Beautiful local stickers

I know there is a labor shortage everywhere right now, and particularly in small-town Alaska but...dang. What happened here took it to a whole new level! First the positive: the paninis here are incredible. I don't consider myself a sandwich guy, much less a panini person, and these were very, very good. Also, the local art/good/stickers here are the best in town. If you want to bring a non-junky keepsake home from Cordova, this is the place! The negative: it took almost an hour and a half to get. There was only one person working the entire place when we went (7/2), and I know that is very difficult to manage. Still, you really need to set expectations and tell your customers it's going to be a long wait before they order. I also ordered an Americano and it too, took almost an hour and a half. And it was lukewarm when I finally got it? There were about 4-5 orders ahead of us, also waiting a very long period of time. There was an anxious funk in the entire place, you could almost hear everyone thinking "heh, heh,...any....any second now my coffee should be up..." Even with one person running the show, the pacing of the sandwich making was still very glacial and deliberate. There was absolutely no hustle or sense of urgency. Something really needs to be done to better manage this place when it's short staffed. Maybe that means only coffee? Maybe that means only sandwiches when there are two people working? I don't know. But I just feel like this setup does way more harm than it's worth to keep open in a state like this.

Iced americano with caramel and cream, savory breakfast pastry with bacon.

Really enjoyed the coffee and chai! Didn't see a full menu but had a little savory breakfast pastry and those were pretty good.

Great paninis and very nice quinoa salad - with a mix of garbanzos , bell peppers and herbs. Clam chowder soup was more bacon than seafood. Very helpful host , perfect for lunch

Eggs Benedict. My cousin loves it.

Magpies On The Fly - Fresh pumpkin scone and Prosecco

Magpies On The Fly

Magpie's (or more colloquially known in Valdez as Maggie's) has been my go to for the Summer. The…read morelovely and gracious host of Magpie's is an instigator of fun & a facilitator for creativity.  Magpie's offers an excellent daytime café. I've visited regularly this summer for a midday treat of scrumptious seasonal scones and a beverage; lavender and ginger, blueberry and lemon, pumpkin - just to name a few. Yum - love them!  Your host is also the producer of the Friday and Saturday evening "End of the Road" follies. The show is hilarious and has something for everybody. I've seen it three times this season. The triple threat actors, singers & dancers are all so talented and go out of their way to surprise and delight. At the end of each show, my face hurts from smiling and laughing.  I recently brought my family to see the follies when they were in town & it was a hit! Even with my 11-year-old niece, who later kept singing "Chugach Dan." She was fascinated to learn about the gold rush, salmon migration and the story of Keystone Canyon. We enjoyed delicious sandwiches and charcuterie. Definitely a must if you have guests visiting!  She also offers a gathering place for community members and visitors of all ages. There is a variety of options to uplift your week. I have attended almost every Thursday for trivia, multiple Friday night music acts and as many open mics on Saturday as I possibly can! Each event has such a supportive crowd because of the community that Maggie has created.  It is astounding the level of talent that graces the stage. They've done a spectacular job curating a season of diverse music acts and performers. The long Summer nights were meant for staying up to enjoy music under the midnight sun. I'd say, savor it while you can because Winter is coming. Some tips -  In the early season, be sure to apply mosquito repellent before you arrive. Maggie has invested in good lanterns but suggest an extra defense.  Dress in layers - The old-town style Valdez performance tent is a stylish indoor/outdoor structure. Come dressed for weather changes. You might want to dance in the rain.  Or when the sun comes out, sit at the fun barrel tables and soak up the rays.   There simply isn't anything else like it in Alaska - Enjoy!
