I had unexpectedly stumbled upon this restaurant while looking for a place to have dinner. I chose the location because it was directly across from the beautiful water features. Much to my pleasant surprise, Le Sud is a restaurant that is part of the Paul Bocuse collection. I had dined at the Michelin star Paul Bocuse the evening prior, so I knew I would be in for quite the treat! I ordered the saumon marine a l'aneth (smoked salmon) for my appetizer and the dos de cabillard roti (pan seared sea bass over a smashed potato cake with herbs). The sea bass was beautifully cooked with a crispy skin. The potatoes were tasty, but I found the herb mixture to be a bit greasy, a bit too much olive oil for my preference. Was just in Lyon on business and our local colleagues took us here for dinner. We had an excellent time that took nearly 3 hours (not because of the service but because we were just taking our time). It definitely feels like an upscale place from decor to menu to prices. The service was good and attentive. We had some great wine and starters. The lamb I had for a main course was also quite good. I capped it off with a really tasty crème brulet. All in all, it was a really nice experience. My first visit ever to a Paul Bocuse restaurant was to the popular Le Sud brasserie, which specializes in dishes from southern Europe (along the Mediterranean). This sunny, modern restaurant located right on the Place Bellecour had friendly (albeit slow) service, and though the prices were higher than your average brasserie, the quality of food was right on point! For lunch, I couldn't pass up the chance to try one of their specialties--the Bresse chicken tagine with couscous in a lobster broth! The Bresse chicken is a special French product that can only be produced from a certain breed of chicken from a certain region of France (AOC status), and the moist thigh/drumstick had a slightly gamey flavor. The couscous was spiced so nicely and contained onions, raisins, pine nuts, and almonds as well, and the lobster broth added a deep unctuous flavor. I also tried one of the daily specials, the fillet of sea bream cooked in olive oil, served over Amandine potatoes. The fish had a crispy skin and was cooked perfectly, the potatoes were fall-apart tender, though not the least bit mushy, and the savory, creamy lobster sauce was simply divine! Ok so we had reservations and sat down, it took a very long time for us to even get water but we were not in a rush, no one spoke English, so it was difficult, we had some help from other tables, but the real problem was when a major rain storm came down and the roof above us started leaking on some of us,we had to use a drinking cup to catch the drips that were right in front of one of the ladies and a bucket and napkins on the other side, all the while they never moved us , when the food came out the waiter went to move the cup that has water dripping into it and put her food there until she said look up and then he was surprised and slid the food over, after we were done eating, mind you no one came over once to ask us how things were if you need anything or would you like to move, the lady next to us who was from the area that spoke English chewed out the wait staff for treating us the way they did, and not moving us, and she apologized to us for the way her people treated us even though she had nothing to do with the restaurant, she was apologizing for her country, and then, after that, they put four glasses of champagne to the table. They did not say a word just dropped them there, so we were the only Americans in the place and everybody came and went, and we were still there so we believe we were treated inferior. Le Sud is by the Rhône river and next to the legendary good restaurant street (Rue des Marronniers according to my French friend). It is one of the brasseries owned by the Michelin three-starred chef Paul Bocuse so friend and I were very excited to try here. We decided to go with the menu of the day and sampled most items there. The duck appetizer and the salmon tartare were both very good. Duck is a bit salter for my taste, but it reminds of my hometown dish Nanjing salted duck, so I was happy. We were also very impressed with the cut size of the salmon tartare. Mains were the best part. The lamb leg and the fish fillet with risotto were excellent! The lamb was cooked to the perfect tenderness, which was never achieved in our kitchen! Desserts were only ok. I am not a fan of alcohol so the rum bara was too much for me. The fig tart is too bland and could be better for sure. We had the Saturday dinner so it was extremely busy. They do have an English menu and our server was very good at English. A nice dinner at the bank of the Rhône River. The restaurant was semi-underground and the service was impeccable. My waiter spoke limited English but it didn't affect my dining experience. I chose the menu of the day, with salmon tartare as my starter, roasted pork as main course and rum baba as dessert. The food was served quickly. The pain maison chips in the starter was delicious. The main course was a bit salty, but the pork was very juicy and the potatoes were fried right on point: creamy inside with crispy skin. They were also really generous with rum in their rum baba. On the recommendation of our cruise director, we saved our last night in Lyon to dine at Le Sud. We called on very short notice and were able to get a reservation for the first seating at 7:30. We loved our meals and the staff was friendly and helpful. Our dinners of the chicken and the fish were excellent in every and did not disappoint. Go. To. This. Place. This was our first meal in France and we were not disappointed. We had a late check in to our hotel, so we were forced to arrive for our reservation with huge rolling bags in toe. The staff were nice enough to put our bags in the back for us so that we could enjoy our meal uncluttered. We chose to do the fixed lunch at 23,70€ each, which was a steal for this meal. I started with a vegetable ragout type dish topped with jambon, had the beef bourguignon and finished with an assortment of gelato. The food was delightful and thoughtful. My sister had a white fish which had perfectly crisped skin. Also at the table was the beef tartare, which had a citrus type flavor. Only thing that I would have changed about that would be to serve the tartare with a bread rather than frites. Our server was very patient with us and our limited French and did his best to translate some things on the menu and help us make our decisions. The very fluent manager visited our table on multiple occasions to translate and make sure that all was well. Last thing to note is how incredibly helpful the staff was overall. One member of our party had lost her cell phone on our train from Switzerland right before this meal. We had to send half of our party to check into our hotel and the other half back to the train station to retrieve the cell phone. The manager was very helpful in calling a cab for the train station folks, explaining to the driver exactly where they needed to go as they did not have a cell phone to navigate. Our first restaurant in Lyon and it did not disappoint! For approximately 27 euros, you can get a delicious three-course meal from the Paul Bocuse empire of restaurants. We made a reservation a month before we arrived in Lyon, and it's a good thing because it was packed full on a Monday night! There is outdoor seating plus indoor patio seating with glass windows, allowing for maximum light into the restaurant. Beautiful view of the plaza and perfect for people watching! We appreciated that there was an english menu, making ordering simple for us Americans! Here's what my three-course meal came with: 1. Starter: Cod Brandade over red pepper/onions + crostini with black olive + green salad. I loved the mix of the cod with the black olive tapenade, and it was a hefty portion. I wished I ate less of it so that I could save room for my next dish! 2. Main: Stewed Cheek of Pork with Honey and Spices over Semolina grains - the pork was fall off the bone tender and drowning in the delicious sauce. Comes out piping hot! 3. Dessert: I couldn't decide, so I got both the Fig Tart and Half Saint-Marcellin cheese. The cheese was flavorful, strong, and perfect to sop up with the crusty bread. The Fig Tart was fresh and came out with a buttery whipped cream. Yum! It was a lot of food! My husband ordered the Chicken Pastilla a la carte and he was very happy. Recommended by the concierge of the hotel that this is one of those Bouchon places - causal, local, great food. We already have a reservation for the much anticipated Michelin 2 star La Mere Brazier Viannay for lunch, so we were excited to have a casual night out. The highlight was the Marseille style fish soup - with intense flavors of fish broth reduction and a great consistency, the soup was served with parmesan cheese & mayonnaise. What a great combo. My mom and I had a really beautiful lunch here. First of all, the staff were so incredibly friendly. We were greeted by basically everyone (we could tell we weren't in Paris anymore...). My mom chose the set menu with an aubergine starter and the fish with risotto. I had a salad starter with risotto and asparagus. We shared a carafe of rose as well. The starters were good- the salad had more on it than I expected, with a few different veggies. The aubergine was huge and the two of us couldn't finish it as we needed to save room for our mains. My mom enjoyed her fish (although we weren't exactly sure what it was), and my risotto was delish. The portions were huge as well...I just managed to finish mine. We also ate at Le Nord during our trip to Lyon, but I much preferred Le Sud. The ambiance (closer to the water), service and food were all better. If you are choosing between the Paul Bocuse restaurants I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Le Sud over Le Nord (although we didn't manage to get to all four corners of the compass, so can't comment on the other two). read more

I've been to nearby other smaller restaurants and I had much better bread, other dishes and dessert than here at lower or similar price tag. Service was ok and the quantity of each dish was good. This was my third time at Le Sud and it never disappoints us! It's my favorite place to go to our last night in Lyon and sit in the veranda. Our server Carré made it such a good experience and we absolutely loved the wine, entrees/starters, main plates, and desserts! Carré had great recommendations and went above and beyond for our friend who was gluten free to bring him freshly baked gluten free bread and ensure his fish plate was gluten free. My partner always loves the fish and seafood, and they have great vegetarian options as well, I loved the pasta. Take the Saint Joseph wine and Valrhona chocolate cake! read more

For my appetizer, I had a salad nicose which was super fresh but felt more like an entree than an appetizer. My entree was chicken stuffed w/ prosciutto on a bed of risotto...good but a bit on the salty side and also hard to finish given size of the appetizer. Super happy with my meal though! My husband ordered from the prixe fixe menu which included a terrine and lamp chops. We weren't overly impressed with the service. Apparently our waiter thought we were done with service and did not want dessert which was included in my husband's prixe fixe menu. Basically we sat around for about 10 minutes and when the waiter brought our check we said what about dessert. He said you guys told me no dessert (now, I don't like dessert but i def do not recall telling him that)....we said no, we wanted the dessert. Overall, things were good but I was not too impressed. I ordered the parma ham with melons for starter then linguine with prawns for main. The melons were quite succulent, but the ham and rocket salad were average -- I've definitely had better. My linguine was alright but once again, the sauce wasn't flavourful enough for my taste. Plus, some of the prawns felt undercooked. Ambience was alright, though it was a bit confusing whether they are going for classy or casual. I wish the place had more of an identity. Service was sub average. Granted, I think they are understaffed but even at that, the waiters were cocky and unfriendly. I wouldn't recommend it, to be honest. There are better in Lyon. read more

I've eaten at Le Sud twice now and both times were very good. The first time I ate there, I remember the food being good, but not memorable - in fact, I don't remember what I ate. This past time, however, I had the Moroccan Chicken dish which was really delicious and super interesting. The atmosphere at this restaurant is only ok and the service can be ... aloof. But perks are that they have an English menu and are open on Sunday. Plus, the location is really nice - just near the Place Bellcour. If you're willing to take a bit of a trip, however, I prefer Le O'est. read more

It was a disappointing. visit . We had the hotel make a reservation for 19:30. They only have 2 seating , the next one would be 21:30. The service was very slow and they mostly got it wrong .I ordered a Chateauneuf du Pape and they brought a rose , so they had to take that one back. We ordered 2 fish soups which were fine , but it took more than 30 minutes to arrive .My companion was not feeling well,so that is all he ate. I had the cod with a cream/wine sauce including carrots and celery. It tasted very good. But I needed a spoon and it was difficult to flag down a waiter. They never made eye contact much. I finally got one and asked for a spoon. Mind you, I do speak some French . But the spoon never came until the very end when I did not need or want it anymore. Earlier I asked the manager for a second glass of the red. Later on when the bill came I saw that it was a different kind,cheaper. It was good, but just another example of how careless they are with customer service. It all seemed very robotic/factory like . Facing the heart of Bellecour, "le Sud" offers special dishes that come from the South of France. Many fish dishes, many rich sauces- we came here on 14 Juillet in an attempt to have a special night. From the start it felt way too large and way to crowded to really enjoy the meal- the sheer number of tables and waiters shuffling around made it feel like they were trying to squish as many customers as possible to make a turnover. The menu for the night was not impressive as we had hoped, three entrées were offered: salade aux marché, saumon fumé avec crostinis. The main dishes were: Tagine, Filet de Dourade and carpaccio de boeuf. For 22 € per person we ate a cuisine that was mediocre. The salade was fresh but not exciting; the tagine was good, but missed salt, the filet was the best part- but it was a very small fish on a very small serving of vegetables. The carpaccio was decent, but the frites that came with were soggy and under-cooked. The best part was the dessert: Rhum Baba. I probably could have just eaten that all night. It was nice for a one time visit, but this Bocuse "Sud" was not quite on the mark with superiority. read more

This place employees a team of children who look and act as if they all started their first job waiting tables a few days ago. Beautiful, tasty food at a somewhat decent price. We all started with a delicious pumpkin soup starter. As for mains, my friend and I went for the Iberian pig (tender cut of pork with potatoes and a sort of salsa type sauce) while my girlfriend went with a tasty fish dish that I can't remember right now. I will definitely be coming back here next time I'm in Lyon as well as trying the other restaurants (Le Nord, L'Est, L'Ouest, Fond Rose and Marguerite) operated by Paul Bocuse and Jean Fleury. I was excited to finally eat at a restaurant owned by Paul Bocuse! It was an overpriced disaster. My entree, a Caesar salad, was a small bowl of lettuce with no dressing and a tasteless white substance that was supposed to be Parmesan cheese. Had this joke of a salad not been included in my menu order, it would have cost 12€! McDonalds serves a better salad. My plat was tasteless, undercooked cod. Yes the citron sauce around it was yellow but like everything else, it had absolutely no flavor. By comparison, my companion's mixed seafood platter was over cooked. You could chew the salmon on it like beef jerky. Both dishes included risotto that had been cooked into mush. My companion's dish included 2 peeled, but barely cooked potatoes which were quite hard. The service was quick and absolutely void of any conversation or rapport. Based on this expensive experience I would not recommend this restaurant or any other restaurants owned by Paul Bocuse. read more

Came here for dinner on july 22, 2015 because of the Paul Bocuse name. The setting is nice but the meals for 4 of us were no better than at any other brasserie or bouchon in town. For example, I ordered the lamb shank which arrived on a plate that was piled high with a very ordinary, unappetizing coucous (presumably to fill up the plate), alongside a non descript, over cooked lamb shank. It was OK, but boring. The prices were reasonable. The service was "hurried"..perhaps they were understaffed. If you are here for only a few days, you will find dozens of better alternatives and pay a bit less, especially across the river in the "old town". read more

A Daniel Bocuse restaurant in the heart of the "peninsula" -- Place Bellecour -- this brasserie serves what you'd expect of a fancy pants Lyon restaurant. Being that Lyon is the heart of southern French gastronomy, and that Brasserie le Sud was recommended by locals who were dining with us, I had high hopes for this place. Many of my companions enjoyed the three-course meal of the day, which that night included the most wonderful tomato and feta dish -- out of this world. Another ordered the sea bass, which was cooked to perfection and presented whole for tableside carving. Menus in both French and English were available, which was helpful for those of us who were visiting from abroad. But the shrimp risotto lacked flavor and the server took advantage of the fact that the English speakers arrived first by serving the table Evian, which (while served deliciously cold, unlike French table water) jacked up the price of the meal by several euro per bottle. Still, the meal was fantastic, and wandering the nearby gardens after our meal helped les Americains enjoy the local scenery! read more
