They first introduced the idea of a place with fixed prices and no haggling, which was an intense concept for folks in the 1800s. Pass forward to modern days, I'm not sure if it's still a good deal, because now it is a department store of luxury goods. They have designer fashion, accessories and beauty, home and design and an epic food hall. I'm not into the shopping but I was here to admire the architecture since there was parts of their glass and ironwork done by Gustave Eiffel. This is an amazing shop! (Think they are now owned by LVMH)... it's like a tourist pilgrimage... for their shopping to bring French goods home. Butter, pate, cookies and spices... just overwhelming, in a good way. Le Bon Marche is neatly organized, and easy to follow the flow. The variety of offerings is amazing. Truffle salt! Cookies! Mustard! Butter! There are price friendly items and some expensive items, so really something for everyone. My only regret is - not knowing what I am allow to bring back to the states. Trying to ask someone for help was challenging and difficult. I said "Bonjour. Parlez Vous Anglais"... absolutely, no one bother to help. Compared to my experience at Galleries de Lafayette... the gentleman was knowledgeable and super helpful. So, for easy to find items - it's here at Le Bon Marche. This department store is the oldest in Paris. It's in a grand old building with lots of detail on the inside and outside. It has mostly luxury goods, but there are definitely some items you can buy that are more reasonable for souvenirs. Of course the service is excellent. They do pop-ups throughout the year when we were there it happened to be a dog pop up. They had a dog boutique on the first floor with the chandelier made of dog bones. The elevators look like giant bones, each floor had its own dog boutique, and there was a puppy Cafe an artist that could draw your dog, specialty collars, and lots of other fun stuff read more

Tourists shop at Galeries Lafayette and Printemps; locals (at least the rich ones) shop at Le Bon Marché, which has a much calmer, more elegant feel than the slightly tacky Boulevard Haussmann megamagasins. The merchandise is more carefully curated, as well. But then, what else would one expect from a department store owned by LVMH? This establishment has just about everything one could possibly desire, fashion, food, home decor etc etc. We go and stock up our refrigerator every time we are in Paris. Bon Marche is equivalent to something like Saks - high end, items are beautifully displayed and it's WAY less insane than Galeries Lafayette. I stopped in during "Les soldes" (winter sales) and indeed there were sales. Don't expect to score on super high end stuff like Dior, YSL etc. The bargains are on French designers like Maje, Sezane etc. Most sale items were 20-50% off abd if you spend more than $100 you can claim tax refund if you're in the US. I assure you, if you're shopping here you'll exceed that so bring your passport. Lovely staff and service too. read more

I have tended to come to Le Bon Marché when I have visitors coming from the States who want to do some shopping in Paris. One of my good guy friends in particular loves coming here a few times during each of his annual trips to Paris to refresh his wardrobe. For menswear there is a good selection of brands that are perhaps less accessible in some parts of the States; my friend's favorites included Balibaras, Octobre and Magnanni for shoes. The prices are definitely up there so it's more of a special treat kind of shopping experience. I find the layout, atmosphere and service to be more pleasant here than at some other department stores (such as Galeries Lafayette). The staff are very helpful and professional, and by and large speak English fluently. It's a beautiful space to walk around and if you find yourself waiting on people who are more invested in shopping than yourself, there is free WiFi if you really need to pass some time. On a 24 hr layover in Paris, Le Bon Marche was really the only place my wife wanted to hit up to pick up stuff to bring home. Although we did end up buying a few knick knacks our main goal was food items so we hit up the food hall to pick up things like butter and cheese which could be vacuum sealed, cookies, spreads, and other canned and jarred goods, and then just a few other desserts from the various specialty stall. Now Le Bon Marche probably isnt the cheapest place to get these items but since we had limited time in Paris on our 24 hr layover, it was the best place to get everything done in one shot. read more

This was only 2 blocks from where I was staying with a friend. I mostly went to purchase food. I'm told the prices here are much higher than elsewhere in Paris. When I asked if it was comparable to Whole Foods back home, I was told more expensive. But coming from San Francisco, I was fine with the prices. You know what I loved about Le Bon Marche? Their self checkout machines. I brought euros with me and often needed to break the 100 or 50 bills because the smaller shops couldn't handle large bills. Voila! Pick up some baguettes or tarfuto salami, and got change for my large bills. read more

To quote our wine trip driver, "Galeries Lafayette is for the tourists, but Le Bon Marché is for the Parisians." So with that being said, I decided to check the place out. Having been to the cluster fuck that it Galeries Lafayette, it was a welcome surprise to not see massive crowds at LBM. All of the big fashion names had their own boutiques and there was makeup and fragrances for days. As far as men's apparel goes, there wasn't too many brands that couldn't be found stateside, but it was still work perusing. Having just eaten, I didn't give the market section of the store the attention that it deserved. An elegant high scale department score. It has less tourists than the GL. No lines for handbags here, and I hope it can stay this way. The most impressive thing for me in this department store is their supermarket. Do not miss it! I think it's in the building next door to all the handbags, I am not 100 percent sure. From wine, cheese, chocolate, to French bread, salads, cold dishes, pies, and deserts. I wanted to try them all. However, due to limited time and not having a kitchen in our hotel, my husband and I only tired their beautiful deserts. When I die bury me inside of Le Bon Marche. The best department store I've been to probably in my life. The vibe is very upbeat and lively. It's like a Saks or a Neiman Marcus, but better. I was there around Christmas and the decorations were unreal beautiful. I was lucky enough to be able to buy a Chanel bag here from their small Chanel boutique and the service was unreal. While they didn't have the biggest selection, this was the best service I've ever had at a Chanel boutique and I have been to MANY. Even outside of the Chanel boutique every employee that I came into contact with was so incredibly kind and helpful. The VAT refund situation is all handled on the 3rd floor by the elevator. They are very quick and make everything incredibly easy. I can't wait to go back to Paris and return to Le Bon Marche! read more

Looking for high end shopping without the chaos in Galeries Lafayette, this place is for you. It has all the brands with the leisure of not having to wait in line or bumping into people to people. It might just be me, but feel like the staff is more relaxed and not as pushy like in Lafayette as well. It's a bit smaller than Lafayette, but has all the necessities. Tax free claim is also within the building, I believe on thrid floor by taking the elevator was the easiest route so it has its convenience as well. Afterwards, hit up the market, La grande epicerie, adjacent to the bon marche for a snack and pick up souvenirs. Perfect duo. read more

Oh man - what an amazing department store. I have been in all kinds of retail operations, and this is a very high-end store ... on par with say Harrods in London or the flagship Saks in New York. It is absolutely lovely from start to finish. Since we were there at Christmas, it was decorated to the nines with Christmas trees, festive lights and beautifully classy accents. Everyone who worked there was pleasant and helpful - they would immediately answer any question or drop everything to assist you. I had a grand time looking through some of the fashions (and a less grand time wincing at the price tags). I also was super intrigued by the atelier workshops throughout the store. For instance, in the denim area, there was a glassed-in workshop area where craftsmen and women would customize your jeans any way you like - with the exact hardware of your choosing. It was amazing since everything in America is so mass produced. Le Bon Marche was also very helpful to us as there is a currency exchange office on the top floor. Handy to know. At any rate, if you need a place to shop for yourself or shop for some really primo souvenirs, this would be a great stop. Or hell, just pretend your rich and walk around. It's super fun! read more

Same place (on the 3rd floor) takes care of VAT refunds. Service is very quick. + MARKETPLACE They have a marketplace very similar to Whole Foods, but fancier. Really loved the fromagerie and charcuterie sections. The fresh bread from their bakery was also phenomenal. They have a great wine selection. We picked up bottles of Bordeaux just about every night. They also have a variety of chef tables around the marketplace to enjoy delicious meals made fresh with their high quality meat, seafood, etc. A great mix of tourists and locals. The vibe is very upbeat and lively. We were there late-October early-November when the Christmas decorations started to go up and it was fabulous.
