This was a fun place to celebrate Christmas! The ambiance is like Christmas blew up in there. It you need some cheer, seek this place. We felt lifted even though we didn't drink any alcohol. Our daughter has been long term in the hospital and we needed a break from there. This place was a great distraction. Every inch of the place is full of Christmas Cheer. Super fun. 10 out of 5 for ambiance. Our server was prompt and friendly. He did great recommendations and made sure our waters were filled. Menu is pretty typical for bar food. We decided to go with the Christmas menu. I went with the ROAST BEAST BURGER - Hand pressed chuck patty, shaved roast beef, herbed cream cheese, waffle fries, caramelized onion mayo, arugula, onion crusted house bun, side of fries. While my husband went with the KRINGLE CRUNCH CHICKEN SANDO - Buttermilk fried chicken breast, buttery stuffing, Swis cheese,cranberry sauce, garlic sage mayo, arugula,side of turkey gravey with a side of fries. I was staying in the area and went to this place based on the reviews. I to this spot two days in a row. It was walking distance to my hotel and it's one of the only bars on the strip close enough to my hotel that was open at 2PM. I tried the Cobb Salad! It was good but there wasn't enough dressing for the big salad. (I was only interested in the ranch not the other dressing that accompanied the salad). I asked for more ranch and I was charged $3 for it. (They never told me I was getting charged for it until I got the bill). They also forgot to put the boiled eggs on the salad. When I informed the bartender that the eggs weren't in the salad he gave them to me in a plate after I finished my salad, so it was a bit too late. I still tipped 20% but it would have been have been nice to at least get a small discount for forgetting the eggs. The first day I tried the roast beef sandwich. It was delicious but it could have used a bit more meat but other than that it was really good. Also maybe a bit more horse radish. I had the Ceaser salad as a side and it was superb. The fish and chips were also amazing! They perfected the batter. Chicken burger also amazing. The brioche bun tasted freshly baked. I would have given 5 stars if I wasn't charged $3 for a side of extra ranch dressing and forgetting the eggs which literally makes the Cobb salad. Good spot if you have never been the Whyte ave area. This is fast becoming my favorite bar. Not because Hudsons sucks. Not because H2O is squalid. Not because MKT is too expensive with poor service. It's the way these guys go the extra mile to please the customer. The craft beers are great. The cocktail specials are fun. (Hello taco Tuesdays with fancy margaritas). Oilers games are a happy event. Fun for all. Friendly patrons. You can talk to everyone. My latest goof was losing my ring in the bathroom after washing my hands. They found it, and i walked in the next day to find it waiting for me. I love the staff. The food is good and they stand behind that. If something is wrong with your dish, you don't pay. The atmosphere was fun and hey I love it when our history is saved which it was when the Strathcona Hotel (or the Strath as locals call it) was renovated! They have lots of local beer options as well which I am in support of (#supportlocal). We had the poutine of the week and the Juke Burger. The food was average. The poutine was tasty enough but the chicken pieces were overdone and the fries were warm at best. I'd like to try their regular poutine. The burger once again had good flavour but the hamburger was overdone and I wish I could have tasted the garlic mayo more. The crispy onions were a nice touch! When on Whyte Ave this is a great spot. It's a fun pub with unique decor and lots of high top seating. Good service for lunch today. I did like that during the day it seems a bit easier to hear your table talking. I may be aging myself! Food here is yummy and portions are generous. I love their poutines. I had the feature one and it easily could be shared for a group! Loving their drink features for the holidays. Jingle Juice is delish! I miss the Strat! But this is the next best thing (especially since it took over the space). Huge menu with a lot of classic and unique bar foods. Daily food and drink specials. A nice patio and lots of room inside. Friendly service. I came here for lunch and sat on the patio. I had the chicken fingers and fries, which is one of my bar go-to foods. The portion was huge, the fingers were crunchy, and the fries were home-cut shoestring fries that I really enjoyed. I hope to return. read more

The atmosphere was amazing. The Edmonton location, if you are an Oilers fan they have Oilers stuff everywhere, including an amazing McJesus painting on the wall. The service is some of the best service I have ever received in a restaurant ever. Server we had was super friendly. Couple other people greeted us and talked to us as well, we assume they run/work there, and if they don't they also have the friendliest customers. I had the dill burger which was great. The burger was cooked very well with dill kettle chips a piece of white cheddar and a deep fried pickle. They are kid friendly until 7pm, this being said they do not have a kids menu. They do however have Mac and cheese and chicken fingers and fries, my boy had the chicken fingers and loved them. They have a great selection of local craft beers. I would have preferred a larger selection of IPA's but the two they had on tap were lovely. Honestly... I'm not into it. It's a franchise. It took over from The Strat which I have really fond memories of. I would give this place 2.5. I was in good spirits due to being in the company of wonderful friends. But that was the highlight and not because of Leopolds. Food was extremely slow to the extent that they gave us a discount even though we didn't ask. Like, the staff felt bad that they just did that completely on their own. I would too if I worked there. The service was OK. We had two servers. The first was not great. But the second server who took over did her best and I won't fault her for that. I had the quesadillas which were good, but they forgot my dip and took an hour and a half. Were they worth 1.5 hr long wait? No. My friends had wings. Dip was forgotten for their own wings as well. The patio is "dog-friendly" but I'm actually glad we didn't bring our dog even though we were considering it. The road is super loud already, and then Leopolds plays music that is also incredibly loud. I don't think it's actually a good environment for dogs. After a long day out shopping the ave and needing to get in out of the rain, we hit Leopold's just as the sprinkle turned into a downpour. Shawnna P had been here before, but I was a complete newbie. Had never been in the old space, and was up for anything. We got a table by the window and ordered drinks. She likes the Phil Collins (basically, lemonade and gin), and I had the Shaft, with vodka, coffee, Kahlua, and Bailey's. For food, she got the Mac & Cheese bites (which I would love to have ordered, but was avoiding the fried section of the menu). Instead, I chose the Club Sandwich in a wrap, and the soup of the day, which was some sort of Chicken or Beef Noodle. Both were delicious! I've been here many times and it is top notch 99% of the time. Their poutine is one of the best in the city, and the cheeseburger poutine is next-level stuff. Their selection of beers is outstanding, and for people like me who can't drink beer they have a lot of other selections as well including their house "Fizz" which is one of the best seltzers you'll ever find. I give this a 2/5, the bartender was stellar but the server that was also the GM wasn't it. we made sure to get into the bar by 1:15am (I get thats late but they've advertised to serve food and be open til 2am before as we've been here for that.) at around 1:40 I went up to the bartender to ask how we could order food and he said the kitchem has been closed since 1:30. we had no service or check in by then, the bartender was the only person to help us after we went and asked at the bar since we couldn't get service from anyone. If you miss the strat then you probably won't mind this place as it seems they'te running the same lines from when the hotel was built. Been here 3 times and always end up with the worst evening headaches and hangover, even though I've never had more then 3 beer. They've got an excellent rotating selection though! The service is hit and miss. once great, once okay, and once not good at all and that time the place was empty. The food is in the same boat as that. Opening only a few months ago in the iconic Strathcona Hotel on Whyte Avenue, I feel as if I have more than just one connection to this restaurant. The first, is that the tavern that previously existed in the Strathcona Hotel (otherwise known as "the Strat") holds a very dear place in my heart. The hotel was built in 1891 making it a true piece of Edmonton's history. Meanwhile, I spent a large portion of my nightlife years within its walls in the mid-2000s. There was nothing like paying a visit to the Strat on a Straturday; lit like a cafeteria, tiny beers (sraft) and pickled eggs, bathroom stalls without doors and bars of soap with which to wash your hands. The dive bar to end all dive bars, we sometimes called it the "barnival" because it was like a bar and a carnival combined (they also served popcorn and hot dogs). I could reminisce all day, starry-eyed about what once was, and what this space meant to me. In more recent years, the entire building had been closed due to a fire and an extensive two and a half year refurbishment took place. Upon completion one of the first tenants to move in, taking the space of the old tavern, was Leopold's Tavern. And this is where my other connection lies. I spent over six years living in Regina, Saskatchewan and my family still currently resides there. As such, I end up visiting Regina a couple of times a year. I knew Leo's when they only had one location in the Cathedral area - the OG - and have visited for poutine and buckets of bacon in the past. I must admit that I have been very impressed by what that first humble location has grown into after only a few years. Eight locations in Saskatchewan, three in Manitoba, one in British Columbia, and four in Alberta. They're a brand now. Seeing them move into my beloved Strat felt like a merging of my worlds. I visited on a Saturday (Straturday) evening and walking through the doors once again felt slightly momentous. The door (on the corner) isn't in the same spot as the Strat used to be (on the side) and in fact most of Leopold's is situated in the old hotel lobby. But the spirit is still there and Leo's seems to understand and honour what once was. My heart strings were certainly pulled when I noticed the old "tavern" sign that used to sit atop the entrance to the Strat outside, now prominently displayed inside the restaurant. The rest of the space falls perfectly in line with the Leopold's esthetic and looks a whole lot like the OG location in Regina. That is to say: there is TONS of crap on the walls and it's wonderful. Hanging multi-coloured string lights, Polaroid photographs, and old-timey pictures of the hotel itself. You could never possibly see it all and half the fun is discovering what little surprises are hiding on the walls. The space is a vibe and you know that you will have a good time here. We grabbed a table and the friendly staff was attentive and helpful. Known for their extensive beer selection and plenty of draft choices on their rotating taps, I personally chose to visit the Divey Cocktails part of the menu where I could procure a Leo's Caesar (Our famous caesar made with chipotle tabasco sauce, secret spice rimmer and a pickle spear - $7.75). This caesar was phenomenal! Everything that you want a caesar to be, this savoury beverage was distinctly delicious thanks to the chipotle flavour. I loved the spice, loved the pickle, and could've slammed the whole thing in minutes. I doubt that I'll ever order a different drink at Leo's ever again. Next, there was absolutely no missing out on the Pickled Egg (A dive bar delicacy - $1.00), which used to be a staple at the Strat. For just one moment, everything seemed right in the world: I was back in the Strat eating a pickled egg. What's not to love? It's like a hard boiled egg except pickled, which makes it even better. If you've never tried one you probably should. I would die from happiness if Leo's added a "Strat combo" to their menu, where for like $4 you could get a tiny glass of draft and a pickled egg. That would be the whole entire thing right there. The fact that they have a Bucket of Bacon (With 100% maple syrup dip - $14.50) on the menu cannot be ignored. What is it? Well. The name says it all. It's a bucket of bacon. About eight strips of super crispy bacon with maple syrup to dip into! If this is wrong you don't want to be right. I liked the perfect crispiness and enjoyed dunking each bite into syrup. Leo's should consider getting their bacon from Irving's Farm Fresh, because while their current bacon is fine, no bacon is better than the stuff from Irving's. That would really put this bucket over the edge. Wings make a whole lot of sense in a bar and with 14 different flavours to choose from the Wings ($15.50) at Leo's will have a flavour for you - and maybe even a few that you've never tried before. I remember when this place was The Strat years ago. Good times. I went for a walk last night and decided to pop in. It seems smaller inside then I remember. I didn't wander around, I just went straight up to the bar. Place was relatively busy for a Monday night. Even more so during these Rona' days. I had a couple pints. The old Strat! It is definitely an upgrade from the former Strat hotel which was the quintessential dive bar on the Ave. Stopped by for a quick drink and appies on a Friday night. I tried their house lager (Big Rock brand) which was on special for happy hour and it definitely tastes like a Big Rock beer! I'm defintoy more of a fan of craft beer - so I'll stick to that next time. We had the fried pickles with dill dip, which were long vertical cuts of pickles in a delicious crispy batter. Also we had the cheesy pretzel pull apart breads with marinara sauce, which were a great pub food. The atmosphere is like a local pub feel with walls full of hockey cards and different sorts of decor. I would definitely stop by for a drinks and snacks again. My husband and I just came from our visit to Leopoldo's. What a wonderful experience! Waitress Amanda and bartender Matt were so friendly and music playlist was ON POINT! Play that funk/soul! Wr weren't that hungry so we decided to split a beef dip w curly fries. I have ordered many a beef dip in various restaurants and this one was by far the best I've ever had!! Ciabatta bun was fresh, the beef was tender and wasn't stringy and fatty. It came topped with Swiss, sautéed mushroom and horseradish spread. (I forgot to take a pic!) Curly fries were crisp, gravy was delicious and dip was perfect. We accompanied that with beer, coke and a Caesar. I told my husband that I can hardly wait to go back and have that sandwich again. Went last night (Sunday) and sat down at a booth by the wall at the back. BTW, the doorman was awesome and very nice! The server took our drink order and then the bartendar approached our table to get my food order. He was super friendly and he recommended the Juke Burger so I took his advice. The burger was FANTASTIC!!!! Don't get the fries with the burger, they were MEH and lukewarm. Our server was pretty good but seemed very over extended and unavailable. The music was far too loud for such a small establishment. It's not a concert venue. My friend and I could not hear each other and we were sitting about 8 inches away from each other. I would go back for the Juke Burger and when I do, hopefully the music isn't so loud that my ears are almost bleeding. read more
