Expectations exceeded! Since this is not the first time in my life training a striking martial art I think it's fair to say my review is objective, that being said. The instructors at Legacy MT are ELITE STRIKERS & second to no one, however they're all extremely humble so they won't ever admit that. I chose Legacy because I wanted to supplement my grappling with some striking to increase my overall self defense. (I'm a firm believer in "you ain't gotta get ready if you stay ready") The instruction at Legacy is amazing, the passion and enthusiasm the coaches have for their art definitely rubs off on the students and they always take the time to walk around the room and make sure everyone understands what's being taught. Coaches refer to you by name when assisting you and they help you improve your technique drastically by making the smallest adjustments. They emphasize safety over everything and always push students to challenge themselves and reach that next level. I honestly did not think I would end up loving Muay Thai as much as I do, but when REGULAR TRAINING DAYS end up FEELING like I just sat in A MASTER CLASS on striking, it's hard not to! Ivan was my coach for the intro Muay Thai class and he was so good at breaking down the technique and why quality is better over quantity. I came in for my first class without much prior knowledge on the equipment and sport in general. On my first class, I walked around cluelessly for 10 minutes trying to figure out who was in charge, and when I finally signed in he told me to sit down to wait for the instructor to come get me...but no one ever came? Class was awkward because I had no idea what I was doing or how to hold the padding. I ended up pairing with a guy who was a blue belt and he helped me out, but I could tell he was annoyed...he wasn't supposed to be the one teaching me. I wouldn't go again personally, hoping that was a slip-up and other people aren't forgotten. The class would be more fun if I knew what I was doing. read more

One of the best drop in experiences from a traveler. I was in town for work, so I decided to call ahead to see if I could do a drop in class. I was told 100% that was okay and showed up to introduce myself. From the start I was welcomed in, given the layout of the gym, and flow of the class. I try to be extra humble walking into any gym, but as a stranger I felt more than welcome. There was a family feel among the students, and I think this is a direct effect that Coach Ivan has among his students. The intro class was well structured (jump rope, warm up, technique breakdown, partner drills) and I got to hit Thai pads with a member. I could not ask for more. To give a fair review, I have to compare Legacy Muay Thai to another Muay Thai school. Prior to training here at Legacy, I trained at another traditional Muay Thai school (Sorry I don't want to name because my good friends still train there) at UH for about 3 months. I would still be training there but the price was too steep and the training days were Friday and Sunday night, which isn't the most accommodating. Based on a recommendation from a personal trainer from 24 Hour fitness I decided to give Legacy a try. Pros: 1-White mats in the gym. White symbolizes cleanliness and purity. 2-Coach Ivan Flores-Teaching and coaching are based on the same principles. In Coach Ivan's case, he's is an excellent coach/teacher. Whatever striking combinations he demonstrates, he always gives reasoning to support his combos. He demonstrates, explains, gives reasoning and then demonstrates again to make sure everyone understands. Exactly like a teacher in a classroom. He also walks around and makes sure everyone is doing it correctly. His demonstrations are a beauty to watch. Its Muay Thai in its most purest form. 3-Coach Ivan Flores (again) -Striking Coach for UFC Max Holloway. Nuff said. 4-If you pay the unlimited membership, you can train JiuJitsu with Rylan Lizares (another 5 star coach) as well. 5-Rest of the team members are super cool, no attitude. This place has a warm, friendly and family oriented atmosphere. 3 classes, 3 Levels Beginning, intermediate and advance. Men and women train together. 6-Next to Savers. In case you forget your shorts you can buy one for $5 if you don't mind the stank. 7-Next to Sack and Save if you need water or something to eat. 8-They compete (in street terms SCRAP legally). If you want to test your skills we compete in the FIL-AM Man Up Stand Up fights. 9-Cool background music-Jiujitsu coach Matt plays and excellent mix of music on his iPod. CONS (none really): 1-Homeless people lingering around. They are pretty much not a threat, but there was a homeless lady who I witnessed taking a $hit behind a tree (dry heave) However, she no longer hangs around. 2-One bathroom (but there is also a shower). No biggie. You can always go to Burger King to use the bathroom too. 3-Street parking (but I've never parked more then a block away). 4-They ran out of Legacy Muay Thai shirts. :( TIPS: If you are in the beginning class, find a partner who has some experience holding pads and knows some technique. When I first joined I got kneed in the groin. Lucky it wasn't in my nutsack he got me on the shaft. Stung like a mofo. On another incident, my partner missed the Thai Pads and kicked me in my pelvis. WTF! It was then I decided to move up to the intermediate class since I already had 3 months training. I've been here for a year and a half now and Im so fortunate to learn from Coach Ivan. With his 20 years of experience he is highly knowledgeable. Its an honor and a pleasure to be a student at Legacy Muay Thai. 5 Stars without a doubt! Highly recommended. read more

Pros: - Friendly staff - non-egotistical members - Open air gym - Great cardio workout Cons: - Small space, Classes get pretty crowded in the evening - Not many bags - Limited parking, like everywhere else in Honolulu. Get there early, or park in the shopping center. Overall: The only reason I stopped going is because it is a bit out of the way now that I moved out of town. I took classes here for 2-3 weeks while I was living in a Honolulu hotel. Seems like every class starts with a warm-up, then shadowboxing, then you work with a partner with contact pads to practice what you learned during the shadowboxing. Previously, I took Krav Maga classes and walked-in to 1 muay thai class off-island. The main difference I noticed about those previous gyms and this one was the number of, and use of, bags. My previous gyms allowed each student, or pair, to use a bag to practice on. I feel like this helped me get the feel of making contact better, and increase my power, before working with a partner. This gym has about 3 bags, which were not used during the classes I attended. Even without the bags, you will get a great cardio workout though. The instructors and students are friendly and make corrections respectfully. The gym itself is an open air warehouse space shared with a BJJ program. Like I said, I still be going there if I lived or worked in Honolulu. read more

I just started taking beginner muay thai classes 2 weeks ago and I absolutely love it. I have never taken any kind of martial arts in the past but have always wanted to do something different and also get in shape. I started with a free trial class to see if it was something I would like enough to keep going to and sure enough I'm now hooked! All of the staff is very friendly and helpful. Wow! Where to start! This place is absolutely the best! I have been training there since February of this year and it's been awesome every step of the way. I was a straight noob when I first joined so to anyone who is reluctant, don't be. Everyone at Legacy Muay Thai is awesome! From the Coaches to the students and everyone in between. A welcoming family atmosphere with no egos. Don't get me started on how well the Coaches teach because I could go on forever. If you want to learn the Art of Eight Limbs for fitness, self-defense or competition regardless of your age, gender or experience, you will love this place.
