Lazar Chocolate's Dark Chocolate Covered Molasses Sponge--never seen a drizzle on a sponge before!
    Candy G.

I visited Lazar's Chocolate this weekend and it is stillll deeeelicious as ever with all your favorite dipped chocolates and other candy shop offerings! Quick and friendly service unlike a recent experience i had! The store really is a feast for the eyes (and your tummy, of course) because there's so much to choose from! And even though it's summer, they have their regular hours and the chocolate is pristine! Check out my photos of my forever favorite, molasses sponges. They're hard to find and Lazar's happens to dip with a pretty thick covering of chocolate; note the sides of the candy! They even did a drizzle on top which is different than all other sponges I've had...and I've had a lot over the years. Typically a chocolate sponge is not as thickly dipped and smooth. With Lazar's sponge, you could actually spend a bit of time biting/sucking off the chocolate, but who can do that? You've gotta put the whole thing in your mouth at once, it's too good to wait! And if you're a chocolate chip cookie lover as I am, and a Tate's one at that, they even do chocolate dipped Tate's...shouldn't be legal!!!

The plates they came in were pretty, too. You'll find ideas for gifts for others and treats for yourself, too. The prices are high for the amount you get (the plates were the size of my hand but over $30) so you might not enjoy the bill, but they're delicious and presentation is a 10/10.

Tons of pre-made baskets sure to wow anyone you bring them too. Covered marshmallows, pretzels. Now more basic dipped pretzels, where once they were a bit more extravagant looking. They are in a far easier to find location right on Middle Neck Road In the village of Great Neck. It's an easy place to go to and take a nice stroll, have lunch and enjoy a bit of time when there. This was once a favorite place of mine years back and now looks even nicer. Prices very reasonable for the location and quality Tried a few items, was not sure the chocolate was the same flavor I remembered. Used to be darker milk than some and a stronger flavor. Now a bit softer and seemed more like a craft shop flavor. Not sure. Would try again or ask the owner if the same recipe..

Found this cute Filipino dessert shop on social media and it did not disappoint. Like their page…read moredescribes, their menu changes constantly so they didn't have some of the items I had seen online (was hoping for the pandesal bread pudding and the ube crinkle cookie), but there were so many other mouthwatering things. The ube basque cheesecake was smooth and rich, but not as potent of an ube flavor as I would've expected. IMO the standout was the passionfruit donut. It reminded me so much of a malasada. The dough was perfectly light and airy and paired perfectly with the tart passionfruit filling. I also picked up their pandesal (that was still warm!) which was baked to perfection and was just slightly sweet. I saw online that the head baker previously did pastry and Michelin restaurants and it really showed. All the bakes were so well done and the flavors weren't overly sweet. I can't wait to go back to try more!

The inside of the shop looked super cute and cozy on the front side. The back is very much a wide-open kitchen, and it was interesting to watch them work on the pastries as soon as I walked in. Alas it was the end of the day, right before 5pm, so I didn't see any cookies left in the display case. However I am a sucker for basque style cheesecakes. So I purchased a small ube cheesecake and a bibingka cheesecake. If it wasn't so late in the day, I would have wanted to try one of their deliciously flavored drinks as well! The cakes were very moist and not crumbly at all, as basque cheesecake can sometimes turn. I did appreciate that there's a little bit of that creamy gooey center but the rest of the cake held good structure without loosing airiness. I did like the ube one better, but the salted egg yolk and the overall flavor of the bibingka cheesecake was so unique. I will visit again, hopefully earlier in the day, to catch some of the best textured chocolate crinkle cookie I've ever had and one of the Filipino-inspired drinks!
