I hate to say it. He is a really nice man and i appreciate that he was once a good doctor. The picture above is clearly very dated. Husband and I just saw him together at same time and he was slow and bumbling. Worse, we both needed little things frozen off and, well, he missed. Hubby is still nursing his wound days later. Also, took many days and repeat calls to get the office to send our prescriptions to pharmacy. We had specifically asked them to ensure they were covered by insurance or to recommend alternatives . There were three, none of which were covered and were hundreds of dollars. We have been calling for days and no return calls. We are now looking for another doctor and will have to start over. I typically stay within the UCLA network for all med needs. My internist is superb. But for some reason, dermatologist churn is high there -- even pre Covid. I sought out a local skin care doc to do the annual check up. Reviews for Dr Matt were good, he's close to my residence & they could accommodate within days. All good. But best was the session: comprehensive, knowledgeable and un-rushed (what a concept). Last, despite certain negative reviews which mentioned a rude front desk - they were, in fact, efficient and professional. And that there was a lot of upsetting... there was none. From the first phone call to the attentive, competent staff, to the stress-free checkin, then appointment with Dr. Matt was flawless. My experience with this "doctor" was appalling. Long story, short - Not only did he misdiagnose me (like not even in the ballpark), he spent more time trying to upsell me on skin proceedures and prescriptions for retinol than actually paying attention to the fact that he was erroneously mistaking a severe allergic reaction for eczema. The samples that he tucked into my hand like he was really doing me a favor turned out to be filled with just the stuff i was having the allergic reaction to all around my eye area. (But i found this out later - and no thanks to him). I suppose if you want some kind of cosmetic thingy done to you - he could be ok. But i think this one has long ago forgotten any real doctoring he ever did - if he ever did. Stay away. He caused me an extra 3 months of trauma on top of my distressed skin condition because he couldnt be bothered to get it right. I'd also like to mention, that 2 doctors in the US (one an ER doctor and this one) both got it horribly wrong. 2 Doctors in Australia (where i travelled to visit Mother in a sad funk) got it incredibly right (within 30 seconds of laying eyes on me) UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE DOES NOT REDUCE THE STANDARD OF CARE! Terrible, terrible, terrible! I wish I would have seen these reviews before I had gone to see him. I heard of him through a coworker, but I should have done my own research. I went to him to have a lipoma removed from my back. It was only obvious to me that I had it but still I wanted it out! He said it was a simple procedure. Well, the nurse who was prepping me was completely unprofessional and clearly did not know what she was doing. While she was prepping me all she did was complain about her life and gossip about her family. Huh?? Who does that? After the procedure was done he sent me home to heal. Well, a few months later and the lipoma is not only clearly still there, but now I have a terrible scar on my back. Do not come here! read more

Dr. Matt and his entire practice is designed to be all about collecting fees rather than care for the patient. Even with the best insurance, the practice will insure that the fees due will be in excess to the insurance payout. That leaves rapidly accruing debt for the patient and bills that arrive almost daily for additional payment. If these bills are not satisfied quickly, the Doctor sella off the debt to any number of collection agencies. Those agencies in turn harass the patient and directly damage their credit. This is not about payment for services. It is about maximizing fees due to the Doctor. This practice is all about collecting dollars rather than providing cost effective medical treatment and legitimate health care for the patient. read more

One of the worst doctors I've ever been to. Misdiagnosed a basic skin ailment for months and just kept prescribing unnecessary topical creams and performing biopsies. He was arrogant and unpleasant. OK. I'm reading a lot of crappy reviews. Let me just say that I have been to Dr. Matt a number of times to monitor my moles and he has been nothing but professional. I have also taken my elementary school daughter to see Dr. Matt for wart removal. He did for her in 15 minutes and a nominal fee what another dermatologist charged me _$20,000_ to do for the same issue. (Still trying to resolve that bill.) Great dermatologist, horrible admin/billing department. Dr Matt told me his office would be able to provide me with the cost of a service. I called to ask once and no one got back to me. I called to follow up and they told me they'd get back to me. Their answer was "you've reached your deductible so your co-insurance is 30%." This is obviously not something I didn't already know. I asked "how much is the actual service." I was connected with billing. Billing said "we can't tell you until the doctor bills the insurance. I said "ok, what is the doctor going to bill the insurance." They responded "he has to tell you that, there's no way we can predict." To which I just couldn't help myself and I asked if he could contact me. And then billing said to me, "I have never dealt with anyone so difficult in my life." #1. Rude. #2. Creepy! I went to have a spot removed. He didn't do it right. Froze the wrong place! Then sends me promotions for botox and fillers for MANY years after. I call every time I get a piece of mail explaining I don't want trees cut down for his promotions and to stop. Could not diagnose a skin problem, but was quick to point out general skin problems (i.e clogged pores. Thanks? Not what I'm here for). He made me feel like I had to beg him to do tests when his answer "maybe it could be the air? your skin is dry.." was not satisfactory. "MAYBE IT COULD BE THE AIR" ? Seriously? Overall awkward and unpleasant person who also manages to be condescending. He said he looked at some scrape samples under a microscope but I doubt it. He would have had a better answer besides some random guesses of Eczema or fungal. Those are not even related. He obviously didn't know what was wrong. Oh, he did give me lotion samples. Some of them I returned to him and pointed out that they have PARABENS in them and I'd rather not put that on my skin. He didn't seem to understand that it's a problematic ingredient in skincare. Perhaps he does better with those looking for general prescriptions or injections. read more

Bottom line: Very average. Good if you know exactly what perscriptions you want, but not if you need any sort of diagnostic over view. I went to Dr. Matt for an acne consultation. The consultation lasted around 5 min. He asked me very few questions and took out his perscription pad. He proceded to write me a perscription for the topical medication I was currently using - not helpful. I expect more of a holistic overview from a doctor with conversations regarding solutions. read more

What a quack. I went in there to get a tiny spot removed on my hand (very minor, very vain). I had another dermatologist do this about 10 years ago and it took him 2min (after general mole check). This appointment took 45min, and I had to have a follow up (???). Normally, the spot should just go away (it kinda did, but not really) and that's that. Instead I (stupidly) went in for a followup a week later and this is what he did: looked at it....rubbed it....and asked me, "did we talk about your face acne last time? let's get you started on acne treatment." Note: I don't have acne and never have. is he thinking because I wanted such a little procedure that Im someone who has body issues and can be convinced that my entire face needs work? He gave me some free creams and said, "your face will break out for a month, but then it'll look better. let's start checkups every two weeks." so...after a month, my face will look as good as it does now?? I was billed for months afterward...that 5min "follow up" to look at my hand and tell me I have acne (that i don't have) cost me $100 even after my great insurance. i never went back and months later they're still emailing me. read more

Nice enough, but he struggled to even see the issue I was talking about, which was perfectly clear. He poked and prodded at what seemed like the absolutely wrong place never sure if he actually "got it". It definitely didn't inspire confidence. He was never able to properly diagnose the issue, and his exploratory solution seemed like a really bad idea, so I'll be going to someone else. He was also 45 minutes late to my appointment and didn't bother to apologize or explain why. read more

Two stars because he's prescription happy and will write you one for anything you want (Acutane? Retin A? You name it) But this place is super unprofessional and disorganized. What I liked about them is that they had Saturday appointments so I didn't have to miss work, but I swear, the doctor was wearing the same thing every time I went in, which makes me wonder about his hygiene. They told me that these chemical peels would be covered by my insurance, but it turns out that only the first one is, so I walked away with a huge bill. The parking lot is tiny and hard to navigate and I actually crashed into a parking pole and caused over a thousand dollars of damage to my car. I've never done anything like that in 14 years of driving. I agree with other posters who say the doctor is creepy. I wonder if he even really has a degree. The last time I went there, I had a Saturday appointment and showed up and the office was CLOSED. No one had called to cancel or reschedule. I was so annoyed that I never went back.. and no one ever followed up with me again. read more

This is the worst doctor I have ever been to. I got a rash on my arms from a trip to Thailand and went to see him about it. He told me I had some terrible disease (unrelated to my trip) which basically has no cure and told me the rash may or may not go away. He gave me NOTHING for it. I went to another doctor the next day and she said its probably an allergic reaction, she gave me some prescription cortizone, and it went away within a few days. Now, a year and a half later, his office just sent me a bill for $360 for his "services". Don't ever go to this doctor.. he will misdiagnose you and then charge you ridiculous amounts of money for it. read more

I've been going to Dr. Matt for over 8 yrs. and I can tell you he is a great doctor. The staff is extremely friendly and they've always managed to squeeze me in for an appointment. Professional and always smiling, Dr. Matt has helped me with all my skin conditions and even worked with me when I was without insurance. That's hard to come by. He booked appointments too close together to rack up charges (the medication he prescribed doesn't kick in for 12-16 weeks, yet he had me coming back every 3 weeks, which I found out from the next dermatologist I went to who actually seemed competent and professional). He pressured me to get a chemical peel even though I made it clear I didn't want one. And also for another silly and small procedure I did not want. A subsequent dermatologist (I found after so hating my experience here) told me that Dr. Matt had me on the wrong formulation and dose of one of the medications he gave me. Conveniently located in downtown Santa Monica, at the corner of 10th and Broadway, in the Kaiser Permanent building, his suite can be found right across from the elevator. A cheerful office awaits you, featuring soft lights, upbeat music and picturesque city views from every window. He and his staff are welcoming, kind and efficient, explaining everything thoroughly and patiently. I was seen on time, and Dr. Matt not only took care of my needs that same day, without requiring an additional appointment, he was also very affordable. While suggesting possible future treatments, he was in no way pushy. He seemed to care about my well being, and find delight in my happiness. I highly recommend him !! read more

Dr. Matt took me on very short notice for an ailment that was mistreated by another doctor for almost a year and had gotten pretty bad. After only a few minutes, he prescribed a "magic potion" that allowed me to start the healing process immediately. He was open to trying alternative creams for the same issue if this one wasn't quite "it", slightly burned, etc. Dr. Matt begins conservatively during the discovery process in order to "ratchet things up" if necessary.
