So we headed to Gracie Technics, where Matt, the instructor, not only welcomed me despite being a total beginner from the mainland--he encouraged me to join in. I can't speak much to the techniques since I didn't (and still don't) know what I was doing. I was visiting the island for a few days and was able to drop in on a Saturday advanced gi class. Everyone at the academy was extremely welcoming and friendly. Class was structured into warm ups, techniques, and live rolling. Professor Matt's teachings were very detailed and well explained, he was able to circle the room and answer all the questions asked. Lots of variety in rolls - different belts, body types, and grappling styles. The mat was filled with solid rolls and killer technicians. My son and I went there for a jiu jitsu class. What the professor taught was very helpful and I was able to apply the concept that same night during one of my rolls. Got in a number of rolls, the guys there are very technical. Everyone was welcoming, we felt right at home. A good intense workout where I learned something, thank you GT BJJ for having us. They are flexible with their lessons. I told them that I only can come in one day a week and they said I can come here whenever they offer the lessons which is awesome. It's not a set schedule which is good for my rotating shift at work. They have discounts for multiple kids. 25% for the second kid and 50% for the 3rd kid. Lessons are around $140 Gi: you can buy it from them which range about $90-$120 depending on the size. ... or you can buy your own special one. You need to remove your shoes before entering the room. No AC... just fans. So bring cold water... if not they sell water for $1. read more

Just started training and attending the intro to jujitsu classes. I've only been in three classes so far with technics but I've already learned so much within that small amount of time. Sebastian is an awesome teacher, Down to earth guy that really cares for the students. Whenever I have a question or have trouble with understanding certain drills/moves. he gladly guides me in the right direction and teaches me first hand on how to improve. All while being patient and understanding especially if I don't get something right the first time. Solid instructor. Matt was also really helpful and welcoming. provided me with all my questions and concerns in a timely manner over the phone and in person. He kindly let me sit in on the advanced classes to check it out and made me feel excited about jujitsu. The people in the technics community are down to earth and make me feel right at home. Just wanted to give a little shoutout for the kids classes at Technics! My 4 year old son has been coming here for about a year now. He is in the Ju-Jitsu Games class and he loves it. The kids have lots of fun while learning moves and making new friends. I love that this place is super legit in case my boys end up truly loving the sport. But for now, I think it's great that they are in touch with the FUN factor as they teach the kids...Everyone there is great and it's awesome how they even organize awesome family events (like Trunk or Treat on Halloween!). Phenomenal instructional with even better training partners at Gracie Technics. I attended Gracie Technics after noon class while traveling for work, and the gym felt like I was training back home. The facility was nice with super clean mats and spacious areas to change. The bathrooms were really clean and well attended. One of the lead instructors, Matt, was very welcoming and easy to work with as we went through the waiver process and got ready for class. I have kids who train back home, and watching the environment and kids classes at Technics with Matt teaching, I would enroll them at Technics if I lived on Oahu. I was in Hawaii for a work trip and it was recommended by my instructor at my home gym in Ohio that I stop by Gracie Technics while I'm out here. The experience was outstanding. Professor Matt walked us through some really cool advanced techniques for the first 30 or so minutes, then we spent the next 45 minutes rolling with everyone in class. Everyone was immensely friendly and welcoming. Everyone I rolled with was also a very high level jiujitsu practitioner so I was able to learn a ton in my one session. Thank you team! One of the best ways to work out that I've experienced. I'm taking both fundamental muay thai and fundamental jiujitsu and I enjoy both classes. Muay thai focuses more on striking (punches, knees, elbows, kicking, and clinching). The coaches focus on one technique for a few weeks (i.e. taking away the jab) and teaches us how we can use the various strikes with the technique. In fundamentals jiujitsu, each class goes over one ground technique (i.e. taking the back that sets up the rear naked choke) and one standing technique (i.e. leg hook takedown). I really like that this gym teaches jiujitsu more from a self-defense perspective rather than competitive/sport jiujitsu. The coaches are great - they're able to break down each technique where even someone as uncoordinated and not as athletic as myself can do the positions, submissions, and takedowns. In addition to breaking down the details of the technique, the coaches explain why we do it this way and why it works. Everyone at the gym is super helpful and very welcoming. When I started, one of the jiujitsu coaches helped sign me up and made sure to introduce me to the muay thai coach for the night. I remember being a little nervous since I don't know what I was doing when warming up, but one of the girls came by to partner with me and introduce herself. I felt way more comfortable as I continued to talk with her and now she is my usual partner in both muay thai and jiujitsu.
