Trendy spot, not very big, with good German food, and mostly geared towards wine drinkers. The beer selection is very limited, as is the food menu, surprisingly no appetizer and just one dessert. But what we had was very good (cheese spätzle and pork in beer sauce with sauerkraut). A little more upscale than the traditional German pub in a simple but chic atmosphere. Good food , but very strange attitude to service . We ordered a bottle of wine which was delicious . Subsequently ordered a couple of glasses of the same wine as we enjoyed it so much . When it came it was very oxidized and clearly old . We sent it back but the waitress came and said it can't be old because we only opened it 5 days ago !!!!! When we asked them to open a new bottle ( they do sell it by the glass ) she said " Oh no we can't do that , it goes off too fast " In addition we waited 20 mins for dessert and even after the cutlery arrived they suddenly said that the kitchen had closed and we would not get our dessert . This was my favorite meal in Berlin. We went for the spatzle but I fell in love with this appetizer. It was the perfect balance of flavors. Unfortunately I don't remember what it was called. The staff wasn't the friendliest and the restaurant was super crowded but 10/10 would recommend just for that dish. read more

Walking through the entrance, Lebensmittel first appears to be a butcher with some groceries. Upon deeper look, it is a restaurant with wine, beers, and meats in cans along the walls near the entrance. The menu features very good German dishes. The rabbit was a bit dry but everything else was good. I recommend if you want German cuisine. read more

My sister-in-law suggested we have lunch here as it is her and my brother's favorite place to eat. I see why they love it and I cannot wait to go back to enjoy it again! We stopped in for lunch and ordered the wiener schnitzel and the pork roast. The staff was very helpful with the wine selection and even politely suggested my choice of beer from the cooler could be better with the food we ordered. I took their advice and upgraded my beer selection. We split the meals and both were terrific! The pork roast with the sauerkraut was very tender and tasty. The potato salad with cucumbers that came with the wiener schnitzel was very refreshing. Not a heavy mayonnaise based salad, but was very light and was perfect with the schnitzel. The ambiance is great. It was a bit after lunch time, so it was pretty empty. There are several large, welcoming communal tables as well as smaller tables in the back. The interior is welcoming and bright with some products available for sale along the walls. Since we did not have coffee and dessert, we will have to head back to Berlin soon to enjoy all that Lebensmittel in Mitte has to offer. Will be back for sure! read more

God, how can you be so presumptuous: Us: "Hi a table for 2 please" him: "I can count - fake smile - Is it for diner or to sleep?" My absolute favorite Lebensmittel. Excellent wine selection (I stocked my summer wines here) and the menu for lunch and dinner is fantastic homestyle cooking. The atmosphere can seem a little too show-off at times, epecially when the parents-who-do-lunch with baby carriages en-route arrive, but that attitude is balanced with a friendly and efficient staff. Be patient if they get busy as they've not quite worked out a system to provide faster service. Definitely worth a visit. read more

We started a late lunch on the patio with a cappuccino and an espresso to fend off my jet lag (I had just flown in to meet my husband, who has been here on business for the past 2 weeks) never has coffee tasted so wonderful! I had asked my husband to take me to the best place he had eaten in the area, and we walked 10 minutes in the heat from the radisson blu hotel here past dozens of other restaurants and cafés, it was far worth the walk. As we sat, a rain cloud appears out of nowhere and the staff rushes to get in inside. Great service overall and very friendly staff. We ate chicken w/melon a top salad and a salmon risotto plate to eat, followed by more coffee. So delicious, the meats both unique sauces that were subtle but very flavorful! My husband also described his incredible experience of the lamb, steak, meatloaf, house made sausage, and veal that he had tried and rated them all 5 stars. He was very excited about this place and I am glad he shared them with me on my first day in Berlin! read more

We really wanted to like Lebensmittel and include it our Berlin guide, but it just didn't quite hit the mark. The food was inventive variations on German classics, but too inventive and just a bit weird, it's still nice food, but for the price, very hard to justify. What helps is the cool environment and really nice service. But alas, we couldn't recommend it when there are so many other great places around (for cheaper). read more

we came here on fri night and loved it. it was a bit hard to find, especially in the dark rainy night, but it was well worth it. the room is rustic, and there are long communal tables. we got a salad, the schnitzel, and a roasted pork dish to share. the portions are GIGANTIC. the "small" schnitzel was about a foot wide! everything was delicious, and of course we got a dessert of some crepe thing w/ plum sauce and vanilla ice cream on the side. there are a ton of nice german rieslings to choose from, among other wines. read more

I wanted to give this restaurant 4.5 stars, and considering I ate there twice in one day, I figured I should round up, not down. But we had a couple of lowlights (dumplings, dessert) so I can't give it a perfect 5 stars. I had the roasted pork loin for lunch, which came on a bed of sauerkraut (red, sweet) and with a big dumpling. The dumpling was the low point as it was very dense (it's bread and other items rolled into a ball as opposed to other types of filled dumplings in the world). For dinner, a companion had the roast pork on my recommendation, and it came with two dumplings, and he only ate a bite of one. The other two of us had wild boar (served with spaetzle, root vegetables, currant sauce, and brussels sprouts), and we both cleaned our plates. The only dessert on offer was a huge pancake served with ice cream and stewed cherries that all 3 of us shared but still couldn't finish. Dinner with wine and beers came to about 35€/person before tip. Lunch was 12€ including a bottle of water. read more

The Schnitzel at Lebensmittel is really good! Whenever I have visitors and they want to try German food I take them here. It is a bit pricey by Berlin standards but the portions are huge. Neben einer tollen Weinauswahl, von der wir einige Gläser probiert haben, hörte und sah auch die Speisekarte sehr lecker aus. Wir haben uns dann aber für die große Wurst und Käseplatte mit Brezel und Brot entschieden, welche total überzeugt hat. Hmm, a three-star average due to one four-star actual review and who knows what from a bunch of lazy... dummies? competitors? We'll never know. Maybe Qype needs to change its ratings algorithm. Anyway... this place is fantastic. Subtly balanced flavors and interesting textures say, in an understated way, "Here's someone who really knows how to cook." The surroundings are so unpretentious that it's like eating at the house of a friend who is a rising star at some snooty restaurant. I love the fact that our waiter recommended a wine, said how fantastic it was, and then added in an offhand way, "Go ahead and try it. If you don't like it, I'll drink it myself." reasonable quality food, no craft beers so no good for me, terrible staff, getting the feel of racism. they write the menu on blackboard with handwriting, you try to understand the handwriting, you are not sure and you ask questions and get arrogant answers(eg1: is the shinitzel made of chinken or meat? answer is "chicken is a meat", eg2: is the grilled sausage, currywurst?(trying to understand if it is pig or veal or lamb sausage), answer is "sausage is currywust in german". additionally, we sat on a table just at the exit of the kitchen, where it was for 4 people and we were 4. i just sat on the kitchen exit chair. the waitress found me not small enough as she was not comfortably carrying the plates in and out of the kitchen. she asked me rudely to change seats with my kid to make her comfortable. then a question should be asked; why does this restaurant make that table available for 4 people. put only one chair and let the table be for 3 people!!! read more
