I was a bit disappointed and excited at the same time when I came here…read more I was excited at the prospect of coming here due to the history of the building that this establishment resided in. I mean, how often are you going to be able to eat in such a historic building. The Butlers Retreat is a building that was a barn originally but now houses a pretty decent cafe. My disappointment came when we arrived here. We were between meals and that meant a very limited dining experience for us. It seems that breakfast ends at 11:30 but lunch doesn't start until noon. This left us with a very small portions to choose from, when I say small I mean that we only had four options to pick from. Unfortunately for us, we decided that we would go elsewhere to dine for lunch as we weren't looking to wait that long for our meal. However, I did take in the place before we left and I know that I would have enjoyed sitting outside. The views here are breathtaking. And being in Epping Forest made the appeal of this place that much more.

Coffee - outstanding Food - average. We tried a couple of burgers - wild boar & bacon and the chicken burger. Not very high on flavour. The chickpeas served with the lamb kebabs had more flavour than the kebabs. The hummus was below average and the wedges weren't as crispy outside or mushy inside as we like them. Staff - very friendly and helpful. Great to take a break and sip a coffee before or after a wander, if you want a good meal, I'd walk the 10 minutes to the Chingford village and try my luck there.

A great place to meet up with friends over a cup of coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Pleasant staff…read morewho have never made me feel rushed and who are willing to assist when asked.

When I got there I found out it shuts before the advertised time on the web. When I pointed this…read moreout the waitress didn't care a jot even though I pointed out this could be very disappointing for customers coming from out of the area. I have several food intolerances so when asking about the ingredients in their homemade cakes I got a message back via the waitress that she can't guarantee the cakes were free from what I was intolerant to. As people with food intolerances are always ending up having to go without gorgeous food, I asked if I could have more detail of what was in the cakes so I could make a decision on what it was I could or couldn't eat, just in case there was something I could have. This was very obviously an inconvenience to the waitress and the manager who had baked them. She tried again to say she couldn't guarantee anything because obviously this was the quickest way to solve the issue for herself, but after explaining that I'd like to try to see if there was something I could eat, it was again very plain that I was wasting her time. It was late afternoon and they weren't busy, so I would have appreciated a couple of minutes of her time without the attitude. After finding out there was indeed a piece of cake I could eat, I sat down to enjoy it only to be served it with more attitude by the waitress. If she could have got away with grunting at me I sure she would have! I unfortunately had to ask for a pot of hot water as the tea didn't come with one, and AGAIN got a look saying 'are you bothering me again?!'. Cleanliness was also not great with tea-stained table clothes, dying roses on the table, and also dust on the teapot holding the roses which was next to an open sugar bowl which no doubt had the same amount of dust in it! Also, amazingly, a dog walking around the kitchen area with it's bed behind the serving counter!! (Yes, I am about to inform environmental health dept!!) Lastly, my table was being cleared before I had finished. I did notice however, that the other table still in there didn't have their table touched, so I'm guessing that was a touch of nastiness from the waitress also. I was there looking for a place to take 18-20 friends for my birthday which is coming up soon as we fancied a gorgeous afternoon tea, but we will definitely be going somewhere else after that experience!

Being new to some over sea flavors, I decided to go with a egg, meat, and goat cheese quiche. It was the BOMBDIGGITY!!! I asked the lovely young lady behind the counter, what would she recommend. I explained that I have never had goat cheese, and there was another one that had Feta cheese, which I am very familiar with. She said I would not be disappointed with goat cheese... so why not? I'm open to exploring different cuisines and tastes of life... and wow! It was unreal with the savory explosion of the onions and special sausage that they used, with a center topping of melted creamy goat cheese. It paired very well with my coffee in the morning, as we waited for our rented double decker bus to take us on a five hour tour of the magnificent city of London. We toured the city with fellow Seahawk fans and the breakfast was just what we needed to give us energy to scream our heads off, and lose our voices! My wife had ordered the toasted Rueben sandwich, which was a perfect medley of meat and cheese, and sauce. Many thanks to this hidden gem. Heads up, it was cash only. Please take the time to give this place a chance... you won't be disappointed! Cheers and Happy Eating!

This place is a gem. So good my husband has been coming here for almost 20 years. The outside is of…read morea quaint little cabin in the woods, and the decor inside follows the pattern; the walls, tables and benches are made of logs + plenty animal skins and kitsch parafernalia to match. There's also a fireplace, which I never saw lit but there's hope. The big boy's breakfast is their piece de resistance; *amazing* sausages, and the rest of the trimmings don't disappoint either. I especially love the tinned tomatoes drenched in their sauce, great to mop up with the generous pieces of soft, buttery bread you're given with your meal. Another great plus for me is the milky coffee; basically a glass of hot milk with what I believe it's instant coffee (I might be wrong here) but DON'T knock it till you try it. It's delicious and you'll probably order another. There's also cakes and other stuff, but I haven't yet bothered to try as the full english is so great. All the food is *very* reasonably priced. The main problem (to me, not to the café owners!) is that everyone knows it's good, and the cabin tends to get packed on weekends. It can be disappointing to travel all the way to Abridge to find that all the tables are taken + there's a queue or bikers who got there first waiting for the next 5 ones to vacate. It's not a big place, and during winter it's too cold to sit outside. The tables are packed together and communal, which it's not everyone's cup of tea. But the fact it's packed reinforces how good the grub is. Arrive earlier or later on the day, beat the crowds and give it a go! It's totally worth it.
