I first discovered Le Café Gourmet when my daughter started at SCAD--she told me it was her favorite lunch spot, and after visiting many times over the past two years, I completely understand why. Tucked away in a quieter part of Savannah, this little café is cozy and welcoming. There are a few sidewalk tables outside, and inside, you'll find stools by the window (perfect for people-watching) along with several small tables. It's a great spot for a quiet coffee break or a casual lunch. The baked goods are absolutely incredible--freshly made every morning and hard to resist. They often have free samples, which is a nice touch. I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered, whether it's a pastry, a croissant sandwich, or a coffee. Most of the staff are SCAD students, and they've always been friendly and helpful. On one visit, I had the chance to chat with the owner, Helen, who is lovely and clearly passionate about what she does. I was amazed to learn that she imports her flour and butter from France, which explains why everything tastes so authentic! Instead of being on hold, the phone was just put down and I listened to people talking in the restaurant for 7 minutes before hanging up. Cutest little coffee shop with the yummiest food! I had the Kevin Special (crepe with Turkey, bacon, spinach, mozzarella, mixed cheese and topped with sour creme) It was SO GOOD and HUGE!! Service was great! They took our order at the counter and brought the food to us. You can see the ladies making the crepes at the window and they are so sweet! There aren't many tables and it wasn't as quiet as other coffee shops, but there were always people coming in and out and it is definitely worth your time to check it out! My dog (Queen Sophie Ann LeBarque) and I went here for breakfast. She rides in a carrier, but you have to order inside, so I did step in with her and ordered. We sat outside. We shared a strawberry crepe. (It was only strawberries and crepe, no whipped cream.) and a bacon, egg and cheese croissant. The croissant was out of this world! I would eat that for breakfast every day if I could! (And not gain weight or have cholesterol issues that is.) I also got two croissants to go for breakfast later in the week. The rum baba was as fresh as could be. The girl at the counter foretold that it would melt in our mouth and it truly did. Lastly, we tried a berry tart that had the freshest fruit possible. Everything was a hit. And the only reason we stopped here in the first place was due to their early opening hours on a Sunday morning. I'm sad to have only tried here on our last day in town, but much like a teen romance, is it not better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all? Ponderous thoughts. This small cafe is nestled near City Market on Montgomery St. When you walk in you will instantly recognize the authentic looking pastries. It's a local favorite so you won't find a ton of tourists fighting in a long line. The only draw back is that it has a small dining room. The line was long and getting the food took quite a while (they did note that they were understaffed so I can't blame them for that part) and once I received the food it was just... Ok. It then took thirty minutes for the gourmet croque, which are pre made, to come out. This should have been crispy, but it was soggy so I can only assume it was microwaved.
