I had an amazing experience at Le Petit Marcel. As a former Washingtonian, I was surrounded by French restaurants in Washington, D.C. Le Petit Parcel could compete with the best of them, offering a variety of menu options that will meet everyone's liking. I ventured here with a friend over the Holiday season and we had an amazing time. The restaurant was bustling and our waiter was super friendly. I ordered a few martinis and their steak frites, which is always a favorite of mine. I also reminisced of celebrating Chicago Pride in the corner many years ago when it was formerly Avenue Tavern. Price wise I felt like it was a decent value for the quality of food and drink that I consumed. It was kinda funny to dine here in a white table cloth setting considering 10 years ago I sat in this same spot ordering buckets of beer while watching Detroit sports at Avenue Tavern... The interior is intimate and cute with the decor and exposed ceilings, but the layout is super tight and cramped. The moment you walk in the bar is right there and the host stand is jammed in a corner, and there is no place to stand while waiting for a table - poor layout and design. Tables are on top of each other so you'll be dining w those next to you. The temperature inside was so hot it was uncomfortable. People at a table next to us were complaining about the same thing, so it wasn't just us. The service was top notch, however the bussers are aggressive and took away a drink before it was finished. We ordered the three cheese plate to start, but we received only two cheeses and extra butter instead of that third cheese. Entrees were delicious (i had the steak frites with peppercorn sauce) as were most the cocktails, however the lychee martini seemed to be lacking vodka. Drinks were pretty solid and our server was super sweet but food was meh (but take this with a grain of salt bc I don't think I've ever had French food). The food and ambiance was great but the place is VERY small and they pack as many tables in as they can. They have smaller tables lined against the wall that are so close together that I could barely squeeze my way to the booth side. The table next to me had to physically move their table over so I could sit and I'm a fairly petite person. A plus size individual would likely not be able to dine in this restaurant comfortably. While the ambiance and live piano was nice for dinner, I think it is a bit overpriced for the dining experience you receive, given the person at the table next to me accidentally elbowed me during dinner. read more

It would be a cute / well designed casual neighborhood French "inspired" restaurant, however, it's a bit too expensive for a casual meal and there is much better French cuisine in chicago. I ordered: 75 cocktail: it was nice, tart, though a bit light on the gin. Glass of Cote de Rhône wine: highlight of meal Steak Frites w/ peppercorn sauce. It was definitely undercooked- I ordered medium rare and this was very rare (but hey, I like carpaccio too I guess). I was disappointed that the sauce was served directly on the steak and not in a gravy boat like most restaurants. The fries were soggy and not great. The total was $83ish dollars (including tip) which seemed way overpriced for the food quality. Service was friendly but they mixed up who's meal was who's which considering we both ordered steak frites but at different temps (both undercooked) and different sauces it was surprising they didn't make note of it. The restaurant is super cute and it's a shame they don't put more money into hiring a good chef because it has potential. Bottom line: if you're craving French cuisine, Mon Ami Gabi isn't far and much better. Le Gran Bucherie is also a great option. Unfortunately, Le Petite Marcel can be skipped, however, you can have an adequate meal albeit at a high price point. read more

We made a 12:15 reservation for Mother's Day in the dining room at Le Petit Marcel. When we arrived we were told they were running 20 minutes behind and we could sit at the bar. The bar is in front of the door which opens and closes and cold. Eventually they offered us a cramped table in the front piano room. NOT the dining room where the reservation was made. My elderly mother who by then was freezing after waiting over 30 minutes wanted to not be seated in the front room. The hostess said we would need to wait a "little longer". We waited and saw every group that walked in after us seated immediately. Eventually the manager came and said "well we offered you a table and you didn't want it'" By now it had been at least 45 minutes waiting and the manager had been rude. Fyi we are a black family. Was it racism? I did not see anyone else have to wait or dismissed the way we were. My husband and I came here for pre-Christmas date night. I'd been here with a girlfriend just for drinks and was excited to try it again. It was meh. The ambiance was lovely! Perfect for date night. However, it was hot as hell!! We were both fairly uncomfortable. We had two servers. Our first was super attentive, but then she left for the night and our second server was so overwhelmed with tables that she could barely keep up. Not her fault, but definitely understaffed. The mussels were impeccable. However, you can get similar ones for a better price point at Hopleaf. I had the scallops. They were salty and didn't have enough of a sear on them for my liking. And three for $30 was too much for such a small portion. My husband had the duck and absolutely loved it!! The earl grey crème brûlée was terrible! The crust was overdone to the point of tasting burnt and the earl grey overpowered the simplicity of a more traditional custard. The high point, besides the mussels, were the drinks. Great after dinner cocktails. I don't think we'll be back for dinner. It was an expensive meal for us to not be sufficiently full, $230 for an app, two entrees, dessert, wine, and two cocktails. This felt like a restaurant in New York or London to me. The restaurant is small-- the front room has live music, a large bar, and some tables and the secondary room is just dining. The decor here is cute and creates an intimate and romantic vibe. This is a great date spot. The staff are attentive and the meal was paced very well! Our food and drinks were lovely! We enjoyed pasta, steak tartare, and escargot. I tried the London fog martini which was beautiful but pricey. When imagining a romantic or intimate evening Le Petit Marcel's cozy & dimly lit dining room is exactly what comes to mind. however, the tables are a little too tightly packed. if you're seated on the wall, you'll have to pull the tables apart to squeeze in and out. we came on a slow night so it wasn't a huge deal but it would've been a challenge to do so with anyone on either side. now onto the important parts... starting off with the classics, we had the steak tartare and escargot. the tartare was a bit on the sharp side but i'm a vinegar girl so i was into it. the escargot is creative & delicate, served on a beautiful, flaky biscuit that melts in your mouth. for our entrees, we were in a seafood mood and went for the royal pasta - a beautiful lobster pasta in a tomato, cream, & tarragon sauce. it was light and filling all at the same time. we also tried the market fish which on this day was a trout in burre blanc served on a bed of green lentils. it was moist & bright but the lobster stole the show in comparison. their dessert menu looked heavenly but when we spotted the pistachio sour we had to drink our extra calories! creative cocktails across the board. read more

If you come here, come with a lot of patience. We purposely went on a weekday to avoid the crowds and even though it was only up to half capacity it took over an hour to bring our entrée. Food: -Best dish: escargot (it's not what i thought it would be) - it's super rich and delicious and the smell is delightful. -The frites in the steak frites were very thick - still tasty, but there was not enough crunch to then, so the texture was pretty soggy (even the ones not touching the sauce). -Pistachio crème brûlée was good - nothing to write home about, but good. -Pass: Caesar salad was very poorly dressed, but the dressing was tasty. Issue: If you're sitting at the front of the restaurant, the piano does get quite loud - and our server even said they get a ton of complaints about it - it's a great concept in theory - but it makes conversation quite difficult and my ears are still quite irritated from it. The pianist was very friendly and even said if he was playing too loud to wave, but that shouldn't be the job of the table sitting in front of the piano to tell him that - and it puts everyone in an awkward position. I had the pleasure of dining here with my wife to celebrate our anniversary, and it was a fantastic experience. I booked a reservation, and upon arrival, the host immediately wished us a happy anniversary and sat us. Our server was friendly, helpful, accommodating, and attentive. He made sure to make our anniversary special and memorable. We decided to dine early, as they offer a happy hour, with oysters for ~$2 a piece. I got a dozen oysters, and wow were they good and meaty, with no shell fragments at all. Probably some of the best oysters I've had in Chicago. My wife got the French Onion Soup, which was probably the best I've ever tried. We then got the escargot. I loved this dish - it was bursting with flavor. Very umami, a little salty, slightly sweet, with a hint of spice. The drinks were alright - my wife had a mocktail that was decent, and my Old Fashioned was passable. Drinks don't seem like the highlight here; next time I may get wine instead. For entrees, I got the Salmon Wellington, and my wife got the Lobster Pasta. Both dishes were absolutely fantastic. The pasta was cooked perfectly with a good amount of lobster and a nice spice to it. The Wellington was delicious, with a good sized portion. To top it all off, we had the Meringue Cloud, which was quite literally a cloud; sweet burst of air with a nice lemon twist to it. It was great. Waitstaff is very kind and seem to be doing their best. Maybe understaffed? It took us an extraordinarily long time to be served at all points of the night with drinks being 20min+. The food took an incredibly long time as well. We ordered, much later we were told that they did not have enough of the ordered entrees - only four (not five) were available. The menus were not up to date and not accurate (they are shifting to a fall menu, but did not have menus for that). Was very excited to try this spot that was recommended by friends, but the experience fell well short. We sat around 8pm, probably ordered around 8:30, got drinks and wine around 8:50, food closer to 9:20/9:30, and tried to wrap up around 9:50 to be done. I'm sure we will revisit at some point in the future and hope it was a fluke, but not for a good while most likely... First time in a new French restaurant, you can't go wrong with onion soup, escargot and mussels.The onion soup is superb. Its hearty and the beef stock is heavily infused in that onion. The wine gives it extra substance. Best ever? Could be. The escargot is served in a bed of puff pastry. The better to soak up all that snail essence - life is good at this point. The mussels were fine. I would've preferred baguettes or Italian bread over sourdough that came with the mussels. My wife really likes the pistachio crème brûlée. I however thought the French rice pudding with it's bananas foster sauce is to die for. Its richness is intense with all that butter, brown sugar and wine that you can only consume this slowly. Our host Paloma and especially our server Samantha was fun to talk too. Considering its white table cloth and napkins the price is quite fair. Service was so bad. I went for happy hour on Thursday and was sat right away but did have to wait some time for someone take my order. I did get my food and drink in decent time. Waiting for a server to order a second drink took forever and also waiting to get the second drink took forever. A worker then comes up to me before I receive it and tells me they have a reservation coming for my table in 5 minutes, essentially telling me to leave? The only reason I'm still there is because of their slow service. I would have been more understanding if I was approached with more friendliness but they acted like it was my problem they had a reservation for the table they sat me at. We dined at Le Petit Marcel for the first time on Christmas Eve, their prix fixe menu which was wonderful but a tad overpriced (also the menu was NOT posted in advance on ANY platform so we were flying blind, on blind faith). My companion had the chicken liver mousse which was baked in a puffed pastry, quite marvelous while I had gougieres (a cheese puff) for appetizer. Main courses where the turbot for me and roast quail for her, both excellent as were desserts, buche de noel for me (yule log, originated in France) and poached pear for her. Our server Roxanne was very friendly, professional and prompt as was the rest of the serving staff. Cocktails to start were a French Martini and their Mezcal Reviver, both prepared by their friendly bartender who greeted us at arrival while the hostess was busy seating other people at the time. The bar was packed on our way out an hour later, so this place has become quite popular! In closing, we would also like to thank hostess Sidney (not sure if she was present that night) for trying to help us unsnaggle a Thanksgiving Day reservation that was caught up in the OpenTable Experiences fiasco and we ended up losing $55 (not the resto's fault but OT's). If this Christmas Eve reservation were more than $1 person, we might have hesitated. Meanwhile we are hoping to try the restaurant's regular menu very soon! read more

The burger had a French onion soup flavor profile. It was very good, a little messy and definitely not petite. My friend had the lobster pasta. I took a bite and it was amazing. Service was great, with our server giving us great recommendations for drinks. I got the L'Alpinista and Fall Smash. I had a solid experience at Le Petite Marcel! The inside is very cute with tons of fun wallpaper on the walls. The pianist was a fun little addition too although we were sitting in the dining room so didn't really get to enjoy him. Our waitress was awesome. She was kind and seemed knowledgeable about the menu/didn't make outrageous suggestions which is always appreciated. It's a red flag when a waiter is suggesting all the most expensive items on the menu. To start, we had the french onion soup and the tartare. I thought the french onion soup was delicious and the tartare was good too. Sometimes I get grossed out halfway through eating tartare and I didn't this time! We also had the steak frites, one with the red wine and the other with shallot sauce. The shallot sauce was essentially butter and I thought the red wine sauce didn't really have a stand out taste -- but both were still good. Lastly, we had a chocolate lava cake which was pretty good! Well do you want to sit inside or out? We chose outside. Drinks and food were ordered. Drinks came first and then food came little at a time. The first food to come was French toast and yellow jackets started to come. At first it was just a couple, but then they started to swarm. It was impossible to eat comfortably. We asked to be moved inside and they said absolutely not. The inside was closed. I reminded them we could have chosen that to begin with and they said it didn't matter, since we didn't choose that we couldn't go in. Meanwhile our food is getting cold and not all the food is even out yet, because they strung it out so much. Then the steak came, ordered medium and it was extremely rare. My frustration with Le Petit Marcel began before I dined there. I wanted to arrange for a dessert with a candle. That's it. Simple. With no phone number listed on their website, I had to Google to find one but it just rang and rang, on two separate occasions including during opening hours. Of course, I had no way of knowing if I was calling the right number. I did put the request in my Open Table reservation and sent a dm on insta but decided to stop in just to be sure since I live nearby. The hostess told me it would be no problem to arrange for profiteroles with a candle. When I mentioned that I couldn't get through on the phone she told me the phone was "jenky" and she couldn't hear it ring. When we arrived for our reservation I again told our server that we had ordered dessert with a candle. No problem. Well, guess what didn't happen. When I was able to find a server to order it (and this is now my 5th request) we received ONE profiterole and no candle. Marcel presents itself as a "refined dining experience" with a long dress code and penalties for noncompliance. But they are clearly not up to the task on a very basic level. A candle in a dessert is such a simple and inexpensive touch and yet means a lot to your customers. I'm truly baffled at the lack of communication or disregard it takes to drop a ball like this FIVE times. TGIFridays pulls this off seamlessly. The food was good. The "frites" are fries, the salmon en croute was good and the damn profiterole was also good. The decor is charming and love the live piano in the lounge. Service was professional if a bit slow but it seems like the adults have abdicated the front-facing functions, regrettably. We need an elevated spot in Lakeview, please do better. read more

My husband was not thrilled about the dress code, but I appreciated it and the reality is, on a Sunday night, they didn't appear to enforce it, based on what I observed, so whatever. We had a reservation and were seated right away. I was disappointed to be told that they were out of the filet mignon, which I had planned to order, but oh well. We ordered round of drinks and then some appetizers: oeuf mimosa (honestly, I thought they were just okay, but the other three members of our party loved them) and escargot de bourgogne (OUTSTANDING!). Drinks were very good too: the London Fog cocktail is excellent, and I had two Pinot Noirs over the course of the night which were great. I ended up with the steak frites for my entree, and was absolutely thrilled: it was cooked to perfection, and both the steak and the frites were perfectly seasoned. So good! Our table shared the protiferole for dessert, which was nothing spectacular but very good. Service was great all night and our server comped my husband a cocktail when his entree ran late, which was much appreciated. We were eager for our first experience at this new addition to the Broadway dining scene. What a disappointment. Service: slow. It took about 10 minutes after we were seated for anyone to approach our table and ask if we wanted water or drinks. The drinks took about 10 minutes to appear. A salad wasn't served with the rest of the appetizers, but was presented with the entree. Instructions to cancel the salad for this reason weren't followed. Entrees took another 15 minutes or so to arrive. This restaurant doesn't serve regular coffee, just espresso and americano. Three of our party of four ordered decaf and were presented with the espresso. We should have been told when we ordered. The coffee was cold too. They have a good bar. The Armagnac old fashioned was good, as was the gin fog. Food: Onion soup good Steak tartare good Salmon mousse served cold Royal pasta served cold Chef's pasta with added chicken served cold. Because it was cold, the sauce had broken and was oily and unappetizing We returned the cold chef's pasta for steak frites. The owner had to be called to our table for this to happen. We asked for the red wine sauce to be served on the side: it was on top of the steak, causing it to cool very quickly. Sauteed green beans were dreadfully overseasoned with paprika, must have been a heaping tablespoon or more. I thought they had tomato sauce when I first saw them. Dessert (pineapple with ice cream and rum sauce, floating island) was acceptable, but nothing to write home about. The restaurant is cute, but the music was so loud you couldn't hear yourself think, much less have conversation. We asked that it be turned down, and it was, but just a little. The servers were nice, but they came around more often to take things away, then to check on us for drinks or our meal. These were literally the size of a pea and that's being generous. The bass was a decent portion, maybe 3x3 inches in size but half of it was bony like they cut the fish filet close to the neck region, a bit slimy, so only about half was edible. The broth was decent but nothing memorable. The price point is the price point, but the quality for the price is a pass. For quick drinks, shared appetizers and easy way to spend an hour before a real meal, maybe I can see that, but much better meals and timely service for this price point, especially in this neighborhood. I feel like reviews are left for either really great experiences or pretty bad experiences. Unfortunately, this was the latter. Pretty much everything about our dining experience here was bad. The decor and ambiance was the only redeeming quality. The steak frites, which should be a staple of a good French restaurant, had barely any seasoning and was served rare, though ordered medium rare. Our server didn't check on us often enough to know the steak needed to be sent back. Each dish we ordered was mediocre and especially considering the price. Even the cocktails were unbalanced. Would have ordered a second drink but the server didn't come back often enough and same issue for running out of water multiple times. Do yourself a favor and skip this spot. read more

ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! Incredible neighborhood restaurant. The food was delicious and the service was top notch. I read the reviews before making a reservation. I was hesitant at first but glad we went. They got the kinks out; the frites are no longer soggy. It's unfortunate that you need to pay for bread service. I think it's ridiculous since the apps, dinner and drinks are not cheap. Don't get me wrong, we all enjoyed our dinner land looking forward to going back. read more

My wife and I looked forward to a new French restaurant in the neighborhood and I was pleased with the pleasant space here. But the food was terrible. The Poulet Paillard was dry as a bone and lacked any flavor. The Steak Frite was tough and nearly impossible to chew and drenched in mediocre sauce. Creamed spinach was badly under seasoned. They were out of some sides and nearly all French wines by the glass. Service was good and the bussers were very attentive. But none of this makes up for the terrible food. We may give another try in a while, but this was very disappointing. read more

The food and service were absolutely lovely. I was surprised to easily find a Friday night reservation especially considering how packed it was. We enjoyed live music in the piano lounge. My only complaint is the seats/tables are extremely close together making it tough to get to your seat against the wall without disrupting your neighbor but once you're seated it's very New York vibes. We shared a bottle of the Chardonnay, escargot and Royal pasta! I would come back for the pasta alone :) read more

We arrived a few minutes prior to our reservation. The hostess asked if we preferred sitting inside or outside. We chose outside. We ordered our drinks and then food. The drinks came and were very good. Two of us ordered French toast, one with a side of bacon. One order was steak, medium, one was an omelet, one I'm not. sure of the name and one was the petit cheeseburger. We began eating the French toast so it didn't get cold as the temps were cool. Meanwhile, a yellow jacket flew in and around. No big deal. The omelet comes out. Then the unnamed item. More yellow jackets arrive. Pretty soon we were swarmed with yellow jackets. We didn't even have all our food yet and eating was becoming impossible much less enjoyable. Finally, the side of bacon comes out, well after the French toast. We ask to be moved inside and we're told no, they would not seat us inside. We said we were offered inside seating at arrival and they said yes but that was then, this is now, basically. We pointed out the wasp situation. At this point they are crawling in and on our drinks, on our plates, on the food. The steak arrives, totally extra rare. Even the server was like, that's not medium. The final item, cheeseburger, arrives. And we are told by mgmt that they will not move us inside to a table because they can't seat us inside anymore. It's the rule. Inside is empty. We've come a ways to have a nice meal and are told, "we can't control the wasps". No but you CAN control how you respond. Would you enjoy this meal? The restaurant has a great ambiance. I sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and attentive. I ordered the steak frites. The hanger steak was great. The frites were tasty but they were soggy. The green beans were swimming in shallot oil and I would skip this. The cocktails were expertly prepared. The dessert menu was forgettable for a French restaurant. Thus I did not order a dessert. The piano player was entertaining. In regard to a dress code, I don't know as the restaurant is located on N. Broadway and I would not feel comfortable over dressed. read more
