From the outside, it doesn't look like much, if I'm being honest. But once you go inside, that's actually quite a bit to see and shop for. They've got works from local artists to some bigger name brand foods. They also have locally roasted coffee beans from Asheville. The owner is very friendly and very helpful. Their dirty chai is delicious. Good amount of spice which pairs well with the good coffee they have. If you're driving through, stop by. So as a "new, yet old" local [family has been in this area since 1790s] in this sleepy little part of the Western North Carolina mountains, I was happy to have a nice friendly little store that is along way both into Marshall or Hot Springs....depending upon which way you are going *grin*. Friendly folks....great coffee and even a few chairs to "chew the fat" with folks behind the counter as well as eye some of those yummy pastiers. I've been here a few times and always enjoy the "hello" as I come in as well as handed the entire container of half and half to pour as much as I want *grin*. I'm a fly fisherman as well, so an extra treat is the selection of flies to fish the stream that runs along right beside the store. A diamond in the rough of the Appalachian mountains you should patronize should you be in "my neck of the woods". read more

Ugh. Double Ugh Ugh. I hate being the only bad experience somewhere, but being a major contributor to reviews worldwide (have traveled 55 countries & all states but Alaska), I have to say something about a bad experience that would be a first. First of all, lets discuss the 2 stars...the positive... it's an incredible breath of fresh air to be driving in remote areas and stumble into a coffee/expresso shop in seemingly the middle of nowhere, filled with cool local gifts. Being right up against the beautiful Laurel River at that! With that out of the way, my wife and I were returning to our home state via Highway 25, and knew of this coffee shop. I wouldn't think of not stopping. However, the coffee seemed watered down, so after one sip and several dollars later, I went back and mentioned it. The young lady didn't seem particularly concerned and simply stated "no one else has complained". I already noted she seemed to lack a kindness towards others in the store, although I certainly wouldn't categorize it as rude, simply being task oriented. I asked for another cup of coffee and stated I would pay for it. Incredibly, she accepted my offer, even though I handed back to her a completely full cup of bad coffee! "If you want to pay for another cup that's up to you". And so I did. Yes, I offered. But as I got down the road and after pouring out the second cup of coffee and getting a third one at a service station in Hot Springs, I thought about my experience and am not sure I've ever had someone not gladly try to make something right, especially on something as small as a cup of coffee. Anyway, Laurel River Store put a "bad taste" in my mouth this otherwise fantastic day. I hope the young lady was not part of the "family" side of this business. If so, then a beautiful setting will eventually be found out by others to have a bit of a quality issue. One final note: I've stopped here before in years past, and did not have a similar issue. I'd say give it a try. We all have a bad hair day from time to time! :) read more
