It's funny. Lyman's has been around as long as I can recall, but I never had any need of such stuff until recently when at my wits end in failing to locate an old style vanity for a bathroom rehab, a friend suggested Layman's. Yeah, I know - maybe I'll give it a try.
I called and spoke to a very nice lady - "Georgia". She knew she had a Victorian-style cabinet and if I called back the next morning, would have the dimensions. I called the next morning and Georgia recalled my name and had the dimensions as promised. Since it sounded promising, and they are open on Sat, I headed down to see the cabinet.
Now understand I had been to all of the big box retailers and was so beat down I was ready to spend pretty much whatever it would take. I gave my number to the "designer" at the Curlew Home Depot and she promised to call. No call. Plan B - Layman's, which I now know should most definitely have been my plan A.
I arrived and Georgia called me by name. I looked the cabinet over very carefully and determined it would work. I asked about an old time toilet and bang - there was a like-new "Kohler Memoirs Stately" - the exact toilet I had looked at on the Kohler website, but at 1/3 the cost.
A chrome towel bar, a chrome Kohler toilet paper hanger, a chrome door knob you push in to lock - old school for sure. Georgia led me around. She knows what she has and where it is. We talked - have a good bit in common.
Think garage sale of "biblical" proportions with a proprietor that knows a lot about what she is selling and the more you buy - the cheaper it gets. Georgia is a small business owner and like myself, cares more about who she is doing business with than the money. Treat her right and she'll treat you right.
I got better service at Layman's than I did at HD or Lowes and by "better", I mean night and day. I also found everything I needed in one place at about 1/5 (overall) the cost of new - all in a matter of maybe 50 minutes. Yes, some sanding and painting will be involved, but at least I found the right item(s) and, I saved a lot of dough ray me in the process.
All in all I found Layman's to be a fantastic resource and Georgia to be a wonderful proprietor. The box box stores can kiss my grits! read more
