In the summer, the sculptures can get hot so be careful. The highway is just below the park so it is extremely noisy. This is also close to the street so it is not the safest place, so visitors must take extreme caution. Dogs are allowed on leash and picnic blankets are allowed. Next door is a small semi enclosed playground with slides and swings. It is not as accessible for those in wheelchairs. There is a restroom and plenty of portable toilets. It's also across the highway from the Zoo and free to park on the street if you do both attractions.

It means they have areas where they can get away from visitors and have some privacy, and I really appreciate that. The staff were wonderful too. Everyone I interacted with was friendly, helpful, and clearly cared about both the animals and the guests. My favorite exhibit was easily the penguins. You get incredibly close to them, and it's such a fun experience watching them waddle around, dive into the water, and zip past underwater like little torpedoes. I could have stood there for ages just watching them. The polar bears were another highlight. Seeing such massive animals swimming and roaming around up close is always impressive, and they had plenty of room to explore. There are so many different animals here that it's easy to spend most of the day wandering from exhibit to exhibit. It never felt rushed, and there was always something new around the corner. Overall, this is a fantastic zoo. Whether you're visiting St. Louis, looking for a family outing, or just want to spend a relaxing afternoon, it's an easy recommendation. Water stations are available and you are allowed to bring in your own food and drinks. Plenty of available restrooms and rest/seating areas all around the zoo. I adore this place. They have hundreds of artists create pieces live in front of you throughout the event and then they auction off the pieces to fund the studio. I was immediately intrigued and addicted. We have been every year since. Since that first event, St. Louis City Open Studios and Gallery has become one of my top "kid friendly" places in this city. They offer fun and educational art-centered classes for kids as well as open studio hours six days a week. Your "little" can learn how to throw some clay onto a wheel, string their own necklace, or illustrate their own book. My personal favorite is the kid and me class on Saturday afternoons. For one hundred bucks you get six weeks of uninterrupted quality family time with all of the art supplies as well as an art instructor provided. Who knows...you may have given birth to the next Picasso and never have known it with all that time they spend on the Wii. Also, it's very open and I can see all parts of the park so even thought it's not fenced, it just feels safe. The kids love that part of it is a tree that you climb inside. Bathrooms are close so great for potty training toddlers who have to go RIGHT NOW. There are 4 picnic tables in the pavilion, 2 drinking fountains and some sunshades with benches. We had our kids' birthday party there and it went extremely well. Super affordable to rent! The only downside is one parking lot is a flat trek to the playground but a longer one and the other parking lot is fairly close but you have to walk down a big hill and so then also back up. So anyone who is more limited with ambulation or someone who fatigues very quickly may not find this playground particularly accessible. Otherwise it is a super fun and simple playground!
