We were lucky enough to meet the co-owner and winemaker, Paul, who was super sweet and engaging. I got to ask a few questions related to harvest and he was happy to talk about it and also share some history with their previous beautiful dogs that were part of their family before their passing. Wine: My wife and I shared 2 tastings and we stuck with the reds only. Their Petite Syrah was smooth and delicious, the Cabernet Sauvignon was bold and beautiful. Their Pinot Noir was surprisingly packed full of pepper that took you by surprise as Pinots are typically not like this. Our favorite was their Old Vine Zinfandel. From start to finish this wine was just what we were looking for. Full bodied, tannins were well balance, fruit forward with a punch and that flavor lingered. No wonder they have won awards for these wines!! Ambiance: You couldn't ask much more of a picturesque view from Lava Cap. Whether you are inside at the tasting room huddled around the wood burning stove keeping cozy or outside on their two leveled decks or picnic tables or tables for two, it sets you up for a beautiful view of the vineyards and rolling hills. Perfect setting for a peaceful evening with a bottle and your love by your side. Staff: Both Kristin(our pourer) and Kevin(owner/winemaker) were very friendly, outgoing and treated you like family as you walked in. They knew their history of the vineyard and its root of its name( you should ask them). Could have talked with them all day. Oh, ask Kevin about his lizard fascination :) Extras: As we pulled in the parking lot, there were a handful of kids playing on their scooters around cars and we had to stop ours before the spot we parked in to allow the kids to move. After we went to taste, one of the kids hit the car with a scooter. One of the staff went out there to let the kids know to be careful around cars. She didn't tell the kids to stop playing but just to be careful(later come to find out it was their parents car) the kids didn't stop so the owner went and spoke with their parents who were at a distance to where they couldn't see their kids. After the owner got back the kids parents came up and sternly said to cancel their order (12 bottles of wine) because they didn't feel it necessary to be talked to about their kids. So the parents left along with the kids. Both the staff and owner at Lava Cap handled the situation perfectly. We would definitely recommend Lava Cap for their wines, their picturesque views and their extremely friendly staff!! read more

I fell in love with Lava Cap back in 2004, I love the warm welcome when you walk in the tasting room. I've been taking either my daughter or my kid sister down with every quarter for tastings and to have a picnic out on their beautiful deck that over looks the vines. The resident Cat Jake or to some Mr. Kitty is another warm and friendly welcome. The wines are beautifully crafted and there a taste for every pallet. My favorite at this moment is the Rose or the cab franc. A must visit if your in the apple hill area. read more

Lava Cap Winery is by far one of the most visually spectacular wineries in the county! A visit here for the view and a glass of wine is one of my favorite ways to spend a Sunday. The sparkling passion fruit and lighter wines had great aroma and freshness; the reds and blends were rich without being heavy. We left with some bottles. Do the vineyard tour to the top of the mountain if it's available. You get a ride from the lower vineyard through the forest and past the ponds up to the upper vineyard at about 2,400 feet. The views at the top are worth the time. Tasting fee is reasonable and waived with a bottle or better yet, become a member and get access to the special events and the vineyard tour. Reserve the tour and weekend tapas if you can. We'll be back soon!

THE SETUP Now located in Placerville, CA - a mere eight (8) miles from its old location in Camino - but now much closer to the business center of the thriving metropolis of Placerville - Crystal Basin Cellars has amped up their profile and marketing efforts to grow their business. Having been a fan of Crystal Basin Cellars for the better part of a decade now, I've thoroughly enjoyed taking my treks up here to The Apple Hill region of the foothills to take in the bounty of Crytal Basin that it wonderfully shares through it's vineyards, barrel rooms and wine bars. RELATED ENDEAVOR In addition to the winery itself, it should be pointed out that Crystal Basin Cellars has a "Crystal Basin Station" - it's stand-alone Wine Bar - located in the Historic Folsom Street district. MY WINE PICKUPS Owner Mike Owens signed me up to his White Wine Redneck Club last time I was up visiting him and the Crystal gang at their old Camino facility: I get three (3) wine pickups a year with 3 different varieties of white wine (my choice) for only about $60 each pickup (3 bottles, not bad!), all excellent wines. The last few times, it was far easier to get my pickup from their Folsom location when I was doing other stuff in Old Historic Folsom. However, this time, I wanted to visit this NEW location. It was a lot of fun to get the tour of the new winery facility with KZ, try some new wines (such as Renegade White), and do my Tri-Annual Wine Pick-up! EXTRA EXTRA!
