Special Siopao before I sliced it in half
Tony P.

Had lunch here yesterday with family. This Chinese Tea House is located inside Greenhills Shopping Center, San Juan City, Philippines. I ordered their special Siopao and Peking style noodle soup. The meat inside the white bun is hard and bland. You need to put in the sauce to have taste. The Peking style noodle soup with wantons had three PCs of chinese mustard green, 4 pcs of wantons and a scoop of beef, more noodles less soup. It is because the bowl is small. The wonton is bland, too unless you dip it in soy sauce. Same as the noodles, soup and the beef chunks. I put hot oil and soy sauce, then I mixed it to gain taste. Servers are helpful and respectful. Serving is small for the price. Busy place during lunch hours.

Where do I start...every time we're in the Philippines and would visit Greenhills we have to eat at Le Ching.I love their crispy pork and shrimp spring rolls. They are one of a kind...I'm a fan of a spring rolls from Vietnamese,Thai to Filipino and I tell you the one from Le Ching is crazy good.I also love the garlic chili oil that they give you gIr their food.I also like the spareribs and brisket rice.Hold off on the Siopao it's not that good but everything else is delicious.Oh!!!! The staff are really nice too! We're here in the Philippines right now and I'll lookIng fwd to eating at Le Ching one more time before we head back to California :)

We had spareribs rice, chicken ma-chang, hakao, and beancurd rolls. I thought we ordered a lot for 2 persons I was really full after lunch. I was craving ma-chang for the longest time and I'm so glad they have it on the menu. My brother thought it was just okay, nothing special with their food. Considering the price, he thought it was a little pricey for the quality you get .

No matter how many times Greenhills has changed, there are a few places like Le Ching that stood the test of time. This is probably my favorite Chinese budget restaurant when I'm in Greenhills. It's located in the old Shoppesville mall. The restaurant is quite small and made even smaller with the many tables they packed in. Despite it being cramped and old, people still flock to eat their good selection of Chinese food at very reasonable prices. Just grab a table, eat your dimsum or rice toppings and leave with a happy tummy. I've even seen people come in with pots to take home their soup. Carlo and I go here after we've done our shopping or window shopping around Greenhills. Our usual order is the spareribs rice, beef brisket noodle soup, hakaw, and soya milk! I also love their chicken feet and siomai. You always have to take note of the chalkboard. Many of their best sellers go fast during peak hours. Service is also fast here and the staff is very accommodating and efficient. Best to dine here during off peak hours and make sure you check that chalkboard the moment you sit down! Some other table might get the last beef balls of the day!

Here's another restaurant that I've never gotten tired of that's been around since my highschool days. Le Ching was one of my earliest Chinese food experiences. It's where I tasted my first hakao, my first wonton, my first century egg... and it's somewhere I think still holds up today. When I was a kid, I'd actually look forward to exam week because not only did that mean we were on a half day schedule but that also meant we would have to have lunch in Greenhills. Most of the time, that meant Le Ching. So it's probably safe to say I grew up on their noodles and rice bowl meals. But even then... would that mean my recollection of the place is colored with nostalgia? I went back for lunch at Le Ching during a recent Greenhills trip and let me tell you, it still holds up today. There's nothing light about their noodle broth. It's both fragrant and rich and they don't skimp on the toppings either. Beef, wonton, noodles... you really can't go wrong. There's got to be a reason why Greenhills residents and long time Greenhills trippers still consider this a good place to grab a good meal.

One of my most favorite places for Chinese food and one that I frequent is Northpark. I can attest…read morealso that almost everything on the menu is good - except that I'm really sad that they don't have taro puff (I think they should really put that on the menu)! While they have plenty of branches around the metro, my favorite branch would have to be their Lazcano branch in Quezon City. The restaurant is very spacious and is very good for big groups or families. They also have outdoor seating if you prefer to dine without the comforts of air conditioning. The interiors are kept modern with a really pleasant color scheme that's not too painful to the eyes. Their very extensive menu (which is smartly positioned as placemats), stretches from dimsum, noodle soups, steamed rice meals, braised noodles, fried rice, congee, superior soup, signature dishes, hot pot, roast and desserts. To be quite honest, if you're a Northpark first timer, it'll be pretty tough decision making on what to order because there are simply too many options. The stuff I've tried in their dimsum choices is the Fresh Prawn Dumpling, three pieces of beautifully steamed dumplings which is stuffed just right for that one whole bite, and the Pinsec Frito, triangular meat dumplings which are fried to perfect crispiness. Personally, while they don't serve it with mayo, you should dip it in there if you choose to eat it home. Their noodle soups, however, are a class of its own. There's plenty to choose from - wanton, nanking beef, dumpling, pork rib, mushroom - whatever meat selection you are craving for, they have it. Personally though, my favorite would be the Fresh Prawn Dumpling and the Wanton Noodle. The amount of dumplings and wantons is just right for the size of the bowl - and mind you, the bowl comes in two sizes - light and regular. The light sized bowl is okay if you're planning to order other items on the menu without having to be really full by the time you reach the bottom of your bowl; while the Regular sized bowl is enough to make you not want to move right after. What's great also about Northpark is that you can have your pick of noodles with your soup - whole wheat, herb, empress, flat shanghai, canton and hongkong. If you're the type who has to have rice with their meal, order their Lechon Macau over fried rice. Think crispy slices of lightly seasoned pork topped in a bed of yang chow fried rice - it's really filling, delicious and flavorful. Surprisingly, the whole dish can also be shared with a friend so you can have samplers as the serving is pretty large. To top off the meal, I highly recommend their Almond Jelly with Fresh Mango which is served over crushed ice. The dessert is refreshing and the mangoes are always sweet and balances out with the flavors of the almond jelly.

I can't afford eating in Gloria Maris simply because it's a bit steep for my budget and it feels awkward for me to eat in such a huge place where there's no table just for one (or two). Crystal Jade actually brings back memory of a not so distant past. It actually reminds me of the old Chinese restaurants that are on the fine dining side, the plates don't show wear and tear, utensils are properly paired. Hmmmm, taste-wise, food was OK. It was not, "Yummy yehey", it was not bad. Its, well...., food. The serving size isn't big enough to be shared by two hungry people. It's enough to fill the stomach but won't you go bloated. Dumplings were great, though. But the food servers were really attentive. Once someone raises their hands or make the simplest eye contact, they'd rush immediately. That's a + + + for me actually.

In a place like Greenhills Shopping Center where there is a seemingly endless option for about anything, the workout doubles. Good thing I can always rely on Crystal Jade to wipe away my exhaustion and hunger. For a full meal, I usually indulge in an order of their pork xiao long bao. I like their xiao long bao mostly because there's always "juice" inside that is like a burst of happiness inside my mouth. One order has 5 pieces and is just about filling as a snack already. Then another staple with my meals at Crystal Jade would be their noodles with dried shrimp in peanut sauce. The soft noodles are complimented by the texture of the dried shrimp and the sauce itself, which is spicy very much to my delight. For a full meal, half of the snack size is usually enough for me, so I either split it with whoever I'm with, or I have it packed away to take home.

Generally, I find the quality and authenticity of the food here to be excellent. The only criticism…read moreI have (the reason for 4 not 5 stars) is the tendency for some of the dishes to be sweet. Now, that's a personal opinion! I have eaten at two location and each time spent over 1,000 pesos and qualified for the free xia long bao. Other rewards are available but those I am not getting into for they maybe temporary in nature. I have tried two of their specials - the three cup chicken and the sweet spare ribs. The three cup chicken, eaten with white rice, is a great meal by itself. The original recipe calls for three cups of sesame oil, soy sauce and rice vinegar. Cooked with large chunks of ginger and garlic cloves, and basil thrown it, it is a very addictive dish! The sweet spare rib was a bit too sweet for me ( served sprinkled with powdered sugar) it is best eaten I think, if a complementary spicy dish like Kung Pao shrimp. The xia long bao is as good as others - I really enjoyed it when served hot. For vegetables, the standard fare such as spinach, morning glory, and book choy are available. For our choice, we ordered the green beans with ground pork. Salty and spicy, it was a welcome change from the standards. We found the roast duck to be very greasy - we wondered if it was fried not roasted. I would not order it again. We found the service to be attentive but not obtrusive! Definitely will eat here again.
