This is a small Middle Eastern market off the main drag heading west out of Norwich, down in the tiny villa of Yantic. Now some disclosure is in order. I'm Syrian, and I immediately hit it off with the owner, Baseem. But the food matches the hospitality. I purchased zatar, baklava, mujadarra, twisted cheese and some tabbouleh. All were fresh and superb. This will be a regular pit stop whenever I'm in the area. Don't expect haute decor or comfortable seating - this is a traditional old market, just like the ones you see in ethnic neighborhoods in many of America's medium and small cities. I came here about two years ago, but never reviewed. The experience was so bad that all this time I still remember it. That has to say something. I had heard such good things about this place. I ordered the falafel, and while I waited I checked out the store. I noticed the equipment was very dirty and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in quite a while. After the food was ready I left, and ate after arriving at my destination. The falafel was disgusting. It was bone dry and I was choking trying to get it down. It tasted completely of spices. I love spices. But this was all spices. I had to throw the rest away. I haven't had falafel before that or since, but I can't imagine it's supposed to be a dry spice filled crumbly patty. Even now talking about it I'm getting nauseous. I just can't bring myself to go back, even if people tell me the lady makes the most amazing soups. I guess you can have my share. read more

I adore this bakery. First discovered them at the Bozrah Farmers Market and when I discovered they were 2 minutes from my house, I finally knew we picked the right house to buy. A gem! My wife, three month old and I literally stumbled into this place. Greeted warmly even though they were closing, the owners made us healthy, wonderful schwarmas. Beef and chicken. Capped the lunch with amazing baklava and a chocolate covered ginger man. Perfection. Set in a beautiful spot next to a great stone bridge above an energetic creek. Great setting right on the Yantic River. We sat outside on the patio with a view of the river and had garlic chicken and falafel wraps. Both were the tops! Strange unique little village Yantic... Strange for it feels a little like a ghost town with abandoned post office, mill and strip club called "Juicys". Beautiful church in the center of town and you should bring your dog with you there is a nice little park right along the river next to fire station to let your dog run. The soups are better than anything I tried in Amman and the shwarma was the equal of any that I have tried in Cairo or Tel Aviv. If you are going on a long trip, stop by Lazizah Bake Shop when the baguettes are coming out of the oven. Don't bother to put any condiments on the bread. Yelp never lets me down! I was driving through the area and looking for a good place to get a snack, and I'm so glad I checked reviews and stopped here. I didn't try any of their lunch items (a mistake!) but I did have three varieties of amazing baklava. Seriously, if you love baklava, check this place out. There were even more styles that I didn't try. Out of the Greek, Lebanese, and Turkish kinds, my favorites were the Lebanese (rosewater, yum) and Turkish (packed with cinnamon). The food is fresh, wonderful & has a unique twist - maybe that's the fresh part. I have never had hummus like this before. Home made soup specials daily seem to be a big hit but I couldn't pass up the shawarma - simple but amazing! The owners are personable, welcoming & helpful if you aren't quite sure what to order. The indoor seating is pretty limited but I noticed a lot of takeout traffic when I was there. They are expanding their outdoor dining area which should be lovely in the spring, summer & fall - right next to a river, not sure which one. What an amazing experience, meeting Basseem. The only thing better was the food. This was the best falafel I've ever had. The freshly made butternut squash was gorgeous. They have 4 kinds of baklava! The two I had were Greek and Lebanese, both delicious. This is a hidden gem, right near Norwichtown. I would eat here every day if I could! An experience to say the least. Wasn't sure what to expect after reading Yelp reviews. Basically, it's about 2/3 bakery and 1/3 food. Bread that I tried was very good, baklava in various flavors is very good, other offerings looked good as well. I was focused on the food and I have mixed feelings. The items available were limited, no lamb, some salads were sold out, and other items were certainly good, but not memorable.Being "sold out" by 2 p.m. speaks well for the demand, but left me with limited choices. My favorite was the tabouleh which rates among the best I've had. The chicken kabob strips in a salad were not kabobs as I expected. Unfortunately, I wanted to experience more, but choices were limited. The humus and babaganoush were very good upon tasting, but not remarkable based on others I've enjoyed. The best comments I can offer relates to the owners who are amazing............wonderful, nice, and just heart warming. Wonderful people who make Lazizah shine. The comments about the food are not negatives. I enjoyed what I ordered, but I was disappointed that the selection was limited at the time of my visit. Lazizah Bakery can be easily missed. It's tucked away in Yantic by the Yantic River, but it's only a few minutes from 395. Most items are made in house and are delicious. The falafel is not too oily and loaded with parsley. Toppings include pickled turnip and a delicious Lebanese tahine. The baklava are delicious, as one reviewer mentioned, and are made in house. Another reviewer made a comparison with Saeeds in New London. I give the nod to Lazizah. True Saeeds is bigger. You can find interesting gourmet grocery items as well as the best packaged Turkish coffee-Mehmet Effendi- at Saeeds, but the falafel, chicken,baklava, bread and spinach pie are better at Lazizah. 5 stars does not do this place justice. I am obsessed with Lazizah's, mostly for the soup and salad of the day. There is no other healthy lunch you can snag this fast that is this good. You'll get a Big Mediterranean welcome when you walk in, as garlic scents waft in to your nose. The falafels are nice and homemade, not the dense frozen ones you'll get at most places. But it's all about the soup. You must see which 2 soups of the day appeals to you and get it; there is no bad options. Best ones are curried carrot, ZIPPY chicken, and chicken pot pie in my opinion. Bring cash! I eat lunch here three times a week, and am sad on days when I'm not driving down route 2 and have to eat something else. read more

Lazizah is one of those little hide-away places that the locals know of and love. Their primary focus was on mediterranian food (falafel, gyros etc) but they have also recently expanded their menu. I am a faithful regular of their restaurant and adore it. Bassam and his wife are always friendly and welcoming. The food is freshly prepared, hand made and delicious. I have never been disappointed in the quality of the soups or sandwiches that you can get there. My personal favorite is the garlic chicken wrap (bring breath mints for after for it is very very garlicy!) though their black bean burger with goat cheese on a fresh baked ciabatta roll is also incredibly tasty. Their desserts and fresh baked breads are delicious! I love their garlic bread, or the baguette with sea salt! Also the Baklavah, several different varieties and is the best around in my opinion! I highly recommend this as a place for anyone to come try and enjoy. If possible, I'd also suggest calling ahead to place your order as the place can get very busy around the lunch hour. They also deliver locally to Norwich and cater! All in all a very enjoyable positive experience every time I go there. It also has a small market of sorts carrying ethnic items such as herbs, spices, Labneh , grape leaves etc. And now since its creeping on towards summer they also have a gorgeous stone patio to sit out on overlooking a lovely stream. The lovely Lebanese couple who run this bake shop are quick to make any customer feel like a part of the family. The food is always prepared fresh to order if you want a meal to eat there or on the go. The falafel is a sure shot, the taste brings you right to the middle east with one bite. The bakery portion of this establishment is also highly enjoyable. I personally recommend their fresh baked garlic bread which should be enjoyed within a couple days or frozen because its completely natural so it doesn't last long. They also retail a decent selection of ethnic odds, ends, and foodstuffs as well as some local products like the farmers cow. For deserts the baklava is excellently rendered with orange blossom and rosewater notes. Don't be fooled by the size of the shop because the hospitality provided here could easily occupy a shop many times the size. They should do well for many years so stop by if you're ever in the area and enjoy this local treasure. read more
