I had been hearing about this restaurant since I first started working in Terre Haute so I finally…read moredecided to try it. It was good. I am writing about a delivery, so I can't comment on the restaurant itself. I took a star off because they did not provide any utensils or napkins in the delivery bag which made for a delayed meal since I had to go searching for a fork. The garden salad was very good. So crisp and fresh. The tomatoes were yummy, and I liked the surprise of celery amoungst the greens. The greens were mixed and not just iceberg which elevated the salad quite a bit. I always say I judge an Italian restaurant by their sauce, and this one was ok. Very sweet. Not thick. It wanted for something. I ordered the half portion of angel hair pasta, and it was still a very generous amount. I added a meatball which tasted more like an Italian sausage in a ball with a bit of spice and a chewier consistency. I wasn't mad at it, but it wasn't the seasoned ground beef crumble I expected. All in all, the meal was good, just lacking in some of things I expected from a place everyone seemed to like about it. I would probably go back and maybe try some of the other dishes next time I am in Terre Haute, if only to see if maybe it was just that order.

I expect an up-charge but not $8.00 per plate for a dinner that costs $18.95. Apparently, you get charged for the pasta AND the sauce sub. I really wish we had known that before we ordered. The food was good, and our server was very kind and attentive. However, it will be a while before we return because we are a bit shocked. A near 50% up-charge seems pretty greedy to me.

This spot was jumping this Sunday afternoon. Definitely a popular choice with the locals, and…read morethat's always a good sign! The parking lot was full, but we were able to be sat right away. We were taken to a booth and the seats and table were wet from the quick wipe it had just been given. It wasn't just wet, there were also lots of crumbs that had been left behind. As I looked around, I noticed that the floors were littered with trash and food also. Straw wrappers, napkins and bits of food were present under each and every table. I understand that during a busy rush, the staff probably can't take the time to sweep, but even after the rush nobody bothered to address it. There was a gentleman bussing tables who stayed "on patrol", though. He circled the dining room at regular intervals and made sure that dishes were cleared in a timely manner. I see you, sir! We were greeted right away and our drink orders were taken. That young lady was very kind and upbeat, which was quite welcoming. When she returned with our beverages, she offered to take our orders, but we weren't ready. And just like that, she ditched us! J/K, but kind of for real. A different waitress appeared and took over from there. She was efficient and took good care of us, but in a way, she wasn't as warm. She was no-nonsense and straight to the point. Our food was decent. My husband had The Special, which is a basic breakfast plate (eggs, French toast and bacon), I had the turkey club with fries, and my in-laws both had phily steak sandwiches with fries. The food didn't come out super fast, but that gave us time to settle-in and not feel rushed. It was quite nice and a change from what my husband and I are accustomed to where we live. We had a leisurely meal and caught up with old friends who wandered in and out during our meal. That was another clear sign that this place is a local favorite.

I'm in Danville for business quite often, and whenever I ask people where I should be eating in the…read morearea, they always mentioned Gilbert Street Cafe. I'm really starting to understand the "midwest diner", a large restaurant that always seems to be busy, friendly wait staff and a menu that has every classic American option under the sun. The food is typically done well, and that's why everyone recommends Gilbert Street Cafe. I've come here on three separate occasions thus far and my experiences have been quite consistent. My first visit I got their fried chicken tenders, with their vegetable of the day and a side of hash browns. The breading on the tenders were pretty good, but the chicken itself was missing some seasoning. The vegetable of the day (which seems to always be the vegetable of the day whenever I visit) was mixed veggies. It probably was the stuff you buy frozen in the bag, that was just okay as well. The hash browns were fantastic though, I would highly recommend getting breakfast items, they seem to do those extremely well! My next visit I order the chopped steak and I was very impressed. This one had a lot of good flavor, wasn't too dry and, did I mention that the portions here are super big? That's the midwest diner for ya! On my most recent visit I got the country fried steak with mashed potatoes. This steak was also huge, maybe even larger than the size of my face. It came with this delicious white gravy that reminded me of the gravy put on biscuits and gravy here in the south. It was full of pepper, just the way I liked it. The potatoes on the other hand were a bit disappointing, it was almost like it was powdered mash. Not even the gravy could save it from the texture and flavor. If you're looking for a place to take the family, look no further than Gilbert Street Cafe. It is a community staple, and if you've been around long enough, you'll be sure to find someone you know there. It truly is part of the beating heart of Danville.

She quickly asked good questions and later came back excited to share that she and Dave felt like I should try chicken francese. Wow...excellent choice by both of them. (I don't like wine so chicken Marsala was not their suggestion because it has a bit of wine flavoring, but I have had it and it's very good also). All indications are the staff are very cohesive and have great synergy. My wife was very content with her chicken caroza. We went on a Wednesday evening and it was fairly quiet. The recent nice weather and outdoor athletics might have kept the crowd down a little bit. But usually the place is packed. And, for good reasons. It's a wonderful (hidden) gem for Brazil. The place is clean and comfortable. Decorations and music are cool. Before departing, Dave took a few minutes to compare notes with our culinary experiences. He was excited to promote all small family owned businesses, as are we, that have great reputations. Don't hesitate to get out of your franchise restaurant mode and go to Piloni's. They are supporting local business by being in business. 5+ stars for sure!!!!

The wild salmon was a big portion. I had it with risotto, but spaghetti marinara was a choice, too. I didn't want red sauce with salmon. The salmon was a bit dry. Risotto was flavorful and soft. The owner has a farm and uses a lot of the produce she grows herself for the freshest ingredients. The variety on the menu is fabulous as well. They always have exceptional daily specials. It's always so hard to decide what to order! The negative is that it is only open for dinners on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. They used to be open more than than as well as for lunch (they had a fantastic lunch menu!) so that's a disappointment. The place is also clean, but I would like to see them replace their tables and chairs. The chairs are old and you sink down so low. The tables don't have a smooth surface and crumb debris gets caught. This is the only authentic, quality Italian place in town so I hope it sticks around for a long time! With her decreasing the hours from what she had before, I worry she'll eventually close. It would be a huge loss to the community if it did.
