What a pleasant surprise as we stumbled upon this wonderful little restaurant. It's location is in a strip mall that requires attention but don't let that scare you away. On entering the first thing that came to mind was charming with blue & white nautical theme. This is truly a family business with the husband serving and the wife cooking. He is a great character with great sense of humor. We only had the fish & chips plus a side of onion rings which all were fantastic. The fish was in a delicious batter that coated nicely but wasn't buried if you know what I mean. Pricing was reasonable at $20 for 1 piece plus fries , coleslaw & tartar sauce. We had a long drive back to Toronto and wanted comfort food and holy smokes did this place hit the spot!! First of all, the lady at the counter was lovely and patiently described everything they had to offer (all freshly made to add!). We of course opted for two fish and chips and it was one of the best ones we've ever had. The batter was crispy and not too thick, fish was fresh and the chips were golden brown and soft on the inside. The tarter sauce and coleslaw was an add on and I'm so glad I did! There's a cafe in the same location servicing some pretty good freshly ground beans so definitely stop by if you're in the area. read more

The fish and chips is so good, it's where we had our wedding reception meal! We went back again today for a lovely lunch with my mother in law, and all 5 of us ordered fish and chips. Fresh, crispy, served in "newspaper", with malt vinegar available on the table. Everything about it is fabulous! As a transplanted Newfoundlander, I promise you, this is worth the drive. This familiar Chelsea spot has been redecorated by the new owners in a bright seaside style - ocean blues and white with newspaper print tablecloths. We went for lunch after skiing at Camp Fortune and found the fish and chips excellent. The batter was light and crisp, the fish (fresh cod) was perfectly cooked and their fries are the real thing. A very good homemade dressing and crisp lean bacon made the Caesar salad a great accompanying dish. read more

A hidden gem away from the hustle of the more busy part of Old Chelsea. Located in a small mall a few kilometres away from the visitors' centre for Gatineau Park, le Resto serves fresh, well made seafood dishes. The fish and chips is perfect as many others have mentioned. I have had it many times and it never fails to impress. The grilled squid in Portuguese sauce is my other favourite. The tomato based chickpea sauce goes really well with the squid. Add a side order of fresh bun to soak up the sauce. This visit, I tried the merguez sausage penne and it was really good. I have bought their merguez when the Smokehouse was open and it is always fresh and tender. This dish had a lot of sausages and yellow beans and grilled red peppers in a tomato based sauce. On other visits, I have had their desserts all of which were very tasty. They also have a counter where one can buy some smoked seafood (selection varies). read more

Tucked into a small mall (The Chelsea Plaza). A modest little place with great fare made up at the Boucanerie smoke house up the road. The Fish and Chips may be the best in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. We also had wonderful soup ( Beet and Apple). Well worth searching out for breakfast, lunch or dinner. read more

The Chelsea Smokehouse has two parts to its business, "Le Resto" which is the bistro located at 528 Route 105 and the Chelsea Smokehouse which sells smoked fish and other specialty items, located about two minutes down the road. Chelsea is about 30 minutes outside of downtown Ottawa, near Le Nordic Spa. For appetizers, we had the Seafood Chowder, Bison Spring Rolls and the Ceasar Salad topped with smoked and jerked salmon. All three dishes were very tasty but the seafood chowder was the biggest hit. For the main, we shared the fish and chips, served with mushy mint peas and tartar sauce. It was excellent, and I'm picky about fish and chips, especially tartar sauce. Le Resto has a nice selection of Quebec micro brew. Their wine list is limited but well chosen to pair with their food. I tried a glass of Pinot Gris (from France) and it was fantastic on its own and with our food selections. Unfortunately, Le Resto does not allow you to bring your own wine. The decor is cute and casual. There are some beautiful pieces of art to admire while you eat. The service was friendly and efficient. Our waiter was fluent in French and English. Our tab came to $66 (taxes in) which represents great value in my opinion. Be sure to check out the Smokehouse down the road. They carry most items served in the restaurant along with a number of specialty items (including from Bryson Farms). A great little escape from the hustle and bustle of Ottawa without having to travel too far. We'll be back. read more

First vist and not disappointed. Tucked away in Chelsea QC is this nice little spot with great seafood at reasonable prices. Upon arrival, we were greeted heartily by someone with a clear passion for food. We ordered the seafood chowder, the scallops with prickly pear cactus & nectarine chutney, and the extravagant Thai salad with lobster & Matane shrimp topped with crab cake. Delicious! All of it! Highly recommend! Next time I will aim to try their fish and chips. :) Yum! read more

Great little restaurant. Came here based on a friend's recommendation on their fish & chips. IMO it does have one of the best fish & chips around. Batter is light and crispy, and the fish was fresh, flaky, and full of flavor. Highly recommended. The clam chowder is also amazing. Tried the scrambled eggs and lobsters and it is also quite nice. Eggs is runny and lobster was tender. Will definite come back for the fish and chips. read more

A very unassuming place located in a tiny strip mall. Walking in you see nice freshly painted decor sort of diner style with very nice artwork on the walls. Having seen the online menu my friend and I went for the fish and chips and the duck confit sandwich. This didn't go well. Asking for a Pepsi, we were told we have Coke only, which is fine but then the waitress came back and told us they were out of Coke. Sprite will do.....Then we tried to order the Duck Comfit sandwich....this was a one-time thing on the menu and they don't do it anymore. How about updating the website menu? My friend settled on the Lobster Pourine' that sounds very decadent we thought and I ordered the fish and chips and mushy peas. The food arrived and the batter on the fish was amazing, hot, crispy, fresh and not oily or greasy at all. The chips were crunchy on the outside and soft and tender inside. Perfect. Now the lobster poutine......oh dear. A sad mess of a dish, tasteless lobster, a nasty insipid bisque which was used as the gravy and I think goat cheese. Not good at all and for $18 it should be. Anyway, don't order anything else, just go for the fish and chips (avoid the mushy peas...not sure what they were but they weren't mushy peas..they would be better on a lamb chop) and you will not be disappointed. read more

Good, not great. We came here as it was recommended both by friends who are local and because of the good reviews on Yelp. We shared two dishes, which was not a problem and we were not charged for sharing. We had a bowl of their fish chowder which was excellent, if a bit pricey: $9 for a bowl of soup! Come on! At least throw in some bread at that price! $1 for the bread... Seriously!?! We also shared a regular size fish'n chips ($15, really not bad for the portion size) the fish was very very good, the batter was crispy and not overpowering, the tartar sauce was great. The fries were a bit disappointing, tasting like frozen really.... At least they had malt vinegar!! And they served it with mushy peas which were strange... cold, which I have to assume they were meant to be, because they weren't just cool, they were cold, and they were seasoned with mint.... Now I love peas, even mushy, and I love mint, but the two together? Not so much. We also had two nice microbrewery beers with which we were not familiar, but that made it feel more like we were in "jolly old"! Waiting staff was excellent. I see someone wasn't happy with the mushy peas served at this bistro. They said it should have been served on lamb! .... Well, the fact the mushy peas have some mint in them is a plus, as far as I'm concerned. Too bad that earlier reviewer had a not-so-memorable experience. Let me tell you about what I've seen and tasted at that restaurant -- based on about six visits, mostly evenings. The fish is always fresh and well prepared. The chowder has been great every time I've had it. The choice of dishes is wonderful considering this is a pretty small and intimate operation. The service is excellent -- attentive and friendly, without being in your face. The selection of wines and beer is great, with lots of great Quebec beers on the list. (And lots of parking -- something that's often hard to find when you drive to downtown Ottawa for an evening out.) I've been to fish/seafood restaurants around the world and Le Resto Fish and Chips in Chelsea stacks up really well. I don't know the owners personally, except to say hello at the Boucanerie and in the restaurant from time to time to the woman with the red hair (sorry, have forgotten your name). One last thing, another reviewer said the restaurant was 30 minutes from Ottawa.... This is incorrect (unless you're on a bicycle). By car, it's less than 15 minutes from the Portage Bridge which marks the border between Quebec and Ontario (for any non-locals reading this). Bon appetit. read more

I didn't goto the restaurant this time, but went to the smoke house and took home some sausages and smoke fish platters. The fish was delicious as always - good quality fish and good execution. I had the platter with a pint of Kronenbourg 1664. I was in heaven. read more

My boyfriend made a reservation for 1 pm for our 1 year anniversary. He specifically asked for us to be seated at the table where we had our first date. On the phone, the waiter said there would be no issues. When we arrived at the restaurant, Lynn, the owner greeted us and asked us to take a seat a different table. We explained the whole situation and she said that it was IMPOSSIBLE that we made a reservation, because they don't do that. She then said, "It's not about the parking lot view, it's about gazing in each other's eyes", which of course we knew, we just thought it would be special to sit at the same table (and we were confirmed that was going to happen). Overall, she used an extremely condescending tone, and even after reading in the reservations book and seeing that we were right, she said that everyone wanted that table and we could only sit there if it was available (which is literally the reason we called and reserved in the first place). She offered no apology whatsoever for the mix up and almost made it seem like it was our fault we wanted that table in the first place. Terrible customer service experience. It's not hard to read a reservations book or at least read it before saying it's impossible and making us feel stupid. We understand that mix ups happen and running a restaurant is not the easiest thing. But a simple sorry would have gone a long way, especially knowing that it was a special day for us. read more
