Have been here twice now and am absolutely hooked. First time was for a friend's birthday doing the holiday ornaments class with (I think) Josh and he was great handling myself and a couple others as beginners and also folks who had a little more experience. Paced the class well and generally just well done. Second time I went with my wife and our ten year old daughter to do the flowers with Xander. Another great experience with different techniques and again well done with just enough help mixed with freedom to work. We are already looking for more family blacksmithing classes to do. As a note, when I went in December it was a perfect temperature inside with the heat as it was cold outside. In April... even on a cooler day it was very hot inside (which is not a surprise given the heat of the fires) so make sure to dress safely but appropriately. They do have water cups and a refill station for bottles as well as ice for when you are too warm and need to cool off. If you are looking for a night out that is way different than a typical Friday evening you must take a class here. My sister and I came for a knife class and it was awesome. It's could be a little overwhelming at first but everything was explained so well and the entire project was broken down into easily achievable steps. And if you get stuck the instructor is right there to help you. Our instructor was Kyle. He was not overbearing or boring at all! His enthusiasm and encouragement went a long way towards making us feel comfortable. Plus he offered some expert help to make our knives go from butter basic to pointy kitchen. Some need to know info - everything is provided (protective eye wear, aprons, gloves and I did see ear plugs). They have cups and a water fountain but I would probably bring my own water bottle. There are breaks. There are bathrooms that are clean. It is very loud. It is hot. It is hard work and you will most likely be sore the next day. It could be addictive. read more

My friends I did a chopstick making forge class or session yesterday! Xander was our teacher who was so helpful and patient- turns out I am terrible at forging (was my first time) - if there is a way to give more praise or sign up specifically for his classes I would! - I thought the blacksmithing was hard and on a hot summer day the heat is just too uncomfortable - I don't know if spring and fall or winter are better times to do it- the place is huge, plenty of parking - they are really good at teaching safety rules and everyone was courteous - it was also really neat to have a nice usable product at the end of 3 hours -all in a really good experience to try something new!! read more

He paid attention to each participant's progress so that each of us would leave with a well-made knife. I talked my family into going to Lawless Forge after seeing a Facebook ad. It turns out if you have five or more people a private experience is the same cost (or less) than a public class- so we got a private class for the six of us! We decided to make horseshoe knives and our instructor was Zander. We had a very mixed group- one of us is a carpenter and one is afraid of fire- but none of us thought we would be making a knife like the example knife. We were wrong! Under Zander's excellent guidance, the project was broken down into easily attainable steps. He gave us great instructions and then walked around to provide tips and advice. He also had a great sense of humor! We also all felt very safe, which is really important when working with hot metal and metal grinders! Zander gave us great safety instructions and took it very seriously. He was also willing to jump in and help if anyone was uncomfortable or having trouble with a step. In the end, we all made beautiful and unique knives while having a lot of fun! I would advise others to wear the right clothes. The Lawless Forge website tells you what to wear for safety, but remember it will be really hot! Keep an open mind and be willing to learn! read more

This was my first foray into metal forging; I had no idea what to expect. First; Lawless Forge is an amazing facility. It was thoughtfully built and definitely had the safety of its guests in mind. I didn't even know this place existed until I saw a Groupon for it! Inspired by forged in fire on Netflix, I thought this would be a great fun experience for my husband whose an avid watcher of the show. It was challenging! We had a great time at Lawless Forge making knives from horse shoes! Our class had about ten to twelve folks in it with ages ranging from, I'd say about 8 years old to 55. Admittedly, I was a bit intimidated by the forge but quickly got used to working around the heat and melting our horse shoes. The practice required more arm strength than I was anticipating so it was extremely rewarding to see our finished project. I'd definitely go back to practice my blacksmithing skills! read more

Amazing fun experience. We were with Kyle, he explained and demonstrated perfectly, it was funny, and a good way to connect with other people. It was absurdly fun to forge my own knife and be there with a friend from work. I'm planning on scheduling a whole work event for my whole team. I'm also going to bring my mom, sister, and wife here. I learned alot of technique and it was really interesting to watch the knife take shape. Next time, I'll go for a curved blade. A buddy of mine had a bachelor party in Los Angeles and though I couldn't make it, I saw through the group text that they went to a forge and had a blast making knives. This sounded like an amazing experience and I had to believe there were local forges in the NoVA area. Some quick Googling brought me to Lawless Forge and I'm so happy we took their horseshoe knife class! Make sure you arrive at least a few minutes early because the safety talk starts right away and though the process is simple, there's a couple of important points to understand. After the safety talk, Kyle turned on the forge and it was game on! He had a storyboard (step-by-step sequence of what we were doing) and he that used to guide us through each step of the knife-making process. Instructions were simple, guidance was ample, and between the fun music and humor every attendee was in a great mood. One of my buddies who attended the LA class suggested that I have some sort of vision of what I wanted to produce before forging. I decided that the best knife I could produce would be a letter opener since I'd wanted something unique for years. Perfectionist by nature, I often wanted to continue hammering away at my horseshoe with the intention knocking out all imperfections. I asked Kyle for assistance with shaping the letter opener and his guidance was invaluable in shaping the metal. But limited time forced me to continue down the storyboarding process and Kyle's reassurances that we would have time to improve aesthetics at the end of the process kept me motivated. As promised, the knife began to materialize and I saw vast improvements near the end of the storyboarding. As a result, I'm extremely happy of what I produced. My wife made a wicked blade and our buddy made a very cool tanto blade. I recommend asking about the leather sheaths before leaving. They're only $20 and they are a perfect place to store your new blade. I definitely hope to be back for Lawless Forge's open shop! read more
