We went their for a birthday and Because we were a group of more than 12 people, we had a 3 dishes menu of 42€ proposed. The red currant sorbet was awesome !!!! Wine OK but expensive. The dinner proved to be a big hit with my kids and was a nice break from some of the expensive/formal options we chose on our recent trip. Highlights are definitely the classic local cheese dishes like tartiflette and Raclette, although, as is the case with most restaurants, they will only serve the latter as well as Fondue for a minimum of 2 people. The atmosphere is most definitely casual; you can come in in a sweater and jeans and be as well dressed as anyone. The focus of the food is value (relatively, you are after all in one of the most expensive ski towns in France). Service is typically mountain/French, running the room with fewer employees than you are used to in the US, so the pace is slower, and they do only 1 turn an evening, meaning you are eating either around 7 pm or around 9 pm.

But the 1992 Olympics were held in Albertville, so I suppose some jetsetting billionaire said "The drive is too long, I will build a helipad for you!" Anyways, the food here is authentic Savoiard cooking. While I can't really judge it against others since I am a neophyte, it was very very good. We had the raclette and also the reblochon fondues. The dishes included the cheeses, potatoes, cold meats, cooked pork belly (yes, the French have been doing pork belly for hundreds of years, long before it got sexy hot in the U.S.) and sausage. It also came with pickled onions and a huge bowl of green salad. We had a small oven on the table which had very hot coals in it. You used this to melt the cheese, then pour the cheese over anything on your plate. Wow. Yum. The food here is simple, but very wholesome and it is fun to "cook" your own. That's why shabu shabu is so cool, too. We stuffed ourselves silly, and actually had glasses of armagnac at the end. Fantastic.

There were so many different courses that I will try to highlight the best or most surprising. A pea soup with a pea puree, a pea consomme, and actual peas. Interesting presentation, and very pea-y. (I like that word, ha ha) A fish mousse with a thyme cream sauce. This one was very simply presented and unadorned with any color or texture whatsoever. For a chef to make something so plain in these times shows either laziness and unimaginativeness, or it shows guts. In this case it was guts. This dish was so aromatic and flavorful, and the texture was fantastic. Another soup with girolle mushroome and a foie gras cream. The fois gras was not overpowering, quite subtle. A tomato "tartare" made to look like beef tartare, with anise flavor and microgreens, and also a frozen slab of tomato water on top, which you busted through with your fork to get at the lovely tomato below. It was fantastic and quite inventive. The obligatory cheese course, followed by 3 different desserts, randomly presented to different people at the table. So of course we had to share. We simply passed our plates to the right. All were great, one was a bit fruity without much variety, but still very good. Then the mignardises came. Oh my. Explode-in-your-mouth cylinders of chocolate with liquors inside. Wow. Other jelly-like things, too many different things to remember! Our wine was divine, the service impeccable. At times there were 4 or 5 people attending to us. (we were a party of 10) I highly recommend this restaurant if you ever get a chance to be in the French Alps!

The proprietor-chef, Evan, is of Irish-Welsh origin and his great specialty is an Angus steak from Scotland aged to perfection, salted just so and cooked on the open fire that also heats the dining room. Everything else in the menu focuses on local cheeses and other elements of Savoyard culinary genius. Our favorite appetizer, which can also serve as a lighter main dish, is the Tarte aux Trompettes de La Mort, a magnificent baked torte made with local wild mushrooms. The Reblochonette is a fabulous melted cheese experience. Evan's special at the time of our two visits was a superb chicken breast stuffed with basil and pine nuts on a bed of spinach, which in turn was on a bed of whipped creamy potatoes. We tried all three deserts and loved them all: a dense chocolate fondant, a light bread pudding, and a creamy lemon posset. Pricing is very reasonable for the quality, and the location is a destination in itself. Well worth the trip. The only caution is no credit card use, since the refuge is off the grid for electricity (solar only). The phone was working only intermittently, so call ahead to tell them you're coming and leave a message if no answer. The restaurant's website will have updated phone numbers and menu details.
