Magpie's (or more colloquially known in Valdez as Maggie's) has been my go to for the Summer. The…read morelovely and gracious host of Magpie's is an instigator of fun & a facilitator for creativity.  Magpie's offers an excellent daytime café. I've visited regularly this summer for a midday treat of scrumptious seasonal scones and a beverage; lavender and ginger, blueberry and lemon, pumpkin - just to name a few. Yum - love them!  Your host is also the producer of the Friday and Saturday evening "End of the Road" follies. The show is hilarious and has something for everybody. I've seen it three times this season. The triple threat actors, singers & dancers are all so talented and go out of their way to surprise and delight. At the end of each show, my face hurts from smiling and laughing.  I recently brought my family to see the follies when they were in town & it was a hit! Even with my 11-year-old niece, who later kept singing "Chugach Dan." She was fascinated to learn about the gold rush, salmon migration and the story of Keystone Canyon. We enjoyed delicious sandwiches and charcuterie. Definitely a must if you have guests visiting!  She also offers a gathering place for community members and visitors of all ages. There is a variety of options to uplift your week. I have attended almost every Thursday for trivia, multiple Friday night music acts and as many open mics on Saturday as I possibly can! Each event has such a supportive crowd because of the community that Maggie has created.  It is astounding the level of talent that graces the stage. They've done a spectacular job curating a season of diverse music acts and performers. The long Summer nights were meant for staying up to enjoy music under the midnight sun. I'd say, savor it while you can because Winter is coming. Some tips -  In the early season, be sure to apply mosquito repellent before you arrive. Maggie has invested in good lanterns but suggest an extra defense.  Dress in layers - The old-town style Valdez performance tent is a stylish indoor/outdoor structure. Come dressed for weather changes. You might want to dance in the rain.  Or when the sun comes out, sit at the fun barrel tables and soak up the rays.   There simply isn't anything else like it in Alaska - Enjoy!

And, I believe it's the only gas station in Valdez. Joe's is conveniently open 24 hours and I stopped here each morning at 7am to grab a breakfast sandwich and hot chocolate. They have a terrific homemade popcorn machine that was perfect for a midday snack. Plus, I purchased all my little Valdez knickknack souvenirs like magnets, keychains and postcards inside. They offer public showers, restrooms and laundry machines for all the outdoor adventurers and campers. Joe's is situated right next door to a Safeway grocery market. So, if by chance I couldn't find anything I was looking for here, I just walked around the bend to Safeway. When gas prices were soaring throughout the USA for this past summer of 2022, Joe's was surprisingly reasonably priced at $4.50 a gallon. Other amenities at Joe's include... - Firewood - Diesel and Propane - Auto and RV supplies - Car Wash - automatic and oversize - Snacks, candy and soft drinks - Soft Serve Ice Cream and slushies - ATM machine - Ice machine It's not often you think of gas stations as being One-Stop-Shops for all your comforting necessities, but when you explore small towns around America, they can become reliable places that make your time and travels a whole lot easier. That's what I think you'll find here at Captain Joe's in Valdez, Alaska.
