The very first time my family bought a birthday cake from this sister cafe of Maxim (on Bayview), we received a terrible product. We had ordered the black sesame cake and when we picked it up from the store, the employee not only gave me the blankest stare, but also picked an EXISTING cake from the gallery/window and proceeded to THEN bring it to the back to the kitchen to squeeze "Happy Birthday" on it. This gave me the worst premonition as I felt the cake was not freshly made. My fears were confirmed later on when we cut up slices and served it after dinner that night. The sponge was super dry and practically stale as well. I was quite surprised that Maxim would allow a product like that to stay in their gallery, let alone have it be served up to a customer past a certain period of time. ANYWAYS, fast forward to recently, my cousin ordered her wedding cake here. It was a matcha cream, multi-layer sponge cake w/ a layer of strawberry jam near the bottom. This cake was MUCH better than the aforementioned one we bought in the past and the sponge was not dry this time. One thing my cousin mentioned though which imo was lame, was that they charged her $25 labour to put real roses on top of her cake. The kicker is that my cousin had to bring her own flowers! So not only did she have to provide them her own flowers but they also charged her a BS labour fee (all you gotta do is cut the tops of the flowers off and stick em on the cake). Total money grab lol. Given the sum of my cake experience w/ this offshoot of the original Maxim (black sesame one and then this much better matcha wedding cake), I'd say 3 stars overall is fair and balanced. Although, if I'm gonna order from Maxim again on my own, I think I'll stick to their almond meringue cakes at the OG location. read more

Walked into this place a couple times but didn't pickup anything because I was too full from afternoon tea. Finally dedicated some time to just come by here and grab some slices of cake to try! Lots of options to choose from and they all looked so good! Mango Black Sesame Cake - Decent cake, but black seasame flavour and grainy texture in the sesame cream was too overpowering. Cake itself was fluffy and moist. Nice to try, but would not get again. Strawberry Pistachio Meringue - Super hard to eat, but a super tasty cake. The sandwich of cream between meringue was heavenly paired with fresh strawberries. Can't wait to try other variations of the meringue. read more

It is an attractive bakery cafe at the plaza behind First Markham Place. There were three tables with chairs for dine-in. We bought the six slice mango meringue cake. Service was welcoming and friendly. At the first slice, the meringue tasted over baked and too dry. The cake held well refrigerated over the week. As the days went by, the meringue in the cake did not become soft, instead the cake tasted better at the end of the week. My only first and last impression is that the pieces of mango in the cake was not the best quality that I have had with the Maxim meringue cakes or any mango cakes. Many pieces of mango had the stringy fibres that is closest to the mango seed and this took away from the enjoyment, thus the rating. The quality at the original Maxim on Finch is superior and the location I will return to. read more

Couldn't resist revisiting this fabulous cakeshop for its beautiful craftsmanship again. This time we ordered a 10" Mango Almond Meringue Cake to visit a friend's family for dinner as dessert. My friends were amazed at the moment they opened the box. "The cake is so pretty. I didn't know you could find beautiful cakes like this in the neighborhood!" and "It is so beautiful and I just wanted to keep looking at this eye candy without eating it." and "Did you get it from far away? Where did you get it from?".... I am telling you, everybody was so happy with the awesomeness of this handcrafted cake, just by appreciating the look of it. The moment when we started eating it, awwww.... we all just couldn't talk anymore. The crunchiness from the meringue was so good. So light, so airy, so fluffy. The cream in the middle was simply fantastic. Smooth, rich, and tasty, and done with a great amount of crushed roasted almonds. However, the mango flavor could be richer to balance out the sweetness in my opinion. Anyhow, the beauty of having meringue cake is that it wouldn't stuff you up like some other heavy cakes would do. Won't feel guilty about eating too much, LOL! Such a great dessert for the entire group. My friends were greatly delighted, and I felt so cool about bringing the meringue in, haha! So happy about it. Overall 1.5, but happy to bump 0.5 for their customer service. Taro cake was dry, the taro while was real had a really unappealing texture, as it was grainy and was crumbly. There was an artifical flavoring in the cream. Layers of the cake was minimal, and the cake itself was quite small in size for the price. I believe this might have been a stale cake, perhaps a day or two already. Lychee cake was ok, and it did taste like lychee but sponge was just average. Quite a sweet cake overall. This one I may give it a 3/5 but wouldn't pay 7.50 for it. The pastries were also ok, albeit quite sweet. The peach tasted like those from a can, and the creme wasn't that flavourful and was overpowered by the sweetness of the canned peach flavour. The layers of the pastry was flaky though, and I can see it being a good base, but with this combination it was underwhelming. Overall I do want to support the soft opening, but there is definitely room for improvement. Hopefully give this place some time and they will make a few touch ups! read more

This location is new! A bit hard to find to be honest! The sign is too small and easy to drive by. Be on the lookout for a small gray sign with small black writing!! Maxims has always been the place to get the 'cake to impress'. Super delicious, nice to look at, and not a typical cake....so it's different without being risky. Of course, I'm talking about their meringue cake! A bottom layer of meringue, middle layer of cream with fresh mangos, then topped with meringue! Came here for the first time and purchased their mango almond meringue cake. Check my picture to see how nicely they decorated the cake for Christmas. Super nice! The cake itself was delicious and everyone enjoyed it. The cream was not sweet, which is a good thing, to balance the sweetness of the meringue. Service was friendly, too! Le Maxim is a cute cafe and patisserie that opened up near First Markham place. They have limited seating (12 seats). Similar to it's sister bakeries at Bayview (Richmond Hill) & Finch Avenue East (Willowdale), they sell pastries and cakes, as well as cake slices. They are particularly well known for their meringue cakes with fresh fruit such as mango and strawberry. Unique to this location is a purple taro cake which clearly has real taro in it. We purchased the mango almond meringue cake slice ($7), which had chunks of fresh mango and lots of almond speckled meringue and whipped cream. You can tell that the ingredients are all fresh. The meringue is crisp but not overly sweet. The fresh whipped cream helps marry the crunchy meringue and sweet mango. Cash only during soft opening as their POS system hasn't yet arrived. Will definitely be back for the mango meringue cake, and to try the strawberry shortcake and danishes. read more

I used to go to Le Maxim's Finch location, the cakes were elegant and tasty. So, I thought to give Le Maxim behind FMP a try. We went to this shop around dinnertime yesterday. The shop was empty, but with lots of cakes and sweets. I got mango cake and chocolate dessert. After we got back home we took a bite of chocolate dessert, it tasted kind of weird. When I was about to throw it out, I realized there was mold on it. It was mostly inside the cake. I was super disgusted by it. I have never been to a cake shop that sells moldy desserts to customers. read more

So convenient to finally have a Maxims patisserie near home! However, not sure if this was due to their soft opening, but I found their products inconsistent to the other two shops in North York and Richmond Hill. First off, do not expect this shop to be the same size as the other two. It is quite petite and I would say mostly for take outs. Parking, as usual, is not easy to find in this Plaza, especially when you've got at least 3 restaurants literally around the corner. The shop is quite easy to find though as it is facing the road. My favourite item at Maxims is by far their meringue cakes. I usually visit the one in North York as they make it all puffy like a cloud, compared to the Richmond Hill one which makes it flat. Now at this location they do make mini ones that are puffed and round... but the flaw with this design is that the entire thing is round. See where I'm getting at? The thing rolls around when you try to stick your utensil into it, and you either end up crushing the thing or it just ends up not looking really nice after. A simple solution to this would probably be just to make a flat bottom Other than that, will have to visit again to see how they operate after their soft opening. read more

Understand they are still going through soft opening so trying to give them a pass but expected atleast a better execution based on price point and big name of Maxim. Their POS wasn't setup yet but they didn't have a sign that said Cash Only so only found out when I tried to pay with card...luckily I had cash. There were like 4-5 people working behind the cake stand so a lot of standing around. Ordered Mango Shortcake and Napolean and heard the worker had to ask another worker which was the Napolean. Another worker insists to hand write a receipt using carbon copy invoice...totally unnecessary and waste of effort and paper as I was only buyung ready made slices in the cake stand. Took the cakes home and probably our fault with driving but small tip that other cake shops do is put a piece of small tape under the piece to avoid it moving around in the box. Taste wise is pretty average. Two pieces were $13+ that's like 30% more than Saint Germain...if you are going to charge that big of a premium then there will be higher standards in terms of taste, service, and overall execution...so I am expecting more. Will give them benefit of the doubt and try them again in couple weeks. read more

We had lunch at cafe de Hong Kong and walked by afterwards. Wanted something as afternoon tea. My husband ordered a slice of black forecast cake and I had the mango almond meringue. Both were delicious. They have a special right now for $7.50. A slice of cake and a tea/coffee. Totally hit the spot and the service was excellent as well. read more

Finally a new location in Markham that's conveniently located behind fmp! I've been going to the Finch and Leslie Maxim's since elementary school and have always loved their mango meringue cake. At this bakery/cafe, the decor is much more modern and cute. I believe the taro mousse cake is only found at this location and not at the other Maxim's. The workers there are friendly and polite. If you go, pls bring cash as their POS has not yet been set up. When I went, I ordered a strawberry meringue cake (after so many years, i'm still not sick of it!) that wasn't available in the fridge. I was asked to wait for several minutes and they made it immediately in the kitchen. I was kindly offered a bottle of Fiji water while waiting =)!! read more

Amazing service and really tasty cakes especially the meringue and the taro cake. They also probably have the most decent coffee in the area. I came across this place and decided to give it a try. FYI - It's only soft opening and currently only accept cash. I definitely will come back! read more
