A piece of leather also known as a veal Milanese with microwaved pasta.

Please do not trust the reviews on google or yelp for this restaurant. It is living off of past glories and sits nearly as empty as a tomb. The service is delayed and not in a good way. It took us an hour and a half to get our food and what a disappointment that was. The food was at best mediocre and at worst disgusting. Ernest Hemingway would have backhanded the chef if he had brought him stale fries, cold bread, frozen butter, a blonde ale that tastes worse than Heineken, undercooked steak and a vela Milanese that would have better served humanity being used as a mop. The restaurant's decor was nice and one could say that it used to be a glorious place to come and eat. Today it sits much like the Rome of the dark ages sat, devoid of its former population and sitting empty while surrounded by the art and decor of bygone glory days. It is better to look at this place and continue walking or only drinking a bit of wine rather than sitting down and eating here. You have been warned.

This place is exactly what you would expect if you watched any YouTube videos. Service and atmosphere were amazing and food was of high quality. We arrived at 6:30 on a Tuesday and the place was about empty. By 8:00 there was a very long line to get in. Definitely worth a visit.

Classics can sometimes disappoint, but this place lives up to the hype! The place dates back to the 19th century, and I was told about it by friends of my parents' generation. They raved about the beautiful Art Nouveau decor and the food, and this is back in the 1960s. It hasn't changed, it is still wonderful. A friend recommended the French onion soup that came with a Madeira and egg sauce. He said it was the best French onion soup he ever had. I have to agree with him. I also had the rump steak with black pepper sauce. The meat was tender, and the sauce complemented the meat without overpowering it. They are known for their beer, and the blonde draft that I had was really refreshing. They had some amazing looking desserts, but I enjoyed fresh strawberries with a delicious homemade whipped cream. The place is massive and it was full. Mostly local folks, or at least French people, and a smattering of tourists. The waitstaff was nearly overwhelmed, but they were professional unpleasant. Such a beautiful place and a wonderful experience.

This was the weirdest experience and probably quite unusual. But for us, it was not great. We were able to walk in without a reservation, which was "great". It's the biggest restaurant I've ever seen. More like a fancy banquet hall that I counted about 400-500 seats. Insane. The waiter clearly was not happy that night, or waiting on us. I started to say I had food allergies and he didn't even let me finish my sentance, he ran to get the book that has all the allergens listed. It's great that restaurants have this now, but I also find a lot inaccurate. And many dishes adaptable if you just ask. There's a crazy meat slicer right by the hostess stand, where we were seated. So we watched a dozen staff slicing the parma ham. So of course, we got that fairly quickly. However, it seems our waiter decided to abandon us entirely. We probably ordered about 15-20 minutes after arriving. Then after 90 minutes, I had to flag down the hostess and say we still hadn't gotten our appetizers. So another waiter suddenly took over and we got our apps. Then, they started to bring us the tableside beef tartare...which we hadn't ordered. So then they had to double check what we DID order. And honestly, I didn't care for it after all that wait. In fact, we weren't hungry by then, because it was 2 1/2 hours after entering the restaurant. We saw everyone else getting their food quickly. So I know this was unique to us. Also, it's a place where everyone seems to have a birthday. They have a strange crank music box type thing, next to the meat slicer, and they dim the lights, crank out happy birthday, everyone applauds, and they go about their business. We heard this between 5-10 times over 2 1/2 hours. It's quite the place. But I don't recommend it. And the sliced ham is not worth it. And will fill you up before getting your meal. IF you ever get it.

We were amazing in how large this restaurant is. What we ordered was tasty but would love to try other items. We enjoy their bread.

Still wanted to give this place a try despite several negative reviews about wait, service, and food. Arrived after 9pm and had no wait line. Our waiter was very nice, even though we had a language barrier. The beer is not the best, but it's fairly priced along with other drinks. I got the Royale, hija got the steak frites, wife got Pike Quenelles, and the French onion soup. Interior is gorgeous art deco. The wait for food was fair. All dishes arrived together hot. I was expecting harsh food critics at my table, but everyone enjoyed the Royale meats with mustard and sauerkraut. Steak frites was solid and cooked perfectly, nothing left on the plate. Pike is a giant fish cake my wife enjoyed, but not for me. As others have said, French onion soup has strong Madeira wine after taste, even though waiter put only half of wine in the bowl. Nice cheesy top, but very bready underneath and broth not rich in taste. We topped off with chocolate covered mousse and fruit pavlova. I loved the mousse but the pavlova was pretty good too. I would not be discouraged by the negative reviews. Try to get here by 7 before the wait line or after 9pm.

This place is a icon and a must go if you're in Lyon. The food was amazing, the service was great and the restaurant is a fun place to have a good time!!!

Was disappointed by the most famous and visited brasserie in Lyon. Service was extremely slow, we waited at least twenty minutes just to try to get a waiter's attention. We shared a french onion soup, steak tarte, pistachio sausage, and frozen nougat. The french onion soup was one of the worst I had - extremely strange and was alcholic. Lacked flavor and cheese. Bread was also too stale. The steak tarte was nothing special, and the pistachio sausage barely had any pistachio flavoring. The presentation was also quite poor and the service lacked any enthusiasm.

First time at this restaurant after too many recommendations the steak was too chewy not tender at all and the beer was not cold I won't come here anymore

A great experience you could have in such a gastronomical city. It is basically one large room with lots of jovial conversation and smells of good food. We joined a friend's brother's group who helped guide us around the menu and offered their opinions of what to get. We got the andouillette and escargot to share. Service is extremely slow paced so I'd knock a star for that. The andouillette came with some amazing seasoned potatoes, probably my favorite rendition of potatoes so far in my life! They also have a good selection of digestifs to soak up the rich food you just ate. There is a photo booth by the bathrooms if you want a souvenir for just a few Euros. If you stay long enough, there might be a birthday. They dim the lights a few times and everyone (I mean EVERYONE) claps!

This is one of the must-eat places in Lyon. It's the oldest brasserie in the city and one of the largest in Europe. They are known for serving typical dishes from Lyon but also for they sauerkraut. I've been eating here for years and I have never been disappointed with the many dishes I have tried. Great service and lovely interior with a typical brasserie ambiance. And like that they are open from 11:30am to 11pm non stop.

This restaurant got rave reviews and my daughter had to come here since she wanted to experience a classic brasserie that felt like stepping back into time -1920's Art Deco. When we first arrived at the restaurant, we were really impressed with the classic style. We came around 2 pm for a late lunch and the restaurant was open and serving, but it had a limited menu. When we asked questions about the 4 different types of beers they had, they said they only serve one at the table and the others you have to get at the bar. So the bar was 13 feet away from us and no where on the menu did it say that in French or English. When they gave us the menu and we began to order, mostly everything we asked to order was not available. The food we did order was good. Our waiter was so friendly, but the maître d' could use a lesson on treating guests. Felt very uncomfortable and couldn't wait to leave. Not a good feeling for a dining experience. If you decide to eat here, come for dinner since that seems like when most reviewers had a good time.

The food and service are excellent but the wait is a bit long. Part of French culture, one cannot finished the meal until after 2+ hours.

Chez Georges was the perfect compromise. Located inside the food hall, we visited this restaurant in the mid-afternoon. Since people in France like to dine very late, we opted to sit at the bar. The man working was curt (as is the French way) but he was kind enough (if not warm nor welcoming) and pretended to understand my butchered attempts at his language. I'm fairly certain he spoke perfect English but he still pretended not to. We asked him his favorite local wine on the menu and he pointed to one red and one white. We ordered both. He got happy (well, as happy as one from France can ever let on) when we ordered the escargots. He then changed which wine he thought would go best with our garlic snails. The food arrived quickly and the snails were fresh and tasty. Big, meaty, chewy, and served in the traditional way: inside their shells atop a rounded dish. These were good but not great. Hubby said he'd had better escargots in his life. We were close to being the only tourists in the market in the afternoon, and we certainly were the only ones dining. The other patrons at the bar stared us down the entire time, like we were a novelty act from America.

We came on a Saturday at noon, and it was absolutely packed. Luckily, there were a couple of tables open in the upstairs area. The servers are fluent in English and are quite friendly. We ordered the oyster shucker's platter, burgundy snails, and squid a la plancha tapas with scallops added. The oyster shucker's platter is a great way to try all the different kinds of seafood, consisting of oysters, prawns, whelks, and shrimp. The oysters were super fresh and plump - tasted like sea water but in the best way possible, melting in your mouth. The prawns were plump and fresh, and the shrimps were crunchy and umami. The whelks were somewhat hard to get out of their shells, but they were very chewy and satisfying. The escargot came out hot and warm, with the parsley sauce soaking into the tender snail meat. The squid was chewy yet tender, and the scallops were super soft and tender. The slight char on each piece gave a smoky, woody flavor that was wonderful. Can definitely see why people order platters and platters of this fresh seafood!

Lots of suits and well dressed people (dresses, jackets and slacks, etc). We had come after the Women's World Cup so was a tad under dressed, but they were polite and kind and said it was ok to dine there. PLAT: A few got the salad lyonnaise. The lardons are huge, it's a meal in and of itself. The croutons are crispy and butter nuggets of delicious carb. The poached egg is done to perfection. The lettuce is frisse so it delicate. They have a plat and entree size, and the plat was generous (it was a deep bowl!) The burrata came with ratatouille, which was also generous in portion. It's very rich, oh so creamy and cool and tasty. The ratatouille had a nice deep rich tomato base and the vegetables (in cubes vs circular slices) had a nice structure to hold up well to the creamy cheese. Also shareable. Last plat was the foie grais pate. That crust is so buttery, flakey and delicious. The pate was equally good. It came with cornichons and salad on the side. This was sharable too, but I didn't ;) ENTREE: The star entree was the poulet (chicken) stew. It's 100% comfort food that you can't stop eating until everything is gone. In addition to chicken, there were carrots and potatoes. The beef tartare was wonderful, rich, robust, little bit of heat (I think tabasco?). It was also a generous amount. It came with sliced potatoes. The steak and potatoes came with a rich, brown sauce to drizzle over the steak. So, so, so good. Between the chicken stew sauce/gravy and the brown sauce, there were so many delicious flavors around. Last entree was the sweetbreads, so tender, perfectly prepared, very delicate. MUST SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT. If you are a chocolate lover, the chocolate financier (cake) was so rich (think ganache) but not overly sweet. Chocolate lovers will be transported. As it was during a blistering heatwave through parts of Europe, I went with the meringue. Light, airy, crispy with the sweetest strawberries and raspberries. I'm not the biggest fans of raspberries but these seem to have sugar filled in the center (it didn't, but that sweetness was so perfect). then there is the marshmellow/praline/ice cream dish, which I have no clue what the name is. We saw it coming out of the kitchen and knew we had to have it. GET IT, again, this is if you want something other than chocolate. If you love chocolate and can enjoy a rich dessert after a spectacular meal, the chocolate cake is out of this world. the one thing is that the menu only has the plat/entree. For drinks/dessert, the waiter reads it off to you from memory. The challenge with this is you don't know the prices until the bill comes.
