After one MOHS sample on my neck, Dr. Bennett gave me two options to patch the area, 1) A small singe the size on an pencil eraser top, or 2) they would open the area up slightly more in order to leave an almost undetectable scar the size of a small wrinkle. I chose option #2. Couple week later, the area didn't heal well and they had to give me a cortisone shot in my neck to bring down the swelling. Long story short, I ended up with a big divot on my neck after being assured the cosmetic repair, option #2, which costs more money, would be routine and would leave an almost undetectable scar. It did not.
I spoke with his office staff many times about this and told them I refuse to pay part of the bill which was the extra charge for the wrinkle rather than the singe mark. Actually, I not only think I shouldn't pay for the extra service that didn't go according to what I was told, but they should owe me money for giving me a sizable scar after telling me option #2 would be less noticeable than the singe repair mark. I know that won't happen... just venting.
Dr Bennett's wife, Dr Shim, a usually nice lady, whom I've also seen in the past, indicated to me through office staff, she wanted to discuss things but when I called her twice now, she never called me back. After a couple years of not hearing from them and assuming after I spoke to their billing department, they dropped the extra charges. Well, they just sent me to collections. Their extra fees for services are unreasonable considering option #1, the singe mark was already included. Paying extra for what I was told was routine and easy. Option #2, and have it turn out poorly just doesn't seem right. To be clear, I think the MOHS went well, it was the cosmetic repair option that cost extra didn't go well.
To me, if you pay extra for a small cosmetic repair that is supposed to be routine and easy and it doesn't go well, I think the patient should be given a break and at least not charged extra for it. That is my point.
I was fairly angry at first because of the certainty of the easy repair I was told it would be. Because I didn't hear from them for so long, I thought the case was dropped and they just called it a draw.
I'm upset this didn't go well and I'm upset these doctors, otherwise very nice, are insisting on being paid at this point.
I am told, they plan on taking me to court.

Update: On 12/7/2016 I called Dr Shim (Dr Bennett's wife) to try to resolve our dispute. To say the least, she was unhappy with me and she treated me with disrespect. I was polite but factual and she actually tried to make fun of me twice, 1) She mockingly said words to the effect, "I'm sorry we don't accept your insurance and you had to pay," as if it was a surprise to me and I am cheap. I knew my insurance, Unitedhealth (very good insurance), was not accepted by Dr Bennett when I set the appointment and I decided to go to him regardless. 2) She also indicated their (big) business is better than my (small) business... Yep.
Dr Shim told me to call her husband to talk things over. So I did.
On 12/8/2016 I left a message for Dr Bennett as advised by his wife and he has not returned my call yet as of 1/2/2017.
Bottom line, I went to the famous Dr Bennett for MOHS. To my surprise, a trainee did all the work. I only saw Dr Bennett for maybe 60 seconds. After the MOHS sample, Dr Bennett came in and suggested I get the extra cosmetic repair, the line rather than the singe. He sold it as being an easy and routine thing with no worries. The trainee doctor did all the work again. While doing it, the trainee doctor acted and moved in a bit of a panic. Maybe something went wrong... The cosmetic "routine" repair should not have left me with suture marks on my neck. The money in dispute is for the EXTRA cost of the "cosmetic repair" that went wrong. I paid the other fees. read more
