Paris Polska - Ambiance " Polska "

As a Polish Canadian living in Paris I was homesick for some real home cooked food; this restaurant…read morewas exactly what I was looking for. It is run by a couple (he's Polish and she's Norwegian/ American). It reminded me of a jadło type Polish restaurant from my summers in Poland. The food is homemade by Polish ladies and tastes ALMOST as good as my mom's and grandmas cooking---which is a very big complement to the cooks :) . I had the barszcz z uszkami (beet soup with mini pierogi), placki po Bieszczadzku (my mom calls this placki po węgiersku) and the makowiec for desert. The makowiec was served warm--which kind of reminded me of makówki we make at Christmas. The food was fresh and flavourful. It was very nicely presented (much nicer than at Polish restaurants in Toronto or Chicago that I've visited) and the service was overly pleasant. On top of the delicious dinner I ordered some bigos 'à emporter'. I'm very excited to have it tomorrow. I will definitely be back with friends to introduce them to real polish food.

I didn't know much about Polish Food…read moreuntil I gave Paris Polska a try and I must say, it truly is one of the best restaurants in Paris. I've been traveling to Paris since 1982, in as many years I've noticed the decline in good french cuisine...so sad, but true, or at least affordable french cuisine. What I've learned is that there are many neighborhood eating establishments thru out the "City Of Lights" that continue to take pride in their fare. Paris Polska is one of them. It's so very affordable, the owner, Ellen Edwards is Fantastic but the Food is what really shines...it's not in the Paris Center, but It is so worth the many metro stops it takes to get there.

A reservation happened to open up for lunch while I was in Paris and we got to enjoy the lunch tasting menu with 5 courses (+2 extra small plates to begin). It is a blind tasting menu, so they give you the menu at the end of the experience which I enjoyed. It was very plant-forward and used lots of fresh seasonal vegetables. The zucchini in white bean sauce was one of the best bites I've had, and I couldn't believe how good just zucchini could taste. The seasonal vegetables plate was another highlight, with cucumbers pickled with szechuan peppercorn, shiso leaves with a sweet paste inside, and the crispiest tempura I've had. Incredible meal and service in a beautiful setting. You can tell the care and effort they put into each dish and the entire experience. I would eat here everyday if I could, and will definitely be thinking about this meal for a while.

While it was not on the hottest week in Paris, it was close with the temps being in the low 90s. I was so excited that we were able to get a reservation. We arrived to be seated by the open window and every table was filled. With a few minutes, we realized that there was no AC and because the tables were so close together, there was no air circulating and it became sweltering. Think your legs and thighs are sweating onto the seat...no joke. Later, as the other diners cleared out, it cooled down significantly. Today's menu was vegetables. I didn't expect the majority of the courses to be veggies. As one reviewer noted, it can be hit and miss based on your palate. As a meat and seafood lover, this was a huge miss for me. The raw tuna served early was good without being very memorable. At one point when this "brown" dish was served to our neighboring tables, we were so excited that it was finally a filet. Nope, it was eggplant! The eventual protein was sweetbreads in a lettuce wrap. Very flavorful but was scared to tell the teen and my sis what sweetbreads were so that they would eat it!! The pacing was troublesome where we were all super hungry and you would get 3 pieces of lettuce!! Very well cooked lettuce but still three pieces of lettuce. The amuse bouche probably was a hint of what was to come...it was essentially the water from boiling veggies - no real flavor. Kinda reminded me of L'Arpege where we dined years ago but simpler in preparation. It was one too many vegetables cooked - poor son who was 7 at the time had to eat a whole plate of BUTTERED vegetables. Wished that we had hit them on a seafood night or gone to Clamato. The ingredients and cooking were both well-thought out and prepared. Just not what I was expecting. I was hoping for a Yamt'Cha type restaurant so my miss on research.

The menu is ultra-expensive for being middle-of-the-road in taste and quality; and the place (maybe the entire building!) is in dire need of a refit and renovation. For example, we enjoyed our sky high view of Paris alongside a persistent musty odor that made it tough to even try to enjoy the expensive meal we ordered. Hopefully they renovate and do better.

We were seated in a beautiful spot, but everything went downhill from there. The server was rushed and dismissive from the start, demanding we order immediately without offering any help navigating the digital menu. It took nearly 20 minutes just to receive our drinks. When we asked to start with the salmon appetizer and wait to order our mains, we were flatly told "no." Feeling pressured, we placed a rushed order for the fish. It was awful. Completely flavorless, drenched rice, bland vegetables -- totally inedible. We each took one bite and left the rest untouched. We walked away feeling disrespected, disappointed, and frankly offended by the entire experience. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
