A co-worker of mine raved about how delicious Keller's King Cake Amaretto Walnut Cream Cheese is, and insisted that I give it a try. Since it's a local bakery, I thought, "Why not? I'm always up for supporting my community." So, I headed to one of their downtown locations on Friday after work to place my order. The cashier, Nyla, told me to come back the next day--Saturday--around 10 AM for pickup. Saturday rolled around, and I could hardly contain my excitement. I woke up early and eagerly counted down the minutes until my pickup time. I arrived at the bakery at exactly 10 a.m. and approached the counter to give my name for the order. However, my enthusiasm quickly turned into confusion when one of the staff members returned, unable to locate my order. She asked me for my full name again, which I provided, but after another five minutes, another woman from the back emerged, confirming they still couldn't find any record of it. I expressed my disbelief, explaining that I had placed my order with Nyla just the day before. In response, Riley, another staff member, sought out Nyla for clarification. Although Nyla acknowledged that my name sounded familiar, she seemed to avoid making eye contact with me, which added to my discomfort. After further searching with no results, Riley asked if I had the receipt. Unfortunately, I didn't bring it along, to which she coldly replied that without the receipt, they couldn't confirm whether I had actually paid for the cake. It struck me as absurd--when Nyla took my order, she never mentioned that I would need the receipt for pickup, nor did I anticipate that my name alone wouldn't suffice. I challenged Riley, asking what the point was of taking my full name if they couldn't keep track of their orders. She explained that during the busy Mardi Gras season, they had numerous orders to manage, which seemed to be an inadequate excuse for their oversight. After what felt like an intense and unnecessary interrogation lasting over 15 minutes, Riley finally handed me the coveted King Cake, but not without delivering a condescending remark: "I'm assuming you've paid for it," she said, her tone and facial expression dripping with skepticism. This comment stung, especially coming from someone representing a local business I was eager to support. On the drive home, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had been accused of theft. So, as soon as I got home, I searched for the receipt. Once I found it, I drove back to Keller's to clear things up and prove I wasn't stealing. Upon my return, I approached one of the staff members and confidently presented my receipt, stating, "Look, I paid for this King Cake yesterday; I'm not attempting to steal." I asked if they would take back the King Cake and refund my money. Just then, Riley appeared from the kitchen, acknowledging that they had indeed misplaced my order and she had spoken with her manager who offered an apology. However, I firmly told her that an apology was insufficient after being treated as if I were a thief. "Do you now believe me?" I asked, but Riley simply reiterated her apology while I expressed that my morning had been ruined by the entire experience. To make matters worse, the manager never took the initiative to come forward and address the situation or apologize to me directly. To the management and owner of Keller's Bakery, I have several pointed questions: First, why was this situation not handled with professionalism and care? The failure to manage it properly is disappointing. Second, what would have happened if I didn't have the receipt? Would my word not be enough to be believed? Does trust depend on factors like race or socio-economic status in your establishment? This entire experience has left me with a bitter taste from the treatment I received. I can say with certainty that I will never recommend Keller's Bakery to friends or coworkers, nor will I return to support a business that lacks fundamental values of respect and accountability. read more

*King Cake Review* My dad is known to say that Keller's has the best king cake in the area. Now, my dad knows a lot of stuff about a lot of stuff but when it comes to king cakes I just kinda turn my ears off when anyone, including dear old dad, around here claims to know anything about king cake. I realize I sound like a snob...but y'all. People who live here just accept (without question or protest!!) that donut shops basically make a bigger donut, put purple, green and gold icing on it at and call it a king cake. Like no one is saying anything!! WTF people? That's a donut. For years this has gone on and donut shops were just counting all their extra money and probably laughing about fooling the Cajuns. There must've been enough transient people like me who were like "hey, you guys are being lied to. That ain't no king cake." The king cake was ready when I came to pick it up. It was very delicious, but there was no baby in it.

I used to be a huge fan of Keller's but it seems inflation has gotten the best of them. I purchased a medium amaretto walnut king cake (for $56) and upon pickup was very disappointed. The cake itself is tastes good, but is just tiny and wimpy and thin. In addition, they charged us $3 for the box! NOT worth the price or the drive (drove from Houston). Every year I order my king cakes from Keller's. They're home. And they're the best. Miss me with those carnival donuts that I loved as a kid. And I could go the rest of my life without eating a traditional NO-style king cake again, either. They offer a wide variety of sweets, including cookies, cakes, pies, tarts, turnovers, cinnamon rolls, and more. They also have frozen savory selections, like mini-meat pies, and seafood pies. They are located in a historic building in downtown Lafayette that has plenty of room for their many display cases. I grew up going to McKenzies bakery in New Orleans. When I moved I ended up in a place that thinks going to Costco is a good place to get a cake. When I stepped foot in Keller's, I felt like I had stepped back in time. Real pastries made by hand in-house. How I've missed this! I bought a huge box of a sampler pack. The Belgium bars were excellent, the petit fours, the chocolate sandwich were, too. My favorite was the chocolate dobash diamond. Oh my. So I'm not from around here and had never had an experience with king cake until this year when my husband got stationed at Fort Polk. I bought one from Wal-Mart and was disgusted and was told go to Lafayette and get one from a bakery and boy oh boy were they right! First let me review the staff. I told them I was new to Louisiana and king cake and they were overwhelmingly helpful and even gave me information on the history of king cake! The bakery staff was so patient when I was being indecisive and really took their time to help me out. For the actual product.... OMG! I bought two king cakes, the blueberry cream cheese and almameretto walnut both per the bakers recommendation. My younger kids seemed to like the blueberry cream cheese best. While my older children favored the almameretto walnut. The blueberry cream cheese is more tart and sweet and not gooey like a donut filling but more baked into the cake. The bread is like a Danish and was oh so fresh! The almameretto walnut has a thick filling that is similar to a caramel flavor and the nuts are finely chopped. So, we have several king cakes delivered to my office every year. I have never had a king cake that was so absolutely divine that I've tracked down the company to write a review on it. We had the cream cheese amaretto walnut delivered and although dense, it was incredible! Obviously, it had a cream cheese filling which I highly prefer over the more doughy types. This is a great little bakery in downtown Lafayette. They have a very large selection of pastries. The nice woman at the counter let us sample the chocolate sand tart because we weren't sure what it was (it melts in your mouth, by the way). Impossible to do any business with them if you're not actually in the store. Apparently there is merely one line. I've used Keller's since 1996 and ever since that time, they're near impossible to call by phone to make an order, to ask a question about items, hours, etc. I now live in another state. We decided this year to have a very large Super Bowl party with friends. We began calling them on a Saturday. It is now the following Friday; at least 4-5 phone calls every day for a week.... busy. I've unceremoniously just written them off for good. I'm not back in Lafayette enough to stop in and I'll never attempt to call them again. First,I have to admit I did not visit the bakery. A vendor delivered two king cakes from here to my work. One Butter Pecan and one Blueberry with Cream Cheese. Holy Wow! We have had a number of King Cakes delivered lately (Most from Louisiana, the others don't count) and they have all been decent, at best. They would get one white iced brownie each and then walk across the street to Borden's Ice Cream and get a scoop to eat with the brownie. Every time I pass through Lafayette I stop and pick up her the treat. Dobesha's are my favorite. White iced brownies are a must try if you like that old school sugar icing. The king cakes taste great, but this bakery falls short on customer service, especially over the phone. After 2 separate phone conversations on 2 separate occasions, I am less than impressed with the way customers are treated. The employees are not helpful at all. I have always been a big fan of your king cakes, but they are not good enough to justify putting up with such a rude staff. Just got off the phone after ordering a king cake from Keller's. The Amaretto Walnut Cream Cheese is amazing. Seriously, like no other. I had to call for about 10 minutes before the line wasn't busy. Was looking at the Yelp reviews and noticed several negative comments about customer service. The girl (she sounded young) could not have been more pleasant, informative and amicable. Wish I had asked her name, so I could give the kudos specifically to her. Anyway, Mardi Gras is a festive time where many tourists visit Lafayette. I have great memories of this place from when I was a kid. They've got the best king cake I've ever had. Hands down.

I ordered a number of 3 inch pies one week ago over the phone. I researched their website prior to ordering to find out what kind of variety they offered. I ordered eight 3 inch sweet potato pies and eight 3 inch pecan pies. They told me my order would be ready at 7 AM. The pies were not ready until 8 AM. Once I received the pies (which I had a friend pick up for me) there were pecans in the sweet potato pies. When I called to find out why, I was told that "this is the way they market them". When I asked why I was not told this, there was no answer given. Every where else in the world, when a person orders a sweet potato pie, one does not expect to have pecans in them! I am very disappointed in the customer service. They gave me a 10% discount, but have yet to offer to remake the pies the correct way! read more

On my 2nd attempt, I was on hold, then hung up on. 3rd attempt I mentioned that I called twice already and the worker doesn't apologize, only says they're busy and have a lot of people waiting. My grandparents ("Mama and Papa Bell") were good friends with Mr. and Mrs. Keller, and lived right down the street from this bakery. I've been going there since I was a kid...probably for the past 55 years. I have so many favorites, like the brownies with the white icing, the chocolate sand tarts, petit fours, "frogs," and more recently, their Amaretto Walnut Cream Cheese King Cake, which is to absolutely die for! The staff is always very helpful. Most of the ladies have been there, forever, which must mean they treat their employees well. I highly recommend this bakery and will always treasure the memories I had of it, as a child, when I would visit my grandparents, where Mama Bell would always give me money to walk there from her house, to get my goodies. My wife and I are king cake fanatics. We have found some really good ones, including one that I bake myself. We also visit the King Cake Festival as a way to taste a variety of cakes in one place. We stopped at Keller's Bakery and the staff were really nice. They assured me that their king cake will be the best I will ever eat. I was not going to buy one because they looked odd. The frosting was not white but very opaque and the cakes were very flat, not the big, beautiful cake you expect. The wife purchased a strawberry/cream cheese king cake, an amaretto/walnut king cake and some petit fours. The king cakes would rate at the very bottom of my list. They lack that definitive cinnamon/nutmeg/mace flavor that king cakes are known for and were very dry. The filling was pretty scarce and tasted cheap. the strawberry/cream cheese tasted like Philadelphia strawberry flavored cream cheese spread you buy at the grocery store. The better king cakes I've had are made with a strawberry filling (think jelly filled donut) side by side with sweetened cream cheese. The petit fours were ok. I much prefer Haydel's Bakery in NOLA. There petit fours are layered with fillings and are delicious. The wife and I each cut a piece of cake to taste and immediately threw both cakes away. $40+ wasted. read more
