NOTICE: This beautiful hotel is now unfortunately owned by the government of the Sultan of Brunei, who has sanctioned sharia law in his East Asian Muslim county and calls it "a great accomplishment."
This Islamic criminal law includes punishments such as flogging, dismemberment and death by stoning for crimes such as rape, adultery and sodomy. For every night that you stay at this hotel (or any of the Dorchester Collection hotels), someone in Brunei gets stoned to death for adultery or has his arm chopped off for stealing. There's no amount of glamor that can excuse that.
Avoid these hotels if you care about human rights and don't want to be dragged back to the 7th century. This hotel should be empty every night until the Sultan divests. read more
