Just a stone's throw from the Arena and city center of Verona, Le Cantine is a lovely spot to grab lunch or dinner; especially if you're attending an opera at the Arena itself. Like a lot of restaurants in Italy, they charge more to sit outside -- but it's totally worth it. You're immediately charmed by your beautiful surroundings; it's a great spot for people watching. After an afternoon of shopping and exploring Verona, we stopped at Le Cantine for dinner. Though they were pretty packed, the waiters seated us (a group of 6) immediately. Service was impeccable; everyone was extremely gregarious and friendly, even with the language barrier. LOL. Our waiter, Salvatore, was awesome and extremely helpful. For dinner, I had the special of the day: stuffed zucchini and pasta served with a special sauce. Though the portion was small, it was extremely filling. The light flavors of the sauce and pasta also made this dish easy to eat. The pizzas here also seemed extremely popular (with everyone ordering them), so we also ordered one. Though I don't remember what it was called (see photo), it was delicious. The crust was perfect and it was absolutely stuffed with toppings. Mmmm. My dad ordered Spaghetti alle Vongole (Spaghetti with Clams), an Italian specialty, and it tasted like seafood heaven. The flavors in that dish were extremely fresh and tasty. And who could go to Italy without having tiramisu for dessert? Le Cantine's tiramisu is beautiful and tasty -- I could have eaten a tub of that fluffy concoction. Overall, loved it! read more

Le Cantine de l'Arena is a hidden gem right in the heart of the historic centre, known to local but not so much to tourists. It's located in Piazza Bra, overlooking the Arena, the Roman amphitheatre built in the first century that is still in use today and is internationally famous for the large-scale opera performances during the summer months. The restaurant is very beautiful within and outside. It has an outdoor seating area and is organized on two levels. The top level serves a surprisingly good pizza also well priced. While the second level, the brasserie, is inside the building, accessible via stairs. The brasserie has a dedicated small area where live music is performed (mostly blues or jazz), has a full open kitchen and a true wine cellars. The brasserie offers spectacular mouth-watering meat dishes, dazzling cold cuts boards, a typical menus with traditional Veronese recipes such as bigoli (type of pasta), polenta (cornmeal mush) and cheese platters. But there is also a vegetarian menu option in case you should not be into meat. The service is definitely excellent. All the waiters/waitresses I dealt with speak good English, are knowledgeable of their products and know how to provide great table service. Considering that this place is located in the historic centre of Verona, the bill is not excessive especially if compared to the other places nearby. Live music at Le Cantine is the best way to spend a winter evening in Verona. They attract some great acts, a range of styles, both Italian and international jazz. The aperitivo is great value at €15 and gets you a table near the band with a drink and a plate of whatever you like. I guarantee that you won't regret the visit. After taking in the amazing view of the Verona Arena you can stop into Le Cantine and grab a quick amazing pizza pie. The pizzas are about 12 inches wide and plenty of food for a hungry walker/traveler. The house wine was excellent (like where is there a bad glass of wine in Italy) and very reasonable in price. read more

We were in the mood for pizza but wary of the tourist traps. This looked like it could be a tourist trap- with a view of the Arena- but the pizza looked good so we decided to give it a shot, and I'm glad we did! I had the spicy salami with arugala. We had pizza and beer.....and it was absolutely delicious! The service at the outside tables was a bit lacking and hence the 4 stars. This is steps away from the best shopping around-great location. The crust was thick but light and crispy at the same time...the toppings were delicious. I also had a greek salad which was very fresh and large!
