I wanted to get some railings installed on my father's front porch. He recently had some mobility issues & I thought railings would be nice. It was literally a needle in haystack deal finding a company that does railings. I came across Leeway Iron after a bit of searching. I spoke with Joyce who was extremely helpful. They sent over a design and we figured out what would work & was aesthetically pleasing. They measured the area and figured out a slight curve would work & make the railings more functional. Man, we couldn't be happier. Jose spent extra time getting the railings the correct height for my father and installation was a breeze. I'm sure your could find someone cheaper but once again it couldn't be more true. You get what you pay for. Man, these things look awesome. Like others, I wish I could actually comment on their work. I sent an email with a pretty clear explanation and a photoshop mock-up of what I was looking for, (custom, iron porch columns.) After three weeks of not hearing back, I followed up. Spoke on the phone with Joyce, who was very nice, and she said they should be able to do it, and that their estimator would contact me when he was back in the office the next day or so. Fast forward a week and a half, I get a nice email saying: "We thank you for the opportunity to bid the above referenced job but at this time we are going to have to pass on this particular job. Please consider us in the future for any other projects you may have." They were kind enough to give me the phone numbers of two other companies that I had already contacted who also didn't reply. This seems to be a trend in the Oakland ironworks community. I was annoyed at first, then thought..."y'know what? Maybe I'm asking for this wrong. I've never had custom metal columns made before, maybe they think I'm asking for something else? Maybe they can help me explain to another company what I'm looking for if they still don't want to do it." So I wrote them back and asked if they could tell me why they were passing on my job. To which I got ZERO reply. Although, maybe if I follow up in 3 more weeks, they may tell me. The sad thing is that I was hoping to give my project to a local, small business. But now I'm going to order something similar online. I'm guessing it's not a big enough project to make it worth their time. But they didn't know that I was hoping to maybe at a later time talk to them about a new fence and gates. Whatever. Your loss. read more

It doesn't get any better then leeway iron works as far as contractors go, period. From the first time i talked to Audrey over the phone and got the ball rolling, easy back and forth via e mail and phone. Made an appointment to meet with John in the office and look at some designs, they have lots of pictures of past work they have done to give you some ideas. We ended up ordering 2 gates for the side of house, 9 ft wide, double swing powder coated ect. and my father in law also ordered 2 small walkway gates at the same time for his house. a week and a half from custom design and ordered to installed, that's what i call quick service. Our gates turned out beautiful and their guys that installed them couldn't have been nicer, going over the install with me and making sure things were how i expected them. My husband and I are having granite countertops installed in our kitchen and had a problem because 6 feet of length was unsupported by cabinets. The contractor thought a steel support would be agood choice. Where to go? A friend recommended Leeway Iron Works and I am so glad he did! I told John and Audrey (the owners) what I needed and they immediately said yes. I faxed over specs and drawings and they fabricated my steel plate in one day. It was a simple 6 foot long piece, but Leeway made it seem like this job was as important to them as it was to me. I really appreciated that. I have already recommended their work to our granite installer and a couple of friends who need more elaborate pieces. We will be working with them on a new railing soon. Thank you, Leeway! These guys did a railing extension on my house. They scheduled quickly, and literally made the railing better than I imagined it. I thought it would be a straight rail, but they put a curve into it to match the curve of our sidewalk, painted it, all around pleasant to work with and highly skilled. read more

These people will dick you around for months without committing to timelines or estimates. If you'e lucky enough to get them to respond to your emails they will act as if they are doing you a huge favor by even talking to you and that they are bothered to have to be on the phone. The front porch/deck of my townhouse had a clear drop to concrete pavers, and a guard rail was needed. A small job, yes, but a very necessary one...it was an accident waiting to happen!! Really happy about the work they did for us on a metal fence in our backyard. We have an association that manages the look of all of our fences, and they have relatively stringent requirements. We tried a number of other providers, and getting the look to be the same was quite difficult. So we really appreciate the efforts of Leeway Iron Works -- the side fence they put up for us looks indistinguishable from the association - provided front fence, except that it looks better :) It was a pleasure dealing with these folks as well, they are really nice people. read more

I cannot comment on their work, but I can comment on what my experience has been trying to schedule an appointment for an estimate of the iron fences for my house so far. On 8/27/12, I left message to Joyce, no return phone call. On 8/28/12, I talked to Audrey about the estimate schedule. She told me that John, the estimator, was very busy and would be on vacation during the Labor Day week. But she would pass along my message to him. Today, 9/6/12, I still have not heard from John. I guess I will give them one more try again. Talk to a lady, I believe it is Joyce, telling me that they are very busy and John is two weeks behind on his schedule. I say to the lady I can wait two weeks and ask her if she would schedule an appointment for me. She tells me straight out that they do not even want to come out to give me an estimate. She suggests that I can take some pictures from my property where I want the fences built and email her the pictures, and they will give me a rough estimate that way. So far, I find them difficult to work with, quite the contrary to the other people's comments. I guess their business are doing so good that they do not care anymore new work prospects! read more

Absolutely perfect! Needed a custom gate fabricated for our house - got a quote within 24 hours and the gate was ready two days after signing agreement. They came to the project site to ensure the measurements were accurate and after completion even delivered the gate for free. Materials were exactly as specified, and they were spot-on the layout. They had to come back to re-drill a couple of holes, but they did so right away. By lucky chance we discovered Leeway when visiting our stoneworker on the same street. Audrey & John run a clean & tight ship. We were initially amazed by their enormous and spotless warehouse workshop, and we'd been in more than a few. They followed up with excellent craftsmanship; a 2nd generation shop that produces not merely a high standard of workmanship, but artisanship, as well. And they gave excellent advice. Audrey & John knew better than we the effect we were after in our interior stair railing (over an open atrium), and the end product is beautiful. They have lots of pictures & past projects to help define the style you're looking for and, on top, they were kind & patient in our search for just the right design. Based on the good reviews we called Leeway Iron Works to arrange to get a quote on a stair rail for our newly installed stairs. We know it's a small job but thought they could help. When I called i spoke to Joyce. She was very unprofessional and talked over my questions and was not easy to talk too at all. She told me the best way to get a quote or a referral I would need to send a picture of our stairs and what we wanted. She said they were booked out 3 to 4 months and it would take a week to get a quote or referrals. We figure since it's close to the holidays we understand. She actually responded after several hours saying. "we are contracted with several jobs all at once and at this time we will have to PASS on this particular job" since she knew in the beginning we just wanted a stair rail, instead of wasting my time and having me upload the pictures she could have been upfront in the beginning. Thank goodness we caught her drift and lack of professionalism and lack of interest in taking on the job. We were able to find a reputable company to suit our needs. If the receptionist represents the company In that manner and doesn't respect prospective customers who knows what type of service we would have received. read more

I decided the front of my 1929 Tudor home needed something to dress up the facade, so I decided to add some iron pot shelves. I got a good price so I thought at the time and the first one was installed. I then decided I needed another one and the price was twice what I thought it should have been. I then decided to go to a local iron business (a real one) and met with John. I brought in a lousy sketch and showed it to him. We thumbed through a couple of catalogs and got some unique idea's. He threw a price at me, 1/3 less than the other company and I approved it. No deposit, no nothing, just a handshake. They called within a week (his office staff is awesome too by the way), I went over and picked it up and I could not believe the quality. Long story short, I hired them to pull the one down that I just had installed and install a new one similar to the one that had just been fabricated. This one turned out every bit as beautiful. Long story short, I am out a few hundred dollars for not using this place in the first place but we are thrilled each time we pull up to the house. Do yourself a favor, save yourself a lot of grief and money and go to Leeway. You won't be sorry... read more
