Le BHV Marais belons to the Galeries Lafayette Group and is a high-end department store. I was here for business and took the opportunity to check out the offerings. I loved the assortment selection but was not overly thrilled with the way the store presents itself. They had very few employees around and some areas were very cluttered and not at all welcoming. If you are looking for a nice shopping experience, I would recommend to stick to Galeries Lafayette. read more

In my planning for everything for the trip to Paris, I screwed up cameras and I found out that I had no SD card in the camera I brought with me. Asking the hotel deskman, he told me to go to BHV which was in walking distance from the hotel. I found my way to the electronics area but it seemed like all they sold were micro SD chips with an adapter card. One clerk sent me to another secrtion of the store where he thought they might have the regular sized SDs. They didn't, but I decided to buy the micro card with the adapter. I was told by the clerk that once it was opened it was not returnable. Luckily, everything worked fine and the price was reasonable. Still, it seemed like they were understaffed and didn't know much about electronics. So much for a large department store. read more

I still prefer BHV over the other large department stores in Paris. There are crowds, but not the obnoxious tourist crowds of Lafayette. There isn't the snobbery you can encounter at Printemps or Bon Marche. You can buy a toilet seat here. And underwear. And literally anything and everything for your home from sheets and towels, to furniture and bathroom cabinets. I scored a lovely scarf - the pattern is gorgeous and if you look closely there are some "surprises". Definitely something you won't be seeing in the US! Service is kind as well - my friend bought a present for her husband and they wrapped it beautifully for her. If you are spending less than $175 (for tax refunds), show your passport or driving license to receive 10% off most items! read more

My intention was to get back to Gallerie Lafayette when I next visited Paris. But I ran out of time. Found ourselves near the Pompidou Center and while I was rueful that the days were drawing to an end....I looked up... and saw this magnificent frontage. And wondered... What the heck is a Le BHV Marais? Let me just take a peek..... Because you just never know. Well, well well. Le BHV Marais. You are no consolation prize. You are mighty fine edifice filled with fantastic items to keep me busy for a long, loong long time. Woo. Weeeeee. Oui! And even if they don't say it anymore and it is a cliche... "Oooo La. La" I just don't know where to start. Was it 5 or 6 floors? I never finished. I got caught in my favorite purgatory....art suppllies and stationary and pens. And then caught a whiff of the kitchen department. What a beautiful store. Clean exceptionally well lit and with so many items to just enjoy like a museum of items you can buy. Fantabulous. Magnificent. Superlatives that just pale to the quality and care this shopping experience offers. I could not find a flaw in the quality or content of wares. This is a somewhat overlooked Department store if you are a tourist. Its not flashy like the other big ones but they have a great kitchen/dish-wear/gadgets floor. Some of my favorite thins are their linens, really beautiful and soft linen napkins and table cloths. Worth a stop if you are looking for home goods and gifts, its usually not very crowded, located in a easy to get to location and easy to get in and out of. read more

I may not be the typical tourist. I really liked this department store. It's set up like the classic (American) department stores of old; each floor has different specialties. My favorite is the basement where they have housewares, hardware, tools, electrical supplies, etc. Make no mistake- this is a working department store, not a tourist trap. I stopped by LE BHV MARAIS while in the area. It was a totally different experience from some of the other shopping places I visited such as Printemps Hausmann and Galeries Lafayette. The offerings were more reasonably priced, but that came at the expense of customer service. It was nearly impossible to find someone to assist in certain departments and no one could leave their department for another. It was weird. We decided to leave since we couldn't get assistance in the areas that were needed. read more

As tourists, we were completely overwhelmed by the abundance of shopping in Paris. There are literally stores everywhere. Every district has either a Herald Sqaure or SoHo vibe, or both! In our desperation, we ended up at Le Bazar de l'Hôtel de Ville .. BHV. From the outside, and all the ads, I imagined some kind of Parisian Macy's. I was kind of right, but throw in some magic as well. This place literally has everything. Just the stationary/crafts/gifts department took up almost an entire floor. I just have no words to describe the magic that was their stationary department. We ended doing a lot of our shopping here, and if I go back to Paris, this is probably where i'd go again. We bought things for ourselves as well as gifts. The store has plenty of everything. I did not get to spend too much time in BHV, but it is a nice department store to look around in to check out some of Paris's fashion. If you are from Canada, think Sears or The Bay! The makeup selection is nice, some products are cheap, and some are expensive. For instance, they sell some drugstore makeup here, like Maybelline. It cost 14 euros for a maybelline mascara!! I found that odd! Large selection of perfumes. I have never been so in love with perfumes until I have traveled to Paris! Nice selection of women apparel and accessories. The BHV Rivoli, closed by the Hotel de Ville, with a direct entry by underground, is really worth the visit in detail! At the ground floor is paradise-Yourself, moreover space has been redesigned so that the passages and access to other floors are thin. In the story, there are any, given the space! However, the BHV is particularly ran for household and decoration home. As the information technology department, it is imposing and Apple Sellers are good advice! A year ago, men's fashion has found itself at 36, rue de la glassware, at the foot of cruise ship. A nice store, still more affordable than the Spring and Galeries Lafayette. read more

We stumbled into this amazing department store as we were walking back from visiting an art museum. We ended up going in side and spending several hours. Fun, Fun Fun! If Macys, Target, Home Depot and Victoria's Secret all mated and had a baby... BVH would be the off spring. We ended up buying lots of gifts for family and friends here. My Mom and my sister LOOOOOOVED this BHV. It was very convenient for me because I would drop them off here for hours and they were perfectly content to walk around a stupid department store while I went through the shops in le Marais. By proxy, I also LOVE BHV because it bought me nearly 2 days of personal time on a family vacation. Things they sell here: - cashmere sweaters - charm bracelets - sunglasses - books and dvds - paints (for painting walls and for painting canvasses) - cabinet handles - sandwiches - hammers and drills - luggage - light fixtures - figurines and action figures (a HUGE collection of figurines) - women's clothing The good: - you can drop your mother off here and leave her unattended for hours - you can buy pretty much anything here except men's clothing (there is a different BHV for that) and lumber - the operating hours are longer than most places in Paris - when I paid with my credit card it allowed me to process the transaction in wither Euros or Canadian Dollars, which was cool since I knew the exchange that day and could pick a more favorable option. The bad: - les toilettes are not acceptable - there are 3 stalls in the ladies room for a 7 story department store and they are on the 5th floor. They are dirty and in the landing of the staircase (seriously). - no shoe section. My Mom was devastated. I would shop here again. Especially if I forgot something on a trip to Paris (like a voltage converter or underwear... you could get both here). read more

You would think someone in the blouse department could make the simple conversion to French sizes. Woman #1: "I am sorry, but everything fits different. Can you bring her here?" Not from Chicago. Woman #2: Here's a jacket in size Large. The blouse I want only has numbers. What would the number be if someone bought this jacket? "Do you have a picture of her?" No. No blouse sale. Generally a nice department store with a good selection of items but not a good shopping experience. Unlike every other store of the kind where you can use any till to pay (at least any on the floor you got the products from), here every little "section" has their own till. So you need to disassemble your shopping basket and retrace your steps to find out which area of the floor you got every item from. Beyond exhausting. As everywhere in Paris the staff pretends not to speak English. Figuring you're a dumb tourist they lie to you about what is included in the sales. When in doubt head to BHV. 99.99% of the time they have what you're looking for (unless that thing is a helium tank). Seriously, from obscure handy man stuff to designer lingerie, mattresses and refrigerators, it's hard not to find what you need at BHV, though it's frequently a hell house with everyone and their mother squishing and pushing past you in a mad chaotic scramble to buy whatever they're looking for. I do really love this place, but for some reason the non-intuitive layout seems to bring out the worst in people (which is saying something in Paris!). Just one word of advice, if you have a stroller, factor in an additional hour since you'll have to take the elevator which is the size of a closet and always full. read more

Fun department store. It's expensive but not as bad as Galleries Lafayette. This one is close to my apartment so whenever I need to just walk around a warmer atmosphere than Rue de Rivoli. They have top brand women's clothing, leggings, purses, and make up on the first floor. Other floors have home appliances, shoes, everything you may need for home. The mens is on the same street, across the way, and there is even BHV helmet store around the corner to get your protection gear for the moped! read more

One of my favorite stops for a little snack whenever I have seen my fare of museums or need to rest before hitting up the museums again. You go up and up and up and then there is a restaurant area. For rows and rows and rows, nothing but old French people. No foreigners or few... just a bunch of old French people. Perhaps it is the view that entices them or the lack of tourists, but it is worth it. Inexpensive cafeteria food along with gelato. If you want to save a pretty penny for your shopping and get a nice view of the city, this is worthwhile. If you want to spend all your money on fine dining, then don't go here. read more

The French are so polite!!!! I inquired at a housewares store about finding a "chose qui fait de l'eau chaud," or a thing which makes water hot, since I did not yet know the word for a thermoplongeur. The proprietor informed me that there was a store across from the Hotel de Ville, which would have one. We skeptically, but optimistically, walked in and found a massive subterranean hardware section downstairs, and eventually inquired and learned that what we sought might be on the third floor. We made our way past fashion lingerie, luggage, and housewares to a promising section for travel that had previously held the item, but a search revealed only bare shelves. After inspecting every kind of tea and coffee device, we did find an electric kettle for only 19.00 Euro, and short stint in line, procured my new coffee maker. An hour later, I walked out with a pair of flats (€45), 2 dresses (€65), work jacket (€30), trench coat (€80), and 2 picture frames (€15). I received between 40-50% off each item. This is an absolutely gorgeous store if you're in the midst to stroll through some of the best mid-level retail you'll find outside of Galleries Lafayette. Me? i just needed to get some fans since it had started to warm up and my apartment, still in the throes of winter, was woefully unprepared. Not only did they have the little fan tower I wanted (slim profile), but the clerk spotted me as someone who probably didn't have a car and put both packages in a zip tied carry case for me - awesome. read more

Great department store in Paris just opposite the Hotel de Ville. The store is actually spread over 2 or 3 blocks of the Marais district, with a seperate men's fashion store (BHV Homme), cafe etc etc. Whilst not as upmarket as Galleries Lafyette, Aux Printemps, Le Bon Marche etc, it is slightly cheaper. Others have compared it to BHS or Debenhams but with such a massive and varied range of goods on offer, I'd liken it to one of John Lewis' bigger stores with a CD/DVD and book store plus Waitrose thrown in. For one thing, Parisians seem to love it - you tend to see people with BHV carrier bags everywhere BHV Homme is more like House of Fraser with four floors of top designer clothing ranging from average to high end prices. Good place to pick up that seemingly de rigeur item for Parisian males - the man bag. read more

You can find almost anything you would ever need in BHV - and if you're an American who speaks only rudimentary French who needs to buy light bulbs, this is where you should go. The staff are incredibly helpful, even with language barriers (anyone who says the French are rude probably assunes that they all speak English and refuses to even try to communicate any other way). I always stop in to get fun gifts to being back, and have even thrown a bathroom fixture or two into the mix. read more

BHV is a medium sized Parisean department store. It seemed to have the obligatory handbags, womens' fashion on the ground floor, homewares on the middle floors, and technology at the top (why is that the model for almost all stores?). The Nintendo games area is great as it has lots of games that the UK is out of e.g. Wii fit, mario kart for wii and they are cheaper than England! The ground floor is currently being renovated so beware the builders and construction. read more
