healthy to be sitting in such a bright environment. There's not that many places you can look away to since the window lights up the whole waiting room and would reflect off of the furniture. I literally spent so much time just staring at my own lap. - Getting handled by multiple people. If I remember correctly, I went through maybe 5 different people for each step of the examination (plus plenty of waiting in between) including Dr. Roberts. It didn't make me feel like they were specializing steps. It just made me feel like I was getting whisked around from person to person. I didn't know who to look out for to go to my next procedure or who in general is taking care of me. In fact, I can't even tell who is Dr. Roberts until I finally met a woman who introduced herself as such. I literally haven't seen her around the clinic all afternoon except when she came to see me. - Rude attitude. My discussion with the reception around FSA/HSA cards was fun enough. I also don't like how they don't explain what needs happen at each step. I literally haven't been to an eye doctor in 5+ years. Don't complain about me hesitating over where to put my head and stuff. I keep having memories of a previous eye clinic where the machine blows a puff of air in your eyes to measure pressure or something and I hated it. I can't help but think about that whenever my eyes get really close to any apparatus and naturally jerk away. I can apply eye drops myself by looking into a mirror and placing accurate drops, so I don't do as well when people just drip things from mid-air. I don't appreciate hearing a rude comment about how I am sensitive. Regardless if I am or not, you should be treating patients with TLC.
