I had the misfortune of attending the service for my first cousin's wife, who passed away too young at the age of 68. The review is for the service itself, not what my family experienced in making the arrangements. But if full disclosure, they had no complaints. Gatling has two floor and what looks like a basement as well. You can walk up stairs to the rooms on the second floor, but there are also elevators for those that need it. The room itself was well maintained and the sound system was good. The service itself was very well organized. It started on time and the pastor conducting the service kept everything on time and moving as intended. I was most impressed that they respectfully told the crowd that only certain representatives of my cousin's family and friends would be allowed to speak; everyone else could share their stories at the repass. I loved this. While everyone in each group got to go up on the stage, one person spoke for them. My first cousin (the husband) did not go up, but that was cool as it was his choice to let his kids have their say. The entire experience was handled very professionally. I was impressed at level of professionalism of the staff. Everyone was courtesy in greeting me, directing me to the location where the service was being held. The parking staff was also nice, directing me to a space that would allow me to leave early as I had another memorial event to attend later that day. They still have the screen outside for drive by visits, but it was not on that day. Yes the decor is dated but it was clean. I loved that the staff were all in they same uniforms for the most part. There were 1-2 gentlemen who were in suits, but the maroon colors were a nice touch. All in all, for a sad event, this was handled in a well organized manner. You tend not to want to think about future plans, but this would be a place on my list. Professional, organized and on point with the time management. read more

When we arrived, the first "sorry for your loss" came with no eye contact and sounded like a bored, rehearsed script -- and that set the tone for everything that followed. It became clear very quickly that this funeral home is focused on money and volume, not compassion or care. Our service was rushed from start to finish. We were repeatedly interrupted with unrelated parking announcements. In the middle of my mother's honoring song -- a moment that mattered deeply to us -- the staff told us to turn the volume down so they could make yet another announcement. Although we arrived on time, they still cut our service short just to move on to the next one. Her slideshow wasn't even properly set up. Only one screen was turned on, leaving half the room unable to see her photos and memories. That level of carelessness during a final tribute is unacceptable. There were no tissues for mourners, no direction or support from staff, and no sense of leadership to help guide us through such an important moment. The entire experience felt cold, rushed, and transactional. To make things worse, they removed one of her songs from the obituary without explanation or permission. That was a personal detail we carefully chose to honor her life -- and they simply erased it. For a service that cost nearly $10,000, we expected respect, professionalism, and a facility that reflects dignity. Instead, the aesthetics are dated, uninviting, and in need of serious investment. The staff appears untrained, overwhelmed, and more focused on packing in back-to-back services than honoring the people entrusted to them. My family has used this funeral home for years, but after this experience, that ends with me. My mother deserved better, and families deserve to know what they're walking into. Brother passed on 4/14/2026 as of 5/5/2026 body still not cremated due to NO contact or asking Family about doctor's signature & was told a few times waiting on State. My thing is reaching out to the family & keeping them informed of the status of our love ones. Don't just keep us waiting & wondering. In cases as ours I feel like some monetary compensation should be deducted from the arrangements but we all know that's too much like right. We support Gatlings because of neighborhood affiliation. But A R Leaks & Sons will get my business from thus day forward & praying non @ all needed. Had my aunts funeral there and they were so unorganize walk in and it look chaotic made you feel like the deal with bodies in massive numbers. Look as if they hired ppl from their local probation office the guy working the lot told me and my family to go to the cemetery b4 for they brought my aunt out to the Hearst I thought when they say funeral persuasion it means for the family to fellow the dearly departed NOPE not them find your way to the cemetery and good luck!!! The preacher look like he wae dug out a rent a preacher. Their limos look like something out of a junk yard praying it didn't break down in route. Our experience with Gatlings was very disappointing. Miss Ashley was extremely rude and disrespectful and her energy towards the family was aggressive and unkind. This made a difficult time even harder for our family. If you're looking for compassionate and professional service, I would not recommend this place. If I could give this company more stars, I would! First, I want to say, Ms. Parks, made the process easy! She kept us laughing from crying. She understood her job very well. Not only that, but she ensured that all my grandma's wishes were fulfilled. Ms. Parks took her time and was very observant of details. My mother and I love her. The organist and minister did not miss. Every vocal Note was on point and every word preached was FELT. Although, I didn't get everyone's name, the rest of the staff that assisted with our service was very nice and supportive to my family. I recently attended service Friday and Saturday April 11th & April 12th. My deceased cousin's body was prepared well no complaints. The day of the actual service some of the female staff acted very mean, and very short with the public. Its not what you say it's how you say it. The male staff were very polite and seemed caring. They made extra effort to assist the family, even though there were 4 services going on at the same time. The female staff, not all of them just the lady with the white hair and other lady with the smashed down hair were mean. The lady with the braids and the lady with the curly hair were pleasant when providing the family/visitors with directions and instruction. Our family rented the banquet hall and we were informed after being in the hall after the service for about 30 minutes that we had another 45 minutes and we had to be out the room. The mean lady and lady with the smashed hair came to get themselves a plate of food, I couldn't believe it such nerve. Again body preparation was fine; the chapel was the appropriate size, and ample parking considering the number of services. Would suggest staff being offered a breaks between services so they can remain accommodating to public/family. Remember these families are dealing with difficult times. read more

I am so unsatisfied with my services at this chapel. No words can express the amount of disappointment I had with the whole service. First off, Shay in Obituary Planning, was very abrasive and rude. She wouldn't even let me get a word out before she was interrupting me. During the wake, we had to practically beg them to bring flowers that my family paid for. We also paid hourly for the flowers and they said they do no refunds whatsoever but I feel we should've been entitled to a discount because we paid for flowers to be there at a certain time and they were two hours late. It was ridiculous. Next, the funeral itself was overall okay but some things can't be overlooked. First off, They turned the TV off instead of muting it. So, I couldn't connect my phone to play the music I'd picked out for my father's funeral. They approached me like I did something wrong, and I explained I can't do anything because the TV was shut off. Second off, they let two funerals out at the same time which lead to a lot of confusion with leaving to head to the burial. Honestly, I'll give one star because some of the staff were very nice but they will never bury another family member of mine. read more

The staff was rude to the family on the day of the public viewing 2/2/24, informing her oldest son that he can't view the body until her husband arrives, but it was the other brother her son not her Husband, who passed 3 years ago. On the day of service 2/3/24 starting at 9am the staff was rude again, the family arrived, her son, sister, grandchildren and a host of other family members was told they have to wait in the lobby until the other son arrives who set up the arrangements and did not let the family members in until his brother called him. It is hard enough laying your loved one to rest without adding any additional stress to the family! Lastly the Son put in a request to have a special song played through Bluetooth while they were viewing the body for the final time, but the song was never played! This is the third time using Gatlings for my grandmother's funeral this past summer. They were professional and accommodating. My only thing they can do without is the drive up viewing makes you feel like ordering a Big Mac instead you're looking at the deceased inside one of the parlors. Other than that it's one several black-owned funeral homes in Chicago. They do however need to do two things one is their overflow lots need to be paved and second employees need to wear name tags so you know who you're talking to. read more

They switched the casket at the last minute. Said he was too big. Which was not true. (I work at a funeral home). When I questioned them about it they went and got a tape measurer and measured the casket in front of the family during the wake. I asked them if they notified the cemetery with the measurements for the larger casket. They said no. I asked why?? They didnt have a reason. So I had my aunt to call. As we are lining up for thw procession we are told that the cemetery cant do it today because the groundkeepers had left and there was no way the new casket would fit in the space they had prepared. Fast forward.... My aunt went before the rest of us had to pay double and we would be allowed to bury him today. We arrived a t the cemetery they would only allow 8 cars in . We had about 20. And finally when they lowered the casket into the vault. It was FILLED with water to the top of the vault lid. Just a day of if it could go wrong. It did. Complete mismangement and carelessness on the part of the funeral home. And my dad is really good friends with the owner. I have tried not to write a review but this place has worked my last nerve. A return phone call I'm still waiting on from February 2022, it's March 23,2022. My mom had an insurance policy & money she had left for the month when she passed in February 2022. I didn't want to sign anything but my sister & brother did the signing of the paper work. No siblings paid for the funeral, it was all my mother's money. So maybe since I didn't sign any paperwork they just ignored me. My sister would not complain. From the time they received my mother's body, no one notified the family. I had to call to ask if they even had the body,"Oh yes we have the body" My mother had two bags sent to funeral home from the hospital, which they noted but one was never found. They changed the casket & didn't tell us . We found out during the service. A crystal I ordered, the wording was incorrect but since Ms Shay wrote it down wrong they would not change it. Plus some info was missing from the crystal, so they only added the dates & now I'm still waiting on the base for the crystal. My mom's funeral was on February 26th, there are still unresolved issues. I only gave 2 stars because of the way my mom looked, which was nice & the convenience of the location & banquet room being available. And the caterer that has her cards there Ms Meeks, thumbs down as well. read more

Gatlings need to make some upgrades. The carpet needs to be renewed. The casket room needs to have more of a variety of caskets. The casket book that they show to families is falling apart. We definitely mentioned these things as they make too much damn money to not have the best of the best during this time for families. Shay that handles the obituaries need to be fired. We felt rushed. They left off 50 of the 150 obituaries we ordered. The company they use told me that they never received an official order from Gatlings and therefore just made 100 as a courtesy. I was told I would have to wait until the Monday after the service to receive them. Management at Gatlings quickly handled this problem and the remaining obituaries were delivered that same day to the repast. I appreciated management stepping up and making this happen. I was told my mom looked beautiful and like she was sleeping. I expected this from Gatlings as we have used them previously, and they tend to do a great job. I chose not to have that visual of my mom. I seen her when she first transitioned as her caregiver, but the embalming process, caskets, and all that does not sit well in my spirit. My family saw her and confirmed that she looked great before the burial and therefore Gatlings gets three stars, but the Halsted location needs many upgrades. We went to Chicago for my daughter's grandfather's funeral and services were held at Gatling's. Upon entering, I felt very uncomfortable and no one really even greeted us. Finally, a crabby woman asked if she could help us and we sat down. I didn't want to sit down because I thought the dated waiting room might suck me into a time capsule and put me back to 1971. The carpeting and chairs were so filthy looking and aged, I honestly have never seen anything that dated or old. The entire place needs a super good cleaning and I didn't even ask where the bathrooms were but I do know the vending machines are in the basement because Ci went to get me something to drink. We had to ask Miss Crabby and then she had someone escort her down there. Upon her return, she hands me the Snapple and Miss Crabby tells me " You have to drink that outside".....Really???? It was actually raining outside....I gave her a dirty glare and stashed it in my purse. Ummmm...WHY didn't you tell us we could not drink in your 1970's decorated waiting room BEFORE Ci went down to get the drink? Anyhoo, the service was nice but you bring in your own clergy and speakers. It seems to be well organized and the people in the service seemed empathetic and caring enough. I do have to say, also, that the maroon leisure suits from 1974 also need to be updated sometime in the near future. Most of them were sagging on the staff and just looked tacky. I am sure this Chapel well serves the needs of the community but I most definitely would not want my service held here. read more

This place is a well-oiled funeral machine! I don't know exactly how many were going on at the same time but it looked like they had the capacity for several at once. Everything was smooth from the parking in the large adjacent lots to finding the room in the far corner of the huge complex...once you push through the massive crowds outside. Not the most splendorous decor, but everyone was friendly. A little research shows that this is the only funeral parlor with a DRIVE IN VISITATION--that's right, if you don't have time and energy to park your car, walk 200 feet, and sit in a chair, you can use the drive-up loop to call up the images of your enbalmed loved one in a casket on a TV screen and sign the drive-up register. Out of respect for the business, I will withhold any bad jokes. If I could put zero stars I would! I was quoted one price over the phone but a higher price when I went on for my scheduled appointment. The floors carpet was dirty and ripped. My loved one makeup made her look like playdo. I asked for them to redo the makeup and Mrs. Gatling herself was verbally aggressive telling me how it wouldn't make a difference or how it could possibly look worse. I asked for a comb and some scissors so I can try to make my loved one look better and they brought me a comb that was filthy. They had no compassion at all! One of the workers excuse of no compassion was that she has been in this line of business for years. I was supposed to get a credit since they over priced me for the transport services. I had to call them about it since they didn't give it to me and they said they need to look further into it. When they were the ones who told me I was going to get a credit. During the funeral I asked if we could project a picture from our phone so everyone could see it and they told me it would cost an additional hundred something dollars and they didn't know how to do it and the girl who they normally have do it might or might not be at work or even there in time to help us during the funeral time. Absolute worse ever! I would not recommend at all! I feel horrible know after trying my absolute best to try to make everything perfect for my loved one to find out this place made it less than even remotely nice. Do not use this place! I have previously worked for a funeral home and the first lesson I learned was that you are servicing a family at one of the hardest moments of their life --be as respectful and empathic as you possibly can. After all of these years of business, a lesson for which they are vastly unaware. My great aunt's funeral was this past Saturday and the funeral home provided the wrong link for the virtual service. When they were contacted by folks who could not access the service the staff was so out of line. Some relatives missed most of the funeral and others missed the service completely because of their error and all they could say was this is a free service *insert shoulder shrug* They took no ownership of their error and had no regard for our families grief. Disgusting! I would NEVER use their services again and will do ALL I can to share my awful experience with other families to prevent their grief from being ignored. Loss in itself (especially in the time of COVID) is hard enough than to have that exacerbated by a funeral home's unprofessionalism, greed, and incompetence. I attended services on June 9 and 10th, 2015. This place was HORRIBLE! I recommend you think twice before using this service. The lack of professionalism, and ignorance runs high. Meeting the needs of the grieving family was not met, asking for the simple thing such as a kneeler, box of Kleenex. I have never been to a funeral home were there was no Kleenex out. Where is the empathy for the grieving? While the clergy was reading scriptures, a staff member decided to interrupt him to make a speech about giving a Bible to a family member, he then asked who should he give it to. The man (not gentleman), lacked common courtesy for the clergy. The staff member rudely interrupted again telling the clergy that he was going to close the casket. I wanted to stand and ask him if he normally interrupts clergy, while reading the gospel? The mission states they care, but what do they actually care about is dollar signs! Upon departing we were told to go to our vehicles and a staff member would direct us, we were waiting in the heat with no directions and no staff outside. The first few times I went in to make arrangements was OK. They offer a free ride to the cemetery to make arrangements but the vans they use are barely running a few times the van wouldn't even crank up. The drivers were nice though. come Friday the day of the viewing and the day everyone was to sign off on insurance papers. they had us waiting an hour, then told us we couldn't view the body til we signed the paper work, but let us view the body anyway because they were so busy running around taking care of other stuff. then they had us waiting while we viewed the body for another person to come where they took us to the back area in a very small room where all we had to do was sign a single piece of paper. Then the day of the funeral the limo arrives and as we're heading there the guy takes a weird route we could have gotten on the e-way and been there in ten minutes this guy takes a route that takes 30 minutes then stops a few blocks from the funeral home gets out makes a phone call and starts talking to his friend (another driver) which makes us late. Then tells us he had to get clearance, but that doesn't mean he had to get out and talk to his friend. On top of that they wear white on Saturday and this man's suit was filthy, I mean like black spots/stains on the suit jacket. The one thing I can say I was satisfied with was that they had my grandmother looking very beautiful, but the downfall on that is that they cut her hair without consulting with me. read more

As a native to Chicago's south side where Gatling's has been a landmark in our community, I was very disappointed in the services offered by Gatling's for my grandmother's funeral. From start to finish. This place received specific instructions regarding my grandmother's care and then allowed 1 of 6 siblings to overturn everyone's wishes based on a personal relationship/ previous referrals from the 1 sibling who tends to ruin everything in the family. Mr. Gatling himself told my aunts and uncles that he would not move forward with anything until all six of them came into the office and came to terms - I didn't know he was paid for family counseling, but I can say that my family wouldn't have come together in one session even if he were. Hence the reason that he was given instructions before taking custody of the body. He allowed this busy-body to upgrade the casket to one that was waaaay too expensive and make other costly adjustments to the funeral arrangements that were already agreed upon. During the actual funeral, he closed my grandmother's casket WHILE WE WERE STILL VIEWING THE BODY so that they could continue with the services - not that it would put his parlor behind schedule if they didn't because the services were held at my grandmother's church. There was no service scheduled after the funeral so what gives? That was the last time some of us were able to see my loved one because of our flights out of town. This last part is just a speculation, but I'm pretty sure, based again on his personal relationship with my aunt, that he provided her a copy of the death certificate before anyone else, which allowed her to close several bank accounts and make off with the funds. Again - great job Mr. Gatling. I usually try to endorse any black-owned business, but in this case I say Mr. Gatling needs to learn to respect the line between business and personal. There was no need to override what 5 wanted for the sake of 1. Simple math. I'll be sure to recount this story to anyone I know of who asks my opinion of your services or requests a referral to a funeral home. This review isn't for the services at the funeral home, but the way they conduct the after services when people are trying to get to the cemetery, or wherever they may be going afterwards. I have on two separate occasions within a two week period been held up by the processional because they are blocking traffic and the turning lanes trying to get onto the expressway. They direct the cars to start driving when all of the vehicles aren't even ready thus blocking traffic, and not even caring about it. They in turn cause other vehicles to block traffic because we are trying to get over but cannot, so they are causing two sometime three lanes to be blocked on the street, all while people are trying to get to work. I understand that you all are grieving the loss of a loved one, but consideration still needs to be had for the other drivers that are occupying the roads the same time as them. The traffic directors and funeral attendees need to be aware that they are not the only people on the road trying to get someplace, and that my time is just as valuable as theirs. read more

I read previous comments but still choose to use Gatlings. Initially staff is extremely helpful and welcoming. Once you pay I find its a different story. Director told me to call if I had questions never spoke to her again after we purchased and left office. Tried several attempts to get in touch with someone. Staff who actually provided services OUTSTANDING. Facility staff pass you off for all other inquiries say they will call you back but never do. Say something will arrive like "death certificate" but it never do. Bottom line - father passed away May 12, and still June 13th and no death certificate. Gatling keep saying its mailed, its being worked on - where is the compassion for the family stuck with mounds of bills because they can't close the estate. I would think twice before recommending this place that brags on performing 2000 funerals a year. WHERE IS MY father's DEath certificate. read more

They listened to my family's wishes and made the entire experience bearable. This Funeral Home is HORRIBLE! My uncle past away a couple of weeks ago. He was a former Serviceman to his country. He spent over 12 years in the US Navy. The VA took care of most of the Financials for the Service, however there was not enough money for flowers. Gatling's Chapel charged my family $100.00 to rent a artificial bouquet that sat on top of the Casket for 1 hour and 30 mins. You would think that since my Uncle was a former Serviceman,and that my family chose Gatling's for our Bereavement care would have allowed the artificial bouquet to sit on top of the Casket without my family being charged. My Uncle didn't look clean. He looked like a homeless man whom they through a Suit on and placed in a Casket. They didn't even give my Uncle a Haircut. I remember back in 94 when I family chose Gatling's for my Grandfather's funeral. They did a horrible job back then as well. People, spare yourselves the pain. By pass this funeral home.
