This funeral home is nice but very simple as far as decoration. It seems like they got stuck in a time warp from the 70's. With its paneled walls and carpeting. Although still a bit dark for my taste. They do have lamps all around, but I think that makes it seem older. Most of the wakes I have come to here are from the neighborhood. Older Polish families, but with the influx of Latinos, times are a changing. I like the fact that although parking lot is small, its still can hold at least 30 cars which of course is not bad. The service was simple, they put snacks in the kitchen (which also is a bit on the older side), and well what else can I say. Would I have my own family for a service here? Ehhh, probably not, but it is simple and I am sure inexpensive. I asked my friend (yes we have a pretty good relationship that I can ask), if her family spent a lot here. She stated the reason they had it at this particular home is because their prices are compatible. But there you go.

We were very close to him and this was very emotional and difficult to do. We had never had to plan services and didn't know where to begin. We visited a few other locations in the area and were greeted in a very "business" manner. Although we were trying to fulfill our uncles wishes by planning ahead, some of the nearby funeral homes refused to discuss options in detail or show us caskets because he had not passed away yet. Despite my sister having legal documents to prove she was his power of attorney, one gentleman in particular told us that one of my uncles siblings had to be present to make arrangements as that was his next of kin. We left the location feeling very disrespected and disappointed. Im glad we left because upon entering Modell we were greeted by Mari. Our experience from that moment on was one we will never forget. She was very helpful, compassionate and patient. She took her time to show us around, answered our questions and never once did she question our intentions. She allowed us to pick out every detail without asking us for a dime. We then met Gloria and we felt right at home. My uncle ended up passing away later that week and we were glad were able to plan ahead. I can't imagine making arrangements during those difficult times. All in all I have much respect for this place and all of its staff. My uncles services were perfect and Gloria did such an amazing job with his makeup. Modell is family owned and we were treated like family from the moment we walked in, to when they picked up his body at the hospital, to the moment he was laid to rest. Im thankful for their team and I highly recommend their services.

However it was a bit of a challenge being disabled. The doors were heavy making it hard to hold them and push my walker through A button for automatic opening would have been helpful. This place is beautiful and calm. The director, Jonathan is just the most sweetest, most helpful, patient and understanding man. I know it's his job but he really took the time to go through everything with us and made sure to make our arrangements perfect. We definitely felt more than just his clients and through these difficult times he made everything so smooth and easy. I cannot emphasize how detailed and perfect everything was. We had so many beautiful compliments from everyone who attended and our hearts were full with content despite the tragic loss we were feeling. I would say the only negatives were on the actual night of the wake he was not there but had a friend be there. She didn't seem to know what she was doing. The mic didn't work and she didn't know how to fix it. Also, she started cleaning like an hour and a half before our end time. I have a large Hispanic family and they brought lots of food so I guess I can understand why she started thinking we wouldn't end on time. But I told her my family would clean. She did apologize and stop but it irritated me at the moment. And the last annoying thing was ordering the death certificate afterwards. Erika made a mistake and ordered the wrong one so we had to wait another week. I would definitely say that the pros outweighed the cons. Highly recommend this place.

Yari the funeral director not only took advantage of a grieving mother. But she was beyond unprofessional and inhumane with my situation. Don't let her politeness fool you. She actually should not be able to be in business anymore. But I have to share my painful experience in hope that it will help someone else. She was late for the private personal viewing and she did not have my sons body ready to view. After the service she kept giving me different excuses as to why it was taking so long for my sons body to be cremated. But I had used her before so I trusted her and didn't pay any mind to the delay. Once again I just lost my son and it was just hard to make sense of everything. 3 weeks later go by and the funeral home she rents for viewings in the north side contacts me. She rents another funeral home which is the option I went with. Funeral home #2 contacts me to tell me they have the cremation paperwork. I didn't know that was the delay, because Yari once again wasn't being honest with me. Well now the question was where is my sons body. Yari didn't properly store my sons body for over 3 weeks. Imagine how horrific just the thought of that is. I had to have another funeral home go pick him up and get him cremated. The 2nd funeral home was heaven sent. They helped me through everything and my son was cremated within a day. On top of that she asked to borrow money from me 2x. She called it a business opportunity. The first request was $30k and the second was $1k. I declined, but who has the nerve to ask a grieving family for money. Let alone when she had my son sitting around God knows where in her funeral home. Her license has not been renewed and ahe should not be in business. She should not be able to hurt anyone else this way.

The review is for the service itself, not what my family experienced in making the arrangements. But if full disclosure, they had no complaints. Gatling has two floor and what looks like a basement as well. You can walk up stairs to the rooms on the second floor, but there are also elevators for those that need it. The room itself was well maintained and the sound system was good. The service itself was very well organized. It started on time and the pastor conducting the service kept everything on time and moving as intended. I was most impressed that they respectfully told the crowd that only certain representatives of my cousin's family and friends would be allowed to speak; everyone else could share their stories at the repass. I loved this. While everyone in each group got to go up on the stage, one person spoke for them. My first cousin (the husband) did not go up, but that was cool as it was his choice to let his kids have their say. The entire experience was handled very professionally. I was impressed at level of professionalism of the staff. Everyone was courtesy in greeting me, directing me to the location where the service was being held. The parking staff was also nice, directing me to a space that would allow me to leave early as I had another memorial event to attend later that day. They still have the screen outside for drive by visits, but it was not on that day. Yes the decor is dated but it was clean. I loved that the staff were all in they same uniforms for the most part. There were 1-2 gentlemen who were in suits, but the maroon colors were a nice touch. All in all, for a sad event, this was handled in a well organized manner. You tend not to want to think about future plans, but this would be a place on my list. Professional, organized and on point with the time management.

When we arrived, the first "sorry for your loss" came with no eye contact and sounded like a bored,…read morerehearsed script -- and that set the tone for everything that followed. It became clear very quickly that this funeral home is focused on money and volume, not compassion or care. Our service was rushed from start to finish. We were repeatedly interrupted with unrelated parking announcements. In the middle of my mother's honoring song -- a moment that mattered deeply to us -- the staff told us to turn the volume down so they could make yet another announcement. Although we arrived on time, they still cut our service short just to move on to the next one. Her slideshow wasn't even properly set up. Only one screen was turned on, leaving half the room unable to see her photos and memories. That level of carelessness during a final tribute is unacceptable. There were no tissues for mourners, no direction or support from staff, and no sense of leadership to help guide us through such an important moment. The entire experience felt cold, rushed, and transactional. To make things worse, they removed one of her songs from the obituary without explanation or permission. That was a personal detail we carefully chose to honor her life -- and they simply erased it. For a service that cost nearly $10,000, we expected respect, professionalism, and a facility that reflects dignity. Instead, the aesthetics are dated, uninviting, and in need of serious investment. The staff appears untrained, overwhelmed, and more focused on packing in back-to-back services than honoring the people entrusted to them. My family has used this funeral home for years, but after this experience, that ends with me. My mother deserved better, and families deserve to know what they're walking into. I hope people start paying attention and choose a place that truly cares instead of one that treats grief like a business transaction.

I was in town to help a family member complete the arrangements for her mother's funeral. Staff was told multiple times that we had not planned a funeral sevice before. But, from the 1st meeting that I attended I got an uneasy feeling about the level of service she'd receive. There is no continuity of care with staff. Too many different people to deal with when you're grief stricken. This resulted in fractured or downright miscommunication. Timelines were unclear adding to stress. Questions we had were often meant with blank stares. I could write a book about everything that went wrong or was mishandled but don'thave that kind of time. Suffice it to say, this business needs to level up their front-office professionalism and processes. They need to understand that families are grieving and at their weakest point. And, just because someone has attended funerals that doesn't mean they know the ins and outs of planning. This is THEIR business. It should run like a well-oiled machine. Now for the positive. Although the obituary needed a lot of re-work over 2 days the printer (who we had to insist on speaking wirh directly) was easy to work with and went above and beyond to get it right once she understood what was needed. She is the reason I'm adding a star. Otherwise it would be 1 star.

I spent days working with the printer to get the obituary the way we wanted it. We missed the first hour to see my mom dealing with the printer. They were unorganized and we spent all of our time trying to get things done rather than grieving for my mom. I would not recommend Calahan Fineral Home. I am still devastated at what we went through dealing with them.
