The wines pleased us more than most wine-tastings; we left with a couple of bottles, one of each brand. Two brands served: Purple Cow and VinTyr. The winemakers are husband and wife; she is the vintner for the Purple Cow line, and he is the vintner for VinTyr. As demonstrated by the tastes of the wines, a healthy "coopetition". For a tasting, one can choose 5 or 7 glasses, selecting wines from across both brands. The focus is on reds, though Pinot Noir and some white is in the line-up. Purple Cow focuses on unusual varietals. (We enjoyed hearing about the Marechal Foch grape. And that wine tasted, well, very "Marechal f...f...F...Foch'g" good. Sorry). VinTyr has excellent red blends. They both offer Tempranillo, and we tried both. I preferred Purple Cow. We were very lucky as the Purple Cow winemaker was our server. Was wonderful to learn the background of the brands, the grapes, and even the yeasts. (As well as beefing up our knowledge of the Protestant Reformation. And hearing about the annual "Cowboy Mass" in the nearby town of St. Paul.) The history of the name of Purple Cow is interesting. However, for the personal tastes of my partner and me, the name was a bit too cute and "dairy". (I was raised in Wisconsin, so that might infuse some bias.) "La Vache Violette" would work better for us. On the other hand, I like the name "VinTyr". The dragon design on the label is nifty, but perhaps a bit understated.

The winery is by appointment only, and is so quaint and cozy nestled among the trees on the hillside overlooking the picturesque vineyard that having the intimate tasting experience only enhances the elegance of the wines they produce. The wines range from those from grapes grown on premises to small batches from grapes secured from around the Willamette Valley, the Dales and even Walla walla! The tasting is enhanced by fresh made nibbles that are paired with the wines on the days tasting list. Most of the vintages are produced in sub-100 case batches and are truly cellar worthy. Be sure to add Natalie's to the list for your next wine tour in the valley. It's one you truly don't want to miss!

We were greeted warmly by Kira Teppola, who now carries on the legacy started by her father, founder David Teppola. From the moment she began sharing her family's story -- from her father's early fascination with French wine to his pioneering belief in the Willakenzie Loam soils -- we were captivated. Kira's knowledge of the land, the vines, and the winemaking process was extraordinary. Her enthusiasm was contagious; we hung on every word and felt truly connected to the spirit of Laurel Ridge. Even the family vineyard dog, who was initially a bit cautious, became our friend by the end of the visit! The wines were exceptional. My favorite was the 2017 Barrel Select Pinot Noir, beautifully balanced and expressive of the terroir. We enjoyed it so much we opened a bottle that very night. The next day, I couldn't stop thinking about the bright, refreshing 2023 Sauvignon Blanc, so we went back just to buy more! Kira graciously set us up with a picnic table outside under a heat lamp so we could enjoy lunch overlooking the estate -- and even poured us a little more wine "so we wouldn't get thirsty." This was our last stop on our Sunday trip and the wine and sunset did not disappoint.
