Chez Georges was the perfect compromise. Located inside the food hall, we visited this restaurant in the mid-afternoon. Since people in France like to dine very late, we opted to sit at the bar. The man working was curt (as is the French way) but he was kind enough (if not warm nor welcoming) and pretended to understand my butchered attempts at his language. I'm fairly certain he spoke perfect English but he still pretended not to. We asked him his favorite local wine on the menu and he pointed to one red and one white. We ordered both. He got happy (well, as happy as one from France can ever let on) when we ordered the escargots. He then changed which wine he thought would go best with our garlic snails. The food arrived quickly and the snails were fresh and tasty. Big, meaty, chewy, and served in the traditional way: inside their shells atop a rounded dish. These were good but not great. Hubby said he'd had better escargots in his life. We were close to being the only tourists in the market in the afternoon, and we certainly were the only ones dining. The other patrons at the bar stared us down the entire time, like we were a novelty act from America.

Rue de Laurencin houses a cluster of the Thomas restaurants which are one next to the other or across the street and when you choose to go to one you can sometimes choose items from them all. Our waitperson was so sweet and helpful- she would literally run to the other kitchens to request items for us. Delicious champagne from "Thomas" across the street paired perfectly with our three starters from the cold menu: octopus salad, marinated shrimp (crevettes) and the anchovies. All three were wonderful Our fabulous pluma patra negra (a grilled steak that tasted as if slightly dredged in flour) and our grilled octopus also came from Thomas which is the most upscale of the restaurants. They were both outstanding. The star was a plate of delectable razor clams (couteaux gratiné) which were grilled and served in their shells with delicious herbs and oil. They were phenomenal and we could have eaten four plates of them. We greedily mopped up the leftover sauce from the shells with bread. We finished the meal with a pain perdu that tasted slightly of apples and was wonderful- hot and a slight chew in places. We fought for the last bites. All in all a magical meal in Lyon- I'll yearn for a return soon.

We came on a Saturday at noon, and it was absolutely packed. Luckily, there were a couple of tables open in the upstairs area. The servers are fluent in English and are quite friendly. We ordered the oyster shucker's platter, burgundy snails, and squid a la plancha tapas with scallops added. The oyster shucker's platter is a great way to try all the different kinds of seafood, consisting of oysters, prawns, whelks, and shrimp. The oysters were super fresh and plump - tasted like sea water but in the best way possible, melting in your mouth. The prawns were plump and fresh, and the shrimps were crunchy and umami. The whelks were somewhat hard to get out of their shells, but they were very chewy and satisfying. The escargot came out hot and warm, with the parsley sauce soaking into the tender snail meat. The squid was chewy yet tender, and the scallops were super soft and tender. The slight char on each piece gave a smoky, woody flavor that was wonderful. Can definitely see why people order platters and platters of this fresh seafood!

They also grow their own apples. They serve bio wine and cider here, as well. The food was fresh and delicious. We loved the jam, cheese and egg crepe and the fig jam, walnut and cheese amuse crepe. So good! The side salad paired perfectly with the crepes. It was light and fresh. Loved the outdoor patio seating. You even get a view of Notre Dame. Service was friendly. Our favorite spot in Lyon.
