Fish and chip day; how could I forget?…read more Remembering at about five o'clock and furiously throwing on clothes, I ran to the local Borzas. The good thing about forgetting until this stage of the day, was the lack of a queue for half price fish and chips. Fish and chips exactly as you would expect from a chipper, served in paper packets. I sat and ate mine on a little patch of green in Dalkey (sit by the sea if you can, in Billy Goats Park, but I just couldn't wait until then). Fish; good crispy batter; needs salt. Chips; just go all out and get cheese plus garlic sauce; always a must. Everything you expect from a chipper; this delivers the best. The stars are knocked off only because one, I've had better in places like the Fish Shop, and for the service which at times can be slightly unfriendly/ unaccommodating. Overall, good. Does what it says on the tin. Watch out for queues though; Christmas eve is a nightmare!

Who doesn't love a cheeky bag of chipper chips on the fly once in a blue moon? Finding myself…read morewalking past one evening after missing lunch and recognising the famous Borza name I decided it was fate and ordered a bag. I was surprised at first when I was told it would be 10 minutes - as generally 5 minutes usually means 10, what could 10 mean? As I had an appointment I kept my eye on the clock went to feed the meter and when I came back my chips were handed to me in a bag. I eagerly sytolled down the road sampling said chips and was so disappointed, they were pale, floppy and just did not taste good. Back I went and was courteously given a generous replacement bag which were very little better. I was told it was the vinegar which had made them so flaccid and soggy - however in my experience a crispy crunchy golden chip has a texture which makes the vinegar slide off it, enhancing the taste not sopping up the moisture. I was at that stage late so at a loss I popped them in the back of the car instead of binning them as I was tempted. When I got home I had the oven on and never being one to waste anything thought I would pop them in the oven and see what the family made of these off chips. Well miracle of miracles 10 minutes later, even though I just popped them in bag and all and did not use a baking tray, they came out DELICIOUS. Golden crispy, crunchy, lovely. Proving that they were just not cooked enough or indeed well which is odd as I had to wait so long for them. So unless you are getting the chips to cook yourself at home, I would avoid, avoid, avoid. It really does take a special set of skills to have professional frying equipment and be able to turn the usually ever tasty and desirable chip into an inedible mess - and judging from my home experience, nothing wrong with the potato just not cooked right or enough. If a McDonald's chip was a 10 and an oven chip was a 4 - these chips were a big fat pale floppy ZERO. Libero Borza of Malahide, if you are reading this, I know this is not your shop and I am so sorry but this is a shame on your family name and long standing tradition of excellence,

During our research before we left we saw a video talking about Bunsen. Just seeing the high quality of the ingredients made it one of our must try stops in Dublin. As we do when traveling, we start and end the day eating throughout the day. We popped into Bunsen to finally try the legendary burger around 4:30 pm. Because we were there at such an odd hour, we were the only people there. When you visit Ireland, the pub culture is real and most pubs start to get quite busy around 5:30 pm. Since Bunsen isn't a pub and wasn't located in a particularly touristy area , it didn't surprise me they were empty at that time of day. What stuck out the most at first was the super friendly service right from the door. We were sat at a small banquet of tables against the wall and checked out the menu from QR code link on the table. We were there for their original burger so that is what we ordered. No sides and water to drink. I couldn't be filling up too much yet. It was pretty early after all and we had a lot of places to stop yet. The menu isn't huge. They focus on doing one thing well and keep it at that. I like a restaurant that doesn't try to be everything. Our burger came out within 10 min and it was juicy, hot and fresh. Presented beautifully wrapped. We shared this one burger because, we knew we had lots of food to eat later. Immediately after eating the last bite I wanted to order another. It was really that good. Such perfection! This will be the burger I compare all others in Ireland to.

0 stars (apparently yelp doesn't allow this....)…read more I happened to be chatting with a pal on the phone outside the window. A packet of fries was sitting under the heat lamp for the duration of our conversation, at least 10 minutes. During that time, not a single person was near the grill. I went in and ordered a whopper meal with onion rings. The onion rings were fresh, by the time they cooked, the whopper burger (pulled out of drawer that I assume was a heatlamp cause it didn't go in when I was there) and fries were 15 minutes old. I asked the server for fresh ones. He said 'They are fresh' then glared at me. Guess I was interrupting his conversation. I asked again, and he said, 'I suppose we can make fresh ones'. His mates were doing what can only be described as 'giggling' about 4 foot behind him and his tone of voice said 'go away'. You know what...I don't need spittle in my burger and there was no way I was getting a fresh burger. I just paid and dumped it all in the trash a few feet in front of the cash desk. A god awful experience. Go to the McD nearby, they are much busier and have a better turnover of both staff and food. Can't imagine why...
