I would travel to Le Du wines more often if it wasn't so difficult to get to. I was in need of a hard to find Barolo, and Wine-Searcher.com helped me find it. The wine in question was 2020 Gaja Dagromis Barolo. While I was there I found a 2021 Uccelliera Rosso, and a 2018 Piancornello Brunello. The wines were fairly priced. read more

What an awesome wine shop! As an early holiday gift, my boss planned a Pinot Noir tasting for our team at Le Du... I think we sampled 5-6 different Pinots - some from the west coast and some from France. In doing this, they also set up a nice array of cheese and some meats for us to enjoy as we sampled away. Everything was great, really. But what was even more great was the knowledge that Timothy - our somm teacher for the tasting - had. What a wealth of knowledge. It was impressive to learn so much in a relatively short period of time (we were there for about an hour and a half). He truly is a subject matter expert here. I spend a lot of time in this neighborhood, and everytime I pass Ledu wine I have to go in. Not sure what that says about me. It doesn't matter what I ask for, they have it. Spanish region spicey, extravagant gift bubbly, please forgive me hubby, it doesn't matter. And- I take home their crates. They keep the crates from the wines, which make amazing planter etc. They give them away for free. On Saturdays they have wine tasting, and the vibe is always delicious. read more

I cannot say I have ever physically stepped into Le Du's Wine store, BUT I can say that they still deserve my 5 star rating and here's why. A few months ago I was doing some research online to find a very specific bottle of sparkling wine and it appeared, based on this one website, that it was only sold in 3 stores in NYC. I called two of the places and neither had it, but Le Du's did. The reason I wanted it was because my boyfriend and I had shared this same bottle on our first date and the reason we had bought it was because he shared the name of the wine! SO for our anniversary, I had wanted to find it again. Knowing that Le Du's had it, I planned on stopping by on my way to dinner that night to pick up a bottle and bring it home to give him as a gift. Unfortunately that night, there was the craziest unexpected storm. Subways were delayed, uber had serious surge pricing, and suddenly not only was I already going to be extremely late for dinner but there was no chance I was going to make it to Le Du's by the time it closed. So, I called them and asked if there was any way they could wait for me or deliver it or literally do ANYTHING. And to my surprise, after a few calls back and forth, they had their delivery guy, who was well past done with his deliveries for the night, take it to the restaurant so that it was waiting for me there. Of course, the guy on the phone had asked me if there was a reason I needed this specific bottle on this specific night, so he knew the whole story, but it was so sweet and thoughtful that he made it work for us and he even included a nice note wishing us both a happy anniversary. Needless to say I did not need to stop by the store to know that they deserve 5 stars and although they are nowhere near where I live I will be stopping there first if I ever need a special bottle of anything ever again! read more

This might just be the furthest wine store from where I live in Manhattan, but I was not too far away tonight, and finally stopped in. I found a great selection, some familiar wines but many unknown to me and from smaller vintners, with no crap, and bottles in all price ranges. Several areas were arranged by varietal too, which I thought was kinda cool. (i.e. finding a chateauneauf du pape next to a Tablas Creek instead of one being in the "French" section and one in the "California" section.) The staff was helpful and friendly, moreso than in most places, and not pushy. Prices were on par with other stores in the city. I will happily return someday. read more

I drove down the Grande Route des Vins in Burgundy about a year ago and so am very familiar with Burgundy and its wines. I did the same in Alsace and while I'm not the biggest fan of Alsacian rieslings, I love the Pinot Gris and Gewurtztraminers from this part of the country. Oh and let's not forget the Vendange Tardirve version of all these wines.. Out of all the wine shops I've been to in New York, Le Du has the most interesting collection of French wines. Prices reflect the care given the inventory. Having said that, if I had to put a collection like this, I'd probably charge even more (okay, maybe not if I got to taste all the wine and travel around Europe looking for little producers but still). The shop does not try to cover everything but what it chooses to cover is refreshing and slightly unexpected. It has an interesting Italian selection. The space allocated its Spanish wines is tiny. It covers South America briefly as well. And lastly, it has a nice sparkling wine selection. But if you're going to Le Du, you're not looking for the usual mass-produced bottles (of course, they carry some of that as well), you're looking for what no one else carries and you'll probably find something like that here. It is in the middle of nowhere but if you like French wines (who doesn't), this is definitely worth your time finding it. read more

Don't come here looking for scores or pretension, or cheap vino, for that matter. "Honey, we aren't at Trader Joe's Wine Store anymore". Le Du is the best wine store in the city. Sure, their prices may be higher then places like Trader Joes, but each wine is personally selected by the owner. You aren't going to buy an iffy bottle here, every bottle of wine they offer is excellent. It seems that the selection of wines is focused "boutique" wineries from France that you won't find elsewhere in the city. Sure, the wine isn't cheap here but life is too short to drink cheap wine. They offer free wine tastings on the weekend, which is a must. read more

Jean-Luc Le Du, former sommelier at Daniel, owns and runs this wine shop in the far west village near the Hudson. It is a gorgeous shop and worth the trip/ walk from the subway for those who are unfortunate enough to not live nearby. The store's inventory varies from the well-rated usual suspects to the more obscure, smaller producers. There are plenty of wine to discover, so be adventurous. There are often tastings with visiting winemakers and the staff even includes a winemaker or two. So yes, they're knowledgeable. This would be my favorite wine store in the city, but it's not in my usual stomping grounds and requires a special trip over to washington st. read more

Def one of the best wine retailers in NYC -- and worth the trip to the West Side. Just like reading the wine list at a restaurant with a great sommelier is an education so is a trip to Le Dû. You don't to see every bottle of wine from Italy, you see those worth drinking from a perspective you can respect even if you don't agree 100%. Expect service that is smart -- in my case great service was spending an undisturbed 20 minutes looking at wine with an occasional reference to an iPhone App to get insight I like/trust/know. Most wine retailers need to "sell" something - good to see a retailer able to dial that down. Big selection of French wines, pretty big Champagne, and smart selection from everywhere else from what I saw. If you're looking for a $20 California Cab go to Astor, but if you're looking for a great bottle of wine (regardless of price) head West. read more

Often in the big city its the small, independent stores that we love. I happen to work around the corner, and while passing by one day decided to poke my head in. I was greeted by the manager of the store (JP? PJ?), and we spent a solid 20 minutes chatting about wine. I was the only one in the store - so we talked about various wines we liked and what I like to drink (bold reds, please!) and my price range (I usually go for $15-25 bottles to "drink now"). While talking he shows off a few bottles, and each of them had a story about the winemaker and why they chose to sell it. This was much less about trying to make money and much more about a wine seller trying to wade through the thousands of wineries and choose items off the beaten path. We finally settled on Caprandole Rosso Toscano 2009, for $17. I will spare you the drinking notes, lets just say I have been back three times to try more of his suggestions, and different bold reds in my price range. I have yet to be disappointed. read more

Jean-Luc Le Du is a pretty big deal in the wine world. His credentials include former sommelier at Daniel and having been important enough to be invited to Robert Parker's celebratory dinner after he won the French Legion of Honor. The selection is not cheap as he keeps his inventory temperature- controlled. The store isn't the most convenient, as it is at least a 10-minute walk from the Christopher St. 1 stop. And Le-Du's selection skews toward the wines you see on the lists of high-end French gastronomic temples such Daniel and Le Bernardin, which leaves only a small smattering of Spanish, South American, and South African wines. But inevitably you come into Le-Du's store for his impeccable taste in wines. His former sommelier connections allow him access to very small, independent producers; his selection of wines, as a result, is slightly off-beat, a little unexpected, but inevitably carries wines that you'll find at no other store. His collection of Bordeauxs, Burgundies, and Alsatian rieslings floored me. In terms of free wine tastings, Le-Du does the best ones. He doesn't offer the cheap wines that importers are trying to push; these are all wines he or a member of the staff has tasted and appreciated. I attended "Full-Bodied Reds" (the wines, not Christina Hendricks), which included a Sottano Reserva 2008 Malbec, a Carl Roy East Side Cuvee 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, and Monteti 2005 Cab Sav blend, and a Mas d'en Gil "Clos Fontos" 2002 Priorat, which even the least expensive one was far better than almost the best of the wines from other wine store's tastings I've been to. read more

I love this place and everyone in it. These guys know everything. Great service whether you're buying something fancy or something not so much. They never make you feel stupid or cheap. Also, if you get anything here you can be pretty sure it won't disappoint you. They also keep unusual things on hand and are happy to help you find them.
