I caught this business on a u-tube show I watch and made a note to stop by the bakery in Jeanerette, La boy I did good we got a loaf of the French bread and a few of the ginger cake and man they were good you can create your own ideals with French bread and the ginger cake are delicious right out of the package, the old building was also really something to see and the oven still works as great as it ever did , we spoke to the owner a real kind man he can tell you a lot of good story's about the old building, great place to visit and learn about the old ways that got us where we are today. read more

I am writing this review 5 years later because I cannot get this place off my mind. It is an old building that looks like it should be closed. Don't judge a book by it's cover! You walk down the side alley and enter through an open door. The aroma knocks you into heaven. We bought two loaves of French Bread and went back to our car. We were saving it for supper. We couldn't stand it. Kids were asleep in the back seat, so my wife grabbed a loaf and we devoured it. Best French Bread I have ever had. Kids woke up and found the other loaf. They ate it. This all happened within 10 miles of the bakery. I WILL go out of my way to hit this place again. Mail order is fine, but to experience this place... you gotta visit it! read more

I'm being generous but it's been around for so long. We made the drive cause we were bored and the bread is good but the ginger cake is not. The place is so old I'm surprised it can remain open as it doesn't look like it's been updated since 1884 and the condition of the building is scary. But it was an experience and nice people. Back home in Michigan, we just enjoyed a Lejeune's gingercake that we had frozen upon our return home last April. Take some home - they freeze/thaw wonderfully! If your travels allow, be sure to include this humble bakery in your itinerary. Just walk in and purchase a fresh out-of-the-oven loaf of bread wrapped in paper. Any place that only has 3 products and has been in business since 1884 must be doing something right. It's a small local operation on main street in Jeanerette - the door is actually difficult to find but you'll usually find warm, freshly baked French bread for sale in huge loafs as well as possibly garlic bread and their third product a ginger cake which is also quite good. The crust on Lejeune's French bread was surprisingly soft but the bread is tasty and has great texture - it actually makes a pretty good po-boy for those so inclined. If you're taking the long (read, more interesting) way from New Orleans to Cajun Country make sure to stop at Lejeune's for some bread and bring some nice salted butter or maybe some salumi & cheese to enjoy with it. read more

The best homemade bread ever! As a little girl we'd watch for the red light to flip on. That red light symbolizes fresh from the oven, melt in your mouth, bites of heaven. Once you take that first bite, childhood flushes your cheeks and for a second the only thing that matters is Lejeune's. Please rush to their doors. Take your little ones. Funky is not a strong enough word to describe this place. My friends took me there to get some of their french bread. Not what most of us up North call french bread. This is what they call french bread in louisiana that they make their pooh boys out of . Crusty but not hard soft white not too much yeast. They also make Cajun Pralines and some other kind of ginger bread thing. I am sure the make other items but this is what stands out. They do a big mail order business. This is an old shack type of building with reeeeeeaaaaaaallllllllly old ovens and all. If you can make a stop and get some warm bread just out of the oven mmmmmmmmmmmmmm what a treat!!!!!!! Off the beaten path 30 miles from Lafayette LA. They've been baking French bread since 1881. If the red lights on they have fresh hot bread. You'll pass sugar cane fields and one of only 18 sugar mills still producing sugar in America. read more

We heard about this great bakery when my company and I volunteered to help during the Great Louisiana Flood of 2016 and we ate the best food we ever ate, including the best bread from Lejeune's. Stopped by Lejeune's Bakery today in Jeanerette, :LA today enroute to New Iberia. Had heard so much about this bakery and wanted to give it a try. Purchased a loaf of bread and three ginger cakes, one of which was enjoyed this evening. You have to go in a side door and there is a small counter which holds the ginger cakes. The salesperson went and got me the loaf of French bread wrapped in a paper bag. Overall, I think it was worth the stop and we are enjoying the goodies from LeJeune's Bakery. read more
