I was so excited to try Lava Island for the first time and we came for a birthday party. The space is huge with tons of space for kids to play on which is good since it's packed full of children. The party room was nice and the staff checked in frequently. However, the play area itself had little staff to be found. I'm big on safety and I had a hard time finding anyone who was monitoring equipment. I am also big on cleanliness and I only saw one girl wiping anything down and I had a hard time finding hand sanitizer after my daughter was done playing. I finally found a bottle by the cubbies way at the front but there really should be stations nearby when the kids are all touching everything. I had heard a lot of talk about the pricing structure prior to attending and I can see what this issue is with charging parents. Very few parents were actually on the equipment, most were watching their kids like myself. Still charging each parent $11 makes a family outing for 4 people nearly $70 when only two kids are playing. That's pretty unaffordable when you're considering indoor play options on a day off. It's definitely a premium play area, but other businesses utilize observer wristbands to designate adults there to supervise not play.

We got invited to a birthday party at Lava Island and I gotta say... go early. There is SO much for the kids to do, they stayed busy the whole time. They even have a separate area for the babies, which I really appreciated. I also loved that they have cubbies for shoes and coats -- super convenient. The themed birthday rooms were really nice and the black lights were a hit I didn't try any of the food, but they do have a limited menu. Overall, the kids had a great time and I'd definitely go again.

Because my Instagram algorithm feed me a bunch of parenting activities, Lava Island popped up as I was doom scrolling. I've been to handful of indoor playground in St. Louis, which are really good to have in the backpocket when the kids need to get their energy out (which for my youngest seems to be everyday). Lava Island opened up a week or so ago, and it looked promising, but you can never tell until you actually visit. The kids and I decided to venture to the new indoor playground to check it out. We went on a Saturday right when it opened at 9am. Because bullet points are easier to read here's my bulleted list. Things I liked: - Free Wifi for when you need to let the kids run free and you need to work - 6 individual family bathrooms - Shoes off right after you check in, that means the dining area, play area, and bathrooms are socks only - This place is huge. Probably the largest indoor playground in St. Louis - Huge trampoline area with lots of foam pit areas to tire the kids and adults out - Place is so big, when it still doesn't feel like it's that busy - Food area with typical kid items kids like (French fries, pizza, etc.), there's coffee too for adults - The place is super clean, but maybe that's because it's new, hopefully it'll stay clean - Multiple party rooms for birthday parties - Separate younger kids playground area - If you buy an all day pass, you can come back again any time in the day as long as you keep your wristband on - There's an option for 1 hour passes, which is nice for families with younger kiddos Things I wish were different - Everyone that enters has to pay, even adults that aren't playing. - I wish we could bring outside food, but this isn't allowed due to health codes, which is understandable My kids and I really enjoyed our time at Lava Island, definitely a place to check out if you have kids!

Only a small part of lava island ! There is more all the way around ! Highly recommend!

My daughter and I came here for a birthday and let me just say lava Island is amazing. There is multiple things to do for all different age groups. Even adult adults can have fun.! We were helped out by Jordan Taylor and he was very kind and answered all my questions and assisted with anything we needed help with!! I highly recommend lava Island for birthday parties or just fun family days and nights out! Lava Island for the win !

It can be used for a music venue (my daughters have had recitals here) as well as great cocktail parties (I have so far hosted a jewelry party, reunion event, and a number of other cocktail parties here). The owners are amazingly helpful (a family) and flexible. The sound system, chairs and tables, and even linens are in great shape, and there is even a kitchenette towards the back. There is an outside area that can often be used that also enhances the space. Easy parking - a gem in the Webster Groves area!

You can comfortably seat 24 with space to mingle indoors and 24 (six tables of 4) outdoors. The garden patio is lovely and it was nice that it was covered and offered ceiling fans to keep the humid August air moving. I was disappointed in the lack of communication from Neil. I sent emails, but he never responded. I called a week later and someone told me he was out of town. He should get an auto-response for his emails if he plans on leaving town. He also said he would have the space set up (tables and chairs arranged) the night before my event, but when I arrived that day he was still in the process of setting up. That took time away from decorating the room and setting up the food buffet. Be aware the table linens they offer are the size of table toppers and only hang down about 3 inches, so plan on ordering your own table clothes. Overall the space is nice and the price is reasonable, but the coordinator is not very organized.

Overall the experience we had with hosting our wedding reception at the Upstairs was quite good…read more I had been to a fantastic Yelp event at the Cheshire, where we got to tour and taste our way through all of the fantastic spots on the Cheshire property. I already knew the Upstairs was a gorgeous space with warm textured wooded walls and beautiful imported lighting fixtures. When we began the process of planning for our wedding reception, we were already staying at the Cheshire (taking a Brit to the British hotel when he's in town visiting is the way to make him feel at home, right?), already, so we decided to see if we could see the space as a possibility for our celebration. We had a few other ideas of locations, but we loved the Cheshire. It felt so right to us. The room is split into two distinct spaces. I requested that all of the guest tables (we had 60 guests) remain on the side of the room with the wood paneling, light fixtures and windows. The dance floor and DJ were set-up on the other side. The space would absolutely accommodate more guests, but it didn't seem ridiculous to have so few. They let us use their mirrored chargers and votives for the tables, and we brought in vases of flowers with our own table numbers on them. Originally, we were set to have our happy hour in the fireplace room, which is still on the second floor, but outside of the ballroom. When Lucy abruptly left, she was replaced by Karina, who very kindle advised us that the Red Room downstairs was not being used on the night of our event, so we had our cocktail hour and hors dourves downstairs. It was perfect because this meant we could easily stand near the door to greet the guests as they arrived, and then when it was time to go upstairs, it was a whole new venue. This allowed us to have our evening bar, place card table, gift table and even a selfie photo booth in the fireplace room. It was perfect. We set-up our cake on a table on the dance floor, which if I had to do it again, would have in the fireplace room or closer to the entry somehow, as many of our guests reportedly never say the cake prior to us going to cut it... and it was a gorgeous cake and deserved to be seen. I didn't enjoy the experience of working with Lucy, as I felt like she wasn't very friendly and didn't make us feel important at all. Working with Karina was much nicer. Because we live in London, and were finalising details from home, she went out of her way to set-up a Skype call to introduce herself and go over things. I have very few complaints about our event, but I had been told that the tables would be set the morning of the event or the day prior. To me, "set" meant that there would be linens, plates, glasses, and silverware on the tables. Chris and I picked up our cake and delivered it to the ballroom ourselves at 1:30pm. Nothing was set at all. The tables were in the room, but there weren't linens or anything else. I have to admit that I started to panic a teensy bit. We were told that we could come in at 3:00pm to set the centerpieces and our other pieces. We all had planned to do this and then go get ready at the hotel. Apparently the wrong colour linens had been delivered and were moments from arrival. I was assured that by 3:00pm, this would be rectified. We arrived to set everything up, and still nothing had been done. They said that no one would be there until 4:00pm to set-up. They asked what I wanted to happen, and I said that I needed the tablecloths to be on the table so we could get the center pieces arranged. They did that, and we set-up the cake table, selfie booth and the place card table in the meantime. They offered to let us leave the flowers and things for them to arrange, but of course I wanted us to do it. The second thing that bothered me was regarding the cake. When it was taken away and cut, they brought out random slices and strew them over the tables. I had anticipated that they would put them out so people could take a piece if they wished. This meant a lot of cake was wasted with people not eating it, or not being able to choose what was given to them. We had been looking forward to the strawberry cake for months. We were so busy that we left our plates on the table to join our friends. We had every intention of coming back to them. Our plates were cleared after I'd had two bites and Chris hadn't had even a taste. They also took the Champagne he'd been saving. In my opinion, we should have been asked if it was okay to do this. We did get the leftover cake sent home with us, but there wasn't any strawberry. I'm still sad about this weeks later. My third and final complaint is that all of the place cards were taken and disposed of. I had every intention of keeping ours for a scrapbook. At the end of the day, I would highly recommend this venue. Our guests were pleased with the staff, everyone was blown away by the food, the venue was beautiful and unique and it was an overall good experience.

And most importantly, so were our guests. We just had our wedding reception at Rose of the Hill on June 23, 2018, and could NOT be happier with our choice! First of all, Quentin Dunk is amazing to work with. He's extremely helpful throughout the entire planning process, but the best part is how great he is on the actually day of your wedding. Quentin checked in with my husband and I SO many times to make sure we were getting everything we needed, he took care of our family and friends incredibly, and if there was a job to be done, Quentin jumped right in there to do it. THE FOOD. Oh my goodness.... DE-LICIOUS. We decided to do a Family Style dinner and it was an absolute hit. Everyone commented on how quickly the food came out and how nice it was to be able to sit down while still getting to pick and choose what they wanted on their plate. And everyone said that the Penne with creamy tomato sausage and sage was their favorite =) We would have our reception there all over again. DEFINITELY recommend.

The place is small, but plenty big enough for the 50 people she had at her shower. Also, it was homey and comfortable and quiet. The building is historic and they left the entire thing open for us to explore during the shower. Also, we had full use of the kitchen, so bringing in our own food was easy peasy. We had sandwiches and T Ravs and 3 kinds of gooey butter cake, all made by local places or by the friends and family of the bride, and they did not care. We did not have to use their caterer or anything like that. It was a huge money saver and guaranteed that we had what we wanted. Also, they don't care if you bring alcohol. (bonus for a shower with beer I must add). I will say parking was a bit of a nightmare, but nothing unmanageable. I would suggest telling people to carpool if you are looking at more than 20 cars, the place just can't hold it. So in short, this place is great for a lot of things, and even has those big white tents that you can rent for an indoor/outdoor event. It's the home of the St. Louis Ambassadors, so whatever date you are looking for you can't overlap their dates, but they still have plenty of open dates. Great place for a shower, or even a small wedding. It will keep things classy while keeping your price tag down.

The two men's room toilets had no door and no walls, respectively. One lady's room stall had a view into the kitchen. Most glaring, the in-house DJ was awful. Right after the first dance, he decided, without permission or even awareness from the newlyweds, to play some sort of elaborate military tribute. It colored the whole rest of the night, and not in a positive way. During the night, he just looked so upset to be there. At the end of the night, he chimed in to warn drivers away from a certain neighborhood in the area, claiming it was the "Ferguson of South County", a pretty clearly racist statement.
