Amsterdam has it's share of great restaurants in town. But this non-descript little corner gem is off the tourist radar.
The 6 story building that houses the Hotel School-The Hague, sits outside of the centrum, but welcomes the public to sample student produced work.
After noticing the sign and dining activities from across the street every time we walked by, we inquired about dining on our last night's stay.
We didn't look at the menu, ask about prices or read reviews, but made a 7:00pm reservation anyway, based on our activities that day.
After walking around the entire rainy day, eating, drinking and waking non-stop at Heineken and Van Gogh, we plopped dead tired on our hotel bed at 5:30pm.
Once the dining time rolled around, she suggested to cancel our reservation. I thought...we can just have a few appetizers and a glass of wine, then go back and sleep.
Well, we went and were greeted with such welcome authentic smiles and eager to please students, we decided that a real dinner would be in order.
The setting was really top notch. Students were professional, pleasant, articulate and everything they did was in earnest.
We were toying with what to order but the menu decided for us. There were 9 selections of plates @ €7.50 each, or 4 and 5 course chefs tasting menus that they selected for under €33 per person.
We decided to set the pace and ordered the 5 course menu, seeing that $36 would be the price of a single entree on Maui.
The menu selections, portion sizes and pace of the meal was as professional as any other meal we've eaten at some Michelin starred places.
Wines by the glass were mostly under €4 and many bottles around €19.
We even discovered that they offered 20 hotel rooms, all decorated differently to visitors.
I think if we had a few more nights we would repeat the experience with other service outlets and consider a few nights at the hotel too.
Impressive training with students of different levels at this International School, all taught in English.
