This has been one of the worst garage/automotive repair places we have ever been to. Removed expensive components from our vintage Dodge truck and replaced with cheaper ones. Broke bolts and didn't seal things correctly resulting in oil leaks and intermittent starting. Avoid these guys!! Not qualified nor reliable. We had to repair their work many times. read more

When you arrive you are immediately treated like family by these patriots. The shop and the lot is covered with classics and each one has a story to share. Inside, it's a classic car owners dream. It smells like a race track and they make custom parts on the spot in many cases. My 67 Mustang was not even 5 minutes off the tow when this father and son team were all over it and had it diagnosed in under an hour just like he said. (The last place had it for 3 weeks w/no answers) The humor, integrity, service, honestly and speed of which they operate is stellar and worthy of 6 stars. I even got a Veterans discount. Initially, I saw other reviews at Legends when I first reached out to Greg, but dismissed them thinking they may have been isolated instances of dissatisfaction. The reviews are, in fact, painfully accurate. I do not recommend Legends for any work or service. I will give credit where it is due; Greg did come to where my vehicle was parked on a weekend and was able to get it running and charged me a fair price for his time. We discussed other work that was needed on my vehicle and I agreed to take it to his shop. That was in July 2018. Today, October 2020, the work is still not complete on my car and Greg has not refunded my deposit. In fact, I had to go to Small Claims Court in order to receive a judgement. I paid Greg a $5,000 deposit in July 2018 in a combination of cash and on my credit card. From there, for more than five months, it was one reason or excuse after another about why the work could not be done and why deadlines were constantly being missed. My patience was exhausted by December 2018 when I retook possession of my vehicle. When I arrived to take my vehicle, it would not even stay running for me to drive it away from Greg's shop; it died, repeatedly, in the middle of Hume street. It was clear no work had been done since it was dropped off the previous July. A week later, I returned and was able to retrieve my vehicle. I later sent Greg a letter requesting return of my deposit and received no response. I pursued resolution by filing a consumer protection complaint with the Virginia Attorney General, who informed me that it had closed my complaint as they were unable to resolve my dispute. I interpreted this as Greg not responding to the Attorney General's office just as he did not respond to me. However, after the Attorney General's office closed my complaint, I received an email from Greg saying he had the parts and would sell them to pay me. My question: if he had the parts, and my money, why did he not do the work? I ultimately filed suit against Greg in Alexandria Small Claims Court. As part of the filing, we participated in a mediation session to which Greg agreed to a payment plan over six months. That mediation agreement, reached in July 2020, delayed our court date until September 2020. Greg made one payment and then failed to make any subsequent payment. I returned to Court in September 2020 and Greg did not even appear for the hearing - despite my emailing him to tell him I would be seeking judgement in court and provided the date and time of our hearing. I literally told him I was suing him and *reminded him to show up.* Greg failed to show and, as a result , I received a judgement against Greg for the amount I am owed,. I am currently pursuing collection. What is most frustrating about this experience is that my deposit was paid partially on my credit card and partially in cash. I was able to dispute part of the deposit with my credit card company. If I had paid my entire deposit in cash, I would be out my entire deposit and Greg would get away with taking money for work he did not do. Let my experience be a warning to others. read more

Do not trust these guys! They will not finish your work and take your money. I've waited for a year for them to get back with me after I paid them a deposit. Whenever I called them to bring my car they either ignored the call or had an excuse. If you need your old school car repaired find another reputable place. The slowest mammal is the three-toed sloth, it moves at a maximum of 10 feet per minute, making it the slowest animal ever. The slowest auto mechanic is Greg Ramsey taking years to repair a car and doing it poorly. He's the combination of a "three-toed not so smart car"! When starting a relationship with this business it becomes like a bad girlfriend, who spends all your money and does not give you any love. You'll learn about all his ailments, health issues, family matters. He can't work when it's hot, can't work when it's cold, back hurts, teeth hurt, knees hurt. He hates all his customers, avoids most customer's phone calls, emails and talks bad about everyone including you! It takes literally hundreds of phone calls, emails, threats. The only way to get any work done is to show up at his shop. He even tried working on another car of mine, that also ended up ugly with a brake line leak that still leaks! Dealing with Greg is like your first marriage, just give him your house and decide to hate him early on. I moved on, I hope you do to....except for the claim I filed in court then I will move on! read more

Do not take your classic car for repairs at Legends or any vehicle. The owner, Greg makes promises he cannot keep such as keeping your classic car indoors and when they will actually can start diagnosis/ repairs. Greg indicated that they treat the cars like "gold" because they know it's a huge investment yet my Mustang sat outside under heavy rain for two days with no cover. I was so angry because I keep the Mustang garaged and never run it through a car wash, but more so because Greg and his son Nathan lied about it. My husband drives through the shop everyday and I swung by several times and each time it sat outside overnight knowing one of the locks is inoperative. Greg even went as far as taking a picture to show me it was inside but that very night it was left outside again but with a cover. Even then they lied about it but I have my own photos to show it was in fact outside after the shop closed. The other half of the bad experience is in the work itself. Every day they promised to start work on it but never did. I told Greg I could bring the Mustang home to keep it garaged until he can start the work but he always made promises that he was ready to work on it. After 12 days I finally got tired of Legends nonsense, disrespect, and carelessness and made the decision to pick up my Mustang. I gave them a courtesy call but they never answered or retuned my call so I showed up during business hours but the shop was closed. A few hours later I returned and picked up the vehicle but discovered paint damage from sitting in heavy rain. When I pointed it out, Greg and Nathan lied again about the Mustang always sitting inside. They also swapped out my battery without authorization indicating that mine went bad. They kept the $500 deposit I made yet nothing was fixed and it was returned damaged. Do not take your car to Legends. They are unreliable, untruthful, unrealistic, unprofessional, and a cheat! I am filing a formal complaint and reporting the damages to my insurance. read more

Greg is a fantastic mechanic and a very fair businessman. He took care of my 1989 car for years. He can work on anything. Like many, he's an over worked small businessman so sometimes you have to be patient, but he'll find a way to work you in (and he ends up working harder). He could easily be busy with a shop three times as big. read more

I've been on the hunt for a company to tune-up my 1973 Ford Bronco, and a fuel tank leak increased the urgency. I found Legends Motorworks online. No Yelp reviews, but I decided to take a chance. Please pay attention, 'cause I only want to say this once: if you have a classic / collector / vintage / muscle car, take it to Legends Motorworks. Don't think about it. Just call them: 703-548-4160. Greg and his team will take good care of you. Look, I expect the following from a repair shop: (1) call me before you do the work, and provide me with a realistic estimate of the cost; (2) unless something unexpected happens, have the work done when you said it would be done; (3) provide a bill that is in the ballpark of the estimate; (4) return my car as clean as when I dropped it off. Legends Motorworks checked all those boxes. But you see, my valve cover gasket seals were shot, and while replacing the seals, Legends repainted the valve covers. For free. And in the original color. Who does that? When I dropped off the Bronco, I told the service writer that I had printed out a coupon, but left it at home. When I picked up the Bronco, the bill showed that the coupon had been honored. Legends Motorworks is a group of people who love cars, love working on cars, and love doing business right. No surprises. No rip-offs. As long as I'm in the DC area, they have my business. read more

I found Legends Motorwork while looking on line for someone to work on my 1972 Ford Gran Torino: after bad experiences with other places I finally found a REAL mechanic. Let me put this in perspective: when I say I had bad experiences before elsewhere that is not the typical "ah man, repairs for my car where expansive so I'm pissed and I'm going to rant about it on the web to get back at them": I know cars, I have been in the car racing business for years and I know more than some of the techs that I have met before. The reason I choose to bring my car to a mechanic for some of the maintenance /work is that I have a single car garage and I don't have the proper space and time to do some of it myself. My Torino had developed a coolant loss that after some research turned out to be a badly sealed head gasket on the driver's side head. Greg and his guys agreed with me when I brought it there, and he also reconnected the ground wire between the frame and the engine that wasn't in place. The estimate and the wire reconnection were both free and we agreed I would bring in the car to have him do the work as the estimate I got was very good. The fact that I saw half a dozen of other muscle cars in his shop, along with what we talked about, made me feel comfortable the guy knew what he was talking about. I dropped the car off as agreed, then I had to leave to Europe for work and got regular email updates from Greg about the status of the job. He suspected the head to have a problem so I asked him to halt everything until I got back and he was OK with it (didn't charge me for the car sitting in his shop for 10 days), he got it magnafluxed and pressure tested and luckily it turned out to be OK. Long story short: he fixed the original problem, rearranged the wires in my engine bay area to look a lot more clean and neat, he repainted the engine with the correct blue color and adjusted the timing. Towards the end I was getting anxious about getting it back as it was a Friday and I was supposed to get the car to a charity event on Sunday so they stayed after hours to finish the job and I picked the car up on Friday evening at 8! The day after I noticed an oil leak from the intake gasket, so I went back to have it checked. I dropped the car off the same day and got a courtesy car for the day so that they could let the car cool down, fix the leak and let it seat overnight. I also lamented that the adjustment that had been made to the ignition had made the car a little sluggish on takeoff so they put it back to the original setting. I got the car back yesterday and I am happy with how it drives. At pickup I was told "come back after 1000 miles or so one evening, we'll have a beer and we'll check valve clearances". That to me is a very different attitude opposed to what I feel is the guideline in every other place I've been that seems to be "no matter what, every car that gets in here HAS to spend at least $800 dollars and it doesn't matter if it really needs it or not. Up sell, up sell, up sell". In the end the total cost was more than anticipated but they most definitely did a whole lot of more work than what we initially planned, none of which I felt was unnecessary. I think the cost of the work was fair and (although it's too early to be sure) the quality of the craftsmanship seems excellent. The oil leak, for which Greg apologized profusely is one of those things to be categorized under "stuff happens", especially in an engine who's surfaces are 40 years old... On a side note you should know that IF your car is a "classic" it will not be worked on in a hurry: they rightfully give immediate attention to customers who need their daily drivers back, as opposed to people like me who bring them a "toy" car. I don't think this is news to anyone who drives a classic, as it's the way it is everywhere, but it's worth to know: if you need your classic car back by a specific date, make sure you tell them and have an understanding about it before you leave, especially during busy summer weekends! UPDATE: weeks after I am still happy with the work done. read more

Extraordinary, great shop. Total recommendation. Cannot say enough! Legends worked wonders on my old Jeep after others couldn't. I gave them a list of about 10 things that needed fixed by a certain date so I could go camping/boating. Greg and his team got it all done on time - and for a reasonable cost. Another shop in the area had charged me so much money and it barely ran when I got it back. The other shop had installed an electric fuel pump and left the old mechanical pump in the engine, rather than putting on block-off plate. To make matters worse, it even had a dangerous fuel tank leak that they didn't notice. What a joke! The guys at Legends are much different. They were careful and thorough, cleaning the tank and easily fixing the tank with a new filler hose. Legends also found that the electrical and ignition system had been wired incorrectly. No wonder it ran so bad - hardly any spark. The feeble horn is now a blast! Greg also fixed the carburetor and adjusted the valves on the vintage overhead cam engine. Amazingly, they tweaked things here and there without charge, some of which were key safety items such as a sticky clutch pedal return and a floppy rear view mirror. The steering gearbox probably hadn't got any grease in 30 years - Legends filled that up, of course. Excellent service, too: Legends took the truck to get it inspected without any extra charge. This saved me a lot of valuable time. My Jeep runs better than ever. These guys are major enthusiasts and truly enjoy what they do, taking the time to get things right. So glad I found this shop! i have had my classic car there serveral times to no avail. They still havent fixed the issue that i took it there in the first place for. The owner who seems to be in another world claims to be a pontiac expert but in all my years of going to the drag races with family and friends have never seen his car or even heard of him. I spoke with a tech he had working for him last year, and he said the car ran 12's in the quarter mile. Eh some expert there, if you ask me id take it to Mike Minno's repair center in Fredericksburg. IMHO hes smarter, more down to earth, and gets it right the first time. Not to mention i think the owners on drugs, half the time he doesnt know what day it is. read more

I have several old cars from the 60's and Greg is my go to person when I need professional auto repair. He was able to diagnose an electrical issue on my customized 62 Olds and fixed several other issues he found during the process. His rates are fair as well as I have used other shops in the past which have really been expensive. I would recommend him to other auto collectors. read more
