    Paris Polska - Ambiance " Polska "

It is run by a couple (he's Polish and she's Norwegian/ American). It reminded me of a jadło type Polish restaurant from my summers in Poland. The food is homemade by Polish ladies and tastes ALMOST as good as my mom's and grandmas cooking---which is a very big complement to the cooks :) . I had the barszcz z uszkami (beet soup with mini pierogi), placki po Bieszczadzku (my mom calls this placki po węgiersku) and the makowiec for desert. The makowiec was served warm--which kind of reminded me of makówki we make at Christmas. The food was fresh and flavourful. It was very nicely presented (much nicer than at Polish restaurants in Toronto or Chicago that I've visited) and the service was overly pleasant. On top of the delicious dinner I ordered some bigos 'à emporter'. I'm very excited to have it tomorrow. I will definitely be back with friends to introduce them to real polish food.

I've been traveling to Paris since 1982, in as many years I've noticed the decline in good french cuisine...so sad, but true, or at least affordable french cuisine. What I've learned is that there are many neighborhood eating establishments thru out the "City Of Lights" that continue to take pride in their fare. Paris Polska is one of them. It's so very affordable, the owner, Ellen Edwards is Fantastic but the Food is what really shines...it's not in the Paris Center, but It is so worth the many metro stops it takes to get there.

Fully booked at precisely 10h00 three-weeks in advance, just as it has been for more than a decade, arrival at 80 Rue de Charonne finds the green-fronted bistro largely indistinguishable from those surrounding while an interior of concrete and wood is neither exciting nor particularly comfortable. At one point part of the "Bistronomy" movement, but now perhaps best considered a Micro-seasonal experience right down to its beverages, guests are invited to begin with Aperitifs well-suited to deeply flavored Onion Broth and signature Gougeres served piping hot with bold spicing. Served at a leisurely pace by educated servers, though not the sort prone to over-explaining, proper courses begin with puffy Bread alongside housemade Labneh and Milk-fed Lamb Tartare before progressing to a green Salad with Egg Yolk dressed in White Wine, Olive Oil, and Garlic. Next taking advantage of local winter Truffles, smartly sandwiched between caramelized Endive with Pears and hints of Wine, Bread is offered to sop up all the Sauce and replenished to do the same with Monkfish in complex Buillabaisse. Not a place where one is prone to go hungry, all portions substantial including a Potato Salad offered with the Fish, Dessert on this day saw classic Crème caramel spun earthy with Mushrooms and another generous shaving of Tuber melanosporum that played well the nearly-burnt Sugar.

Technically perfect cooking, a focused yet deep wine list & really warm, friendly service. Reservation is hard to come by but if you are willing to wake up at Paris time 10am with a 21 days in advance booking, you should be able to score a resy. Although for us in the US, 10am Paris time is middle of the night so could be challenging. Ambience is French countryside rustic - Didn't have to dress up, didn't have to wait for choreographed service or any of the nonsense that the low reviews seem to crave. Just a very good restaurant. Some of the pairings were super interesting and really transformed the dish. However, on the day of our service, some dishes (such as the grilled endive) was a bit of a let down. There was a wine that is intentionally oxidated, very daring pairing but I was not a fan. Would like to come back and give it one more try!

The menu is ultra-expensive for being middle-of-the-road in taste and quality; and the place (maybe the entire building!) is in dire need of a refit and renovation. For example, we enjoyed our sky high view of Paris alongside a persistent musty odor that made it tough to even try to enjoy the expensive meal we ordered. Hopefully they renovate and do better.

We were seated in a beautiful spot, but everything went downhill from there. The server was rushed and dismissive from the start, demanding we order immediately without offering any help navigating the digital menu. It took nearly 20 minutes just to receive our drinks. When we asked to start with the salmon appetizer and wait to order our mains, we were flatly told "no." Feeling pressured, we placed a rushed order for the fish. It was awful. Completely flavorless, drenched rice, bland vegetables -- totally inedible. We each took one bite and left the rest untouched. We walked away feeling disrespected, disappointed, and frankly offended by the entire experience. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
