i want to start by prefacing that i have been going here since i was little. i am 18 now and as long as i can remember i have been going to this bakery with my dad and i've always loved it. when i was little i would refer to the owner as "the soup man" because everyday he makes two delicious soups from scratch! anytime i got sick i would ask for soup from this bakery specifically. it is not only such a wonderful and core part of my childhood, but it is well priced, quality and delicious food that makes you feel even better just knowing you're supporting the owner and his small business. he's a wonderful man who has given me lots of great advice over the years. i'm terrified for him to retire / go out of business because of how much i would miss his soup. Authentic Mediterranean food made with love from a Lebanese perspective. Good service and free lively banter from the man behind the counter. Post-Covid they went take-out only, so order ahead, though you can order there. They make two soups (one meat-based, and one vegetarian - sometimes vegan) and several cold salads M-F, have their own delicious falafel recipe that won't be what many may be used to, and there are always at least 4-5 types of baklava available. This is a tiny, homey space with no eat in capacity, but in the warmer months there is plenty of outdoor seating available. We've been eating here for years, and they treat us like family. My wife and dined here after hearing they were a Top 10 restaurant in CT for a budget priced meal. We tried and were "amazed" at the food and the service. The building exterior is very modest, but wait until you get inside. The food aromas are enticing and mouth watering. I had the shawarma and it was amazing. My wife ordered a savory beet soup was also amazing. We shared a pita pizza with spinach, feta, olive oil and garlic. Wow! We dined outside on a stone patio seated at modest metal furniture, and could hear the Yantic River nearby. We finally decided to try dessert with a variety of baclava made by the Lebanese owner and his wife. The rose water infused baclava was the best we've "ever" eaten. Customers of mine have been telling me about this place. It is 100% a hidden gem. Finally got the chance to stop in with my husband. We got lunch for takeout. We both got sandwiches. A box of cookies. A fun selection of flavors. We also got a small container up housemaid tabbouleh. They were out of the orzo salad the ingredients sounded amazing. Next time. Couple of the sandwiches take some time because they have to took the ingredients and put the sandwich together. Not a big deal we enjoyed chatting with the owner his wife was in the back making our delicious sandwiches. It have a cute outdoor dining area. We will definitely be stopping back here. Lazizah's Bakery is a Norwich staple. Tucked away on Yantic road, right off of Rt 2 and near the Rt 2 on ramp is Lazizah bakery. They offer different types of sandwiches (you can order ahead if you're in a hurry) and they offer a number of breads and sweets and have a small store filled with specialty and import spices, olives, cheese and yogurts, condiments, sauces, and jams. When I stopped the other day, I had to get the falafel sandwich as well as all types of baklava. The baklava is rich, sweet and so flavorful! What a delightful find. A little bakery/restaurant/grocery shop in a quiet, historical corner of Norwich. The food is excellent. A lot of vegetarian and non-vegetarian middle-eastern selections. We had the hummus and baba ganooj wraps and a couple of pieces of backlava. Fresh, tasty and great. The shop is very small with no indoor dining, but they have a charming patio that overlooks the Yantic River where we could enjoy lunch. On top of the food and the ambiance, the owners are charming. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, although the location is lovely. It has several tables set off to the side, just above the river. The inside isn't much better looking than the outside, but focus your eyes on the glass display filled with some of the most delicious treats you will ever taste. The restaurant offers a wonderful selection of authentic dishes and desserts to entice and please any pallet. Just be ready to make some very tough decisions when deciding what to order. read more

Over the last couple of years, the bakery has literally given up on making dishes. The place looks run down and has little inventory.

There is literally no reason people have ranked this place so highly other than total ignorance of middle eastern food and culture, or perhaps pity. Lazizah is in a derelict corner of Norwich and is a total mess. It isn't even really a restaurant, more of a forgotten storefront that sells MSG/preservative laden dry pack seasonings and bottles of spices. No fresh Arabic foods in sight. The dust, clutter and filth is completely off-putting and unprofessional, and brings back bad memories of being in an old single wide trailer. There is literally no indoor seating so it is 100% to-go or you can eat outside. It's amazing this place hasn't been outright shut down by the health department. It took a lot for me to not turn around and walk out. Now, to the food. It was slapdash and an insult to Arabic cuisine, slowly heated in an old counter top toaster oven. The "gyro" had weird, unorthodox meat which completely missed the mark, and was packed full of onions; the kind that have been sliced and refrigerated so they're extra harsh, as well as sour. It was like reheated leftovers, not restaurant food. The meat was never anywhere near a spit nor sliced from a block as many restaurants do it; it was more like hand cut bits of steak cooked to death. The baba ghanoush sold in to-go containers was unusually flavored with pomegranate molasses, which makes it oddly sweet and sour, unlike any I've ever tasted. I got sick after eating it. For those who are wondering, I must inform you, I have eaten at many Syrian, Egyptian, Turkish, Lebanese, Persian and Yemeni restaurants and food trucks across the country. I have a rich basis of comparison. Now, to the service. The elderly man working there made numerous rude and unacceptable remarks that are not funny or appropriate for clientele, including insulting remarks on religion. To summarize, literally no other middle eastern restaurant I've ever eaten at was this bad or run so unprofessionally. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. I look forward to the day Norwich gets a real middle eastern restaurant, but until that wondrous day, I will never come back to Lazizah! If I want middle eastern food I will sadly have to drive an hour to the Providence, Boston or Hartford metros, where there are high quality options. If for some reason you liked this place, you should make the pilgrimage yourself to gain some perspective and taste! read more

Other reviewers have this right. This place is absolutely legitimate. The flavors are amazing. The owners are awesome, and hilarious. I love every interaction I've had with them. They will deliver to my office, but picking up from there is also very convenient. They have specials every day on their facebook page. Always check there before ordering. Some of the specials are really just the best and worth ordering. The desserts are phenomenal. Fresh baked daily. It's really hard not to over order here, as it all looks and is SO good! read more

Traveling home we found this little gem of a shop. Ordered 2 falafel and they were delicious! Picked up some pita chips, tabbouleh, and babaghannuj they might be the best I've ever had. You could tell the food is homemade fresh and tasty . The owner was such a pleasure to talk with this will be a stop for us anytime we come by the area. Delicious and authentic Middle Eastern foods. There is a patio during the summertime along the river. I was here during the winter time so did not get nearly as much of the charm as this little Germanic neighborhood lost in time offers. It's worth it to come here just to check out the buildings surrounding it and the beautiful bridge adjacent to the building. I must say it was the best falafel I've had in a long time. Delightful little roadside restaurant with a most amusing proprietor who provides lively commentary while making truly delicious food. I had the beef gyro, which was the best I have ever had. Truly wonderful flavors and spices. The chocolate baklava was to die for. My daughter had the vegetarian wrap, and thought it was excellent. It's necessary to order falafel in 30 minutes in advance so we didn't get to try that, but enjoyed our food. There are little tables outside and I'd definitely return for more of this wonderful and very reasonably priced food. read more

The owner is the nicest man ever! I am staying at a hotel in Norwich on business and was tired and figured I would order in.I found this place on yelp, called, the owner picked up and I asked for a menu. In his very thick accent he basically asked me what I wanted and he will make me whatever he can with what he has so I told him things I liked and didn't like and i was going to be surprised. I found out they closed 45 mins before I called and he said it didnt matter that I am guest in his city and he wants me to enjoy my stay; I begged him to reconsider but he insisted. 20 mins later he shows up to my door with a big smile, puréed pumpkin black bean soup, white bean salad and potato salad. He is such a genuinely sweet and considerate man. The food is AMAZING! Incredibly authentic and fresh. I will be going back tomorrow to get more food. I hope his business grows and flourishes because there are not enough small businesses out there like this one anymore! read more

Good chicken gyro and tortellini soup, though I wish they had a cup and not just a pint of it. The experience was a bit strange so that may deter me from coming back. The older man working there, possibly the owner, has a very strong personality that may be off putting to some. I am all for chit chatting but I don't expect a carry out order to turn into a 15-20 minute lecture on life. I got there 10-15 minutes after calling and my order had not even been started, despite no other customers being there. He also stopped in the middle of putting my order together to ring up a friend of his who came in to buy something. Apparently he thought I had nowhere to be that day, despite me calling in a carry out because I did have to be somewhere. He is nice and well meaning but it was a bit much read more

I discovered this place by accident and a wrong turn into the village of Yantic. Good for me !!!!! The place is very little, and there is massive construction around it. Don't let you be scared off by that... I had a special lamb kabob/pit wrap. I also had to sample the three different types of baklava they had. It was very good. I will take my son & mom there, as they are lamb and middleastern food lovers. They also have a mini food market as well. lazizah is the definition of a hidden gem; if i hadn't been told about it by a friend, it's likely i never would have come across it on my own. the owner is super friendly and will gladly talk your ear off, but in the best way! their gyros are delicious and i have yet to come across better hummus and pita. whether you're in the area or just passing through, i definitely recommend stopping in! read more

This place is as unpretentious as it gets, and the owner makes sure you understand you're in food place that is authentic. He is quite the character, and makes you feel like he's your long-lost uncle from the Middle East. I walked in and told him it was my first time, and he ensured me that it wouldn't be my last. I ordered the falafel, along with the babaganoush, and both were delicious. The babaganoush had a smoky flavor to it, which I never tasted before in that dish, and the owner said it was the "real way to make it", and I didn't argue because it was yummy. The falafel was crispy and full of spices, but it would've been nice to have some more of the tatziki to go with it. I was too full for baklava, but that's on my agenda for my next trip....which will be soon. Prices were reasonable for "authentic" Mediterranean food. read more

I love this place. The owner is funny and friendly the cook delightful and delicious. Whenever I am in the area I stopped in for their black bean burger. Which has goat cheese and pesto so it is not 100% vegan. They have many other vegan choices Falafel pita baba ganoush pita.
