Note that the prices here are on the higher side and there aren't a ton of options for each liquor type, but if you're not picky and are looking for something convenient in the area, this is the place for you. Also be aware that the larger bottles of liquor are placed on the shelves throughout the store, and the medium and small sized bottles are behind the cashier. I was not aware of this when I came in looking for gin and vermouth and thought I'd have to buy bottles that would last me 10 years. Very friendly service as well; they will not try to upsell you just to make an extra buck.

There are a decent number of wine shops in the FiDi area, but this one is the 2nd closest to the largest subway hub in the city. Despite that, I've never seen the place crowded. Maybe it's because their prices ARE a little high. Or maybe it's because of their customer service. They're not exactly friendly, which goes a long way. They greet you as soon as you come in, but it's in a way that makes you feel watched or rushed. I usually ignore that and just ask them to let me browse until I have a question. That usually works. But it's too bad they aren't as assertive with pan handlers & the like. I stopped into the shop yesterday looking for a bottle of wine to pair with dinner. Shortly after I entered, a guy stumbled in off the street, asking me for money for liquor. He was talking loudly & using the N word a LOT. Did they say one word to him? No. Not until he walked up to the counter and addressed the woman there face to face, asking for booze. Even then, she wasn't as assertive with him as she's been with me over taking whatever wine she's chosen. To make matters worse, there was a male employee in the store who stood several yards away, just watching. I told this desperate beggar who was told me that HE HAD A KNIFE & had just been in a physical altercation with someone, that I had no cash. He responded that I could just put it on my credit card. The staff said nothing in response to that. I had already chosen my first wine & had placed it on the counter for purchase. But now this beggar was hanging out there. I heard the woman passively mutter something about preferring him to do his business outside. But the male employee just stood there watching. I turned to the male employee & asked, "You're OK with this?" He just shrugged. But the beggar loudly stated, "SHE'S OK WITH THIS!" and laughed. So I told the male employee, "Since you won't ask him to leave, I'll leave." I then walked out empty-handed & made my way south to Simply Wine on Liberty Street, where the worst thing that happens there might be an occasional puppy fart. It was out of my way, but so worth it. Their selection & service rock. I have worked with and around alcohol for many years, including my time as a bartender. If you can't control drunks & people begging for booze, if you can't protect or at least show concern for the safety & comfort of your paying customers, you're in the wrong business. This place won't be getting any more of mine.

If I chose to be a customer of this store again I will be making sure to be doing delivery as I do not want to face him again, that's how poor of a person he was to me. I regularly go here to purchase the 5-liter box wines to make my sangrias. The price is $20 flat if you pay in cash. I found this to be the cheapest place in the area where you can get it. The staff is always helpful and won't hesitate to ask if you need assistance. They also deliver, which is very beneficial on those cold/snowy/rainy days when you're running low and do not want to leave the house. I've done some searching around the Chinatown and Lower East Side areas and this place is cheaper than most, plus the prices already include tax. Tip: When you get to the register pay attention to the neon stickers. They usually advertise really good deals of high quality spirits. For example, recently I purchased a 700 ml bottle of European vodka for $8. Wow!

I called the shop to explain the delivery mix-up and they promptly picked it up & gifted us a bottle of bubbly. The next time we were interested in buying wine, we went to the shop to check it out and well the rest is history as they've simply become our preferred store. The tastings are fun, the selection well curated, and the prices very reasonable. The points system is nice perk as it doesn't take forever to accrue a reward so can redeem easily.

After my last trip to Naples, I was hooked and it wasn't so easy to find in NYC (I can't find it anywhere in New Orleans, sadly). Enter West Street Wine. We go way back. When I worked at a bar nearby 5 years ago, this is where I'd stop on the way to work to have my own provisions for the night (the bar I worked at had shitty wine) to share with my good friend, who was also the sound guy. We'd drown our sorrows as we watched whatever shitty band or comedian I had booked on a Tuesday night, not unlike Christ crying over Lucifer's fall from heaven, lending divine fertility to the soil that would later be mixed with ash. Then we'd drink another bottle as we walked home to Brooklyn, all the way from Downtown, through Chinatown and the LES and over the Williamsburg Bridge. Once there, we'd be so sotted that one of us would climb to the top of the damn thing. Which one? Hint: not the one wearing platform boots. THOSE were the days. I stopped in to West Street Wine most recently when staying with my friend who lived in the area, grabbed two or four bottles of Lacryma Christi and relived old memories. A reasonably priced red table wine, West Street charges a fair price, as I've seen it sold for as much as $5 more a bottle elsewhere. I also stopped in here on for my New Year's bottle of Nicolas Feuillatte, also at a good price. I figure they can charge more because it's pretty much the only liquor store in the area. For a bottle of wine $20 or under it's fine. Once I had a last minute birthday request from my husband for "a little bottle of Johnny Walker Blue". I definitely paid the sucker price for the last minute request, and I know where to get is in Brooklyn for a lot cheaper. But since I was in that predicament, I opted to get the special Chinese New Year, Year of the Dragon bottle for $20 extra... which is a work of art and absolutely made my husband's night and he will be talking about for years and years. They do have some special and rare bottles that make for great gifts, but if you have more time to do your research even the rare bottles can be found elsewhere where for significantly cheaper. Oh well, it is what it is. Say, that bottle did not last through the night but at least it was genuinely appreciated with good friends. This liquor store is better than others in the neighborhood, I am glad that they exist.
